TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Joint Technical Commission of Tehran and Baku reviewed the two countries’ cooperation in the field of electricity in a virtual meeting.

The two sides discussed the construction of ‘Khoda-Afarin’ and ‘Qiz-Qala’si dams by the two countries on Aras River, reported Fars News Agency.

The budget for the dams and equipment was also reviewed.

The agreement on the construction of Khoda-Afarin and Qiz-Qala’si dams and power plants was signed by Azerbaijan and Iran in Tehran in 2016 and approved by the two countries’ parliaments.

In late December, 2019, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said his country has already established transmission lines with Russia and Iran, adding that Baku is eyeing for further trilateral energy cooperation in an upcoming meeting of the energy ministers of the three countries.

In an interview with Russia-24 TV Network on December 30, 2019, Aliyev said that the Azerbaijan-Russia-Iran electricity corridor has vast potentials for energy cooperation among the three neighbors.

“Azerbaijan and Russia cooperate in emergency electric power supply… and we constructed new electricity transmission lines with Iran,” he noted, adding, “Therefore, the electricity power energy is active among Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.”

Aliyev added that the countries’ energy ministers will discuss collaboration in the field, highlighting that Baku is currently exporting electricity to Georgia, Turkey and the European states.

Azerbaijan has also established a new line for transferring electricity with Iran. Therefore, the electricity corridor is currently in operation among Iran, Russia and Turkey, he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s newly-appointed Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said on Thursday that boosting economic ties between Tehran and Baku is a high priority for Iran.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Governor-General of East Azarbaijan Province Mohammadreza Pour-Mohammadi, reported Mehr News Agency.

Mousavi said the neighboring states will have an important role to play in the future of Tehran’s political and diplomatic relations with other countries due to the cruel sanctions imposed against Iran.

Border provinces of Iran have a vital role to this end, he said, adding that East Azarbaijan is of great importance as the province enjoys the appropriate commercial, economic and industrial infrastructures.

Mousavi outlined the development of cultural, academic, and scientific relations as other priorities of Iran’s diplomacy with Azerbaijan, noting that the exchange of students and holding joint conferences can be effective in the expansion of bilateral relations.

In a telephone conversation in late June, Iran’s Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Farhad Dejpasand and Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev explored ways for the expansion of bilateral economic relations between the two countries amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Dejpasand, who is also the Iranian chairman of the joint cooperation committee of the two counties, said, “I hope that with the help of bilateral cooperation, we will be able to witness the expansion and strengthening of economic relations between Iran and Azerbaijan.”

The minister also expressed hope that through observing anti-coronavirus health protocols the two sides can hold the 14th meeting of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Committee in the near future.

He also referred to the building of a joint industrial park near the border of the two countries and joint projects of International North-South Transit Corridor, which is a 7,200-km-long multimode network of ship, rail, and road routes for moving freight between India, Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia, and Europe.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi from Iran and Azerbaijan Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov stressed the need for the two countries to continue and enhance their cooperation in all areas.

The two diplomats held a phone conversation on Wednesday.

In the phone talk, Araqchi referred to certain reports published on the web and social media, and said, “Enemies which are against reciprocal ties between the two countries are seeking to strain relations between the two sides by publishing false reports.”

“The news claiming Iranian trucks have been moving toward mountainous Karabakh and the occupied territories of the Azerbaijan Republic are utterly false,” he said, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website.

“While respecting the territorial integrity of the Azerbaijan Republic, Iran is fundamentally opposed to any move that would fuel conflict between the two neighboring countries of the Azerbaijan Republic and Armenia,” he added.

He further thanked the Azerbaijan Republic for sending humanitarian aid to Iran and cooperation to help the country fight the coronavirus.

Araqchi described as important the issue of transportation of goods between the two countries while observing health protocols.

He also referred to the quarantine condition and closure of universities and called on the Azeri government to cooperate in returning university students and other Iranian nationals to the country. The idea was welcomed by the Azeri side.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi on Wednesday discussed issues of mutual interest with Deputy Defense Minister of Azerbaijan Major General Fouad Mohammadov.

During the meeting, Khanzadi said that Islamic Republic of Iran has joint cooperation councils with most of the countries and the number of commissions with the neighboring states as well as those outside the region is increasing, IRNA reported.

The more the communications, diplomatic shuttles and commissions hold successfully, the more both the region and the world will be more secure, he said.

Noting that face-to-face dialogues, especially between neighboring states, are very significant, he said, “Such interactions will help us know each other better and understand common interests and undivided interests and have more collective security.”

The geopolitical zone of North of the Islamic Republic of Iran, where the Caspian Sea is located, is the most important component for the proximity and interaction of neighboring naval forces, he said, adding that many talks have so far been held on the Caspian Sea between the governments and naval forces of five countries and good agreements have been made.

Contending that the Caspian Sea needs security, Khanzadi said that the security should be ensured collectively and naval forces of the five littoral states hold talks in a safe and secure ambiance.

Iran and Azerbaijan Republic navy forces boast of good capacities for cooperation, he said, noting that they can exchange students and run courses in Persian, Azeri and English languages.

Fouad Mohammadov, for his part, said that there are many areas of cooperation between the two countries’ naval forces.

He also invited Khanzadi to visit his country to help promote interaction between the two forces.
