TEHRAN (Iran News) – Seoul’s Blocking of Iran Assets Against International Trade Laws. Head of Iran-South Korea Parliamentary Friendship Group Ruhollah Motefaker Azad in meeting with South Korea’s Ambassador to Tehran Yun Kang-hyeon said that Seoul’s blocking the Islamic Republic of Iran to have access to its forex resources is against all international trade laws.

In the meeting, Motefaker Azad pointed to the historic ties between Iran and South Korea and said that Iran-South Korea Parliamentary Friendship Group has always been seeking bolstering amicable ties with Soul.

He noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been disappointed over Soul’s actions in recent years which have led to the decline in the bilateral economic ties. He then pointed to the significance of the parliamentary diplomacy as an effective tool for reinforcing the political relations, adding that ties between the two countries have been always important and the current Majlis is determined to bolster it.

Motefaker Azad then pointed to Iran’s frozen assets in South Korea and said that resolving this problem and unblocking the assets needs double efforts which should be made by South Korean government in order that the credit line with Iran would be implemented immediately.

He added that South Korea has been one of Iran’s reputable and reliable partners in recent years but recent actions especially in the past three years for blocking Iran’s forex resources have been under the pressure of the U.S. and it has changed Iranian people’s approach towards South Korea.

He then urged South Korean government to remove hurdles in way of Iran’s access to its financial resources in Korean banks.

Then Yun, for his part, called Iran as an important trade partner of his country in the region and said Iran and South Korea have had good relations and interactions for over 60 years.

He reiterated that recent tension in ties between Tehran and Seoul is the U.S. sanctions and expressed hope this problem would be resolved soon.

He termed positive the outlook of relations between the two states and said parliaments of the two countries can pursue the previous paths of cooperation with strength.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson denounced South Korea’s “blind” obedience to the US, saying Seoul has no right to freeze Iranian assets.

Asked by reporters at a press conference on Monday about Iran’s legal action to free billions of dollars of its assets frozen in banks of South Korea due to the US sanctions, Seyed Abbas Mousavi said, “Our action is not anything new, as we have been pursuing the money South Korea owes us for a long time.

“South Korea has subjected more than half a century of relations with us to interference from others. South Korea’s blind obedience to the US and its move to use the unilateral US pressures as an excuse (for blocking Iran’s assets) are not acceptable to us.”

It is not surprising that a number of countries are under the US pressure, the Iranian spokesman said, adding, “But they have no right to block the Iranian nation’s assets for some time.”

He went on to say that the Foreign Ministry “has taken the necessary and legal measures (to unblock the money).”

On June 12, Hossein Tanhaee, the chairman of Iran and South Korea’s joint chamber of commerce told Borna news agency that Iran’s frozen assets in South Korea were between $6.5 billion and $9 billion.

Tanhaee added that not only Korean banks refuse to release Iran’s money, some of them have also demanded commission and maintenance fees for Iran’s accounts.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The government of Iran says it will soon have parts of funds blocked abroad because of the US sanctions released and return to the country for the fight against the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Government Spokesman Ali Rabiei said on Monday that the government would soon announce some good news about releasing the blocked funds of Iran.

“There has been some positive progress in unblocking our money,” said Rabiei, adding, “There would be some good news in this regard which will be publicized after the finalization (or unblocking).”

The announcement comes more than a week after the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati said that Iran was making progress in securing new sources of funds for the national fight against the new coronavirus.

Hemmati said that coordinated efforts by the CBI and the Iranian Foreign Ministry for unblocking the funds abroad as well as for persuading the International Monetary fund (IMF) to accept Iran’s request for an emergency loan had come into fruition.

Rabiei said that Iran’s success to access new hard currency sources was a blow to the United States and its “unethical” policy of refusing to ease the sanctions even at a time of increased pressure on Iran because of a pandemic.

He also dismissed reports in some media outlets suggesting that the IMF had rejected Iran’s request for a $5-billion emergency loan under pressure from the US.

“We have yet to hear anything about rejecting the request for this loan, there has been some statements but whether the fund (IMF) has made a decision or paid any attention (to those statements), we haven’t heard anything,” said the spokesman.
