Australia frees Iranian student Reza Dehbashi Kivi, 39. He had long been fighting to avoid extradition to the US, after American authorities accused him of exporting military equipment for detecting stealth planes or missiles to Iran.

Dehbashi has been liberated after being held in Australia for 13 months and has now returned to Iran, Iran News quotes the story reported by Fars News Agency on Saturday.

Lawyers for the US government had applied for the Iranian PhD student’s extradition for allegedly conspiring to export “defense articles designated under the US munitions list” for the Islamic Republic, according to ABC News.

An exhibition of photos and documents on the diplomatic relations between Iran and Australia opened at the Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) in Tehran on Sunday.

Australian Ambassador Ian Biggs, IAF director Majid Rajabi-Memar and foreign diplomats attended the opening ceremony of the exhibit, which has been organized to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Mahmud Farazandeh, the director general for East Asia and the Pacific at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also attending the ceremony, said that Iran and Australia have long had good relations and that Australia was the first country that supported the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

“I am so thrilled to see the photos. They are historical documents, and I hope the good relations of the two countries develop further in the coming years,” he added.

Organized by the Embassy of Australia in conjunction with the Institute for Political and International Studies of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the exhibit will run until October 9.

The Forum is also scheduled to host a five day festival of films from Australia by screening a lineup of six movies beginning October 5.

The lineup includes Warwick Thornton’s drama “Sweet Country”, Gregory Erdstein’s comic movie “That’s Not Me”, Cecil B. DeMille’s action drama “Samson and Delilah” and Jeremy Sims’ romance “Last Cab to Darwin”.

“The Song Keepers”, a documentary by Naina Sen, will also be screened in the program. The documentary covers the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir’s tour of Germany to perform German hymns in their traditional language.

The program also is screening Australia-based Iranian filmmaker Farshid Akhlaqi’s documentary “From Music into Silence” about Australian musician Peter Roberts who changed his life to offer peace and calmness to people.
