The offending “Fitness Balance app” and “Calories Tracker app” promised to calculate body mass index, monitor calorie intake, and provide other health-related services. With no advanced warning, according to Reddit posts here and here, the apps charged users fees of $99.99, $119, or 139 Euros, depending on the country of the user. Users who had a credit or debit card connected to their Apple account were immediately billed.

The scam worked by displaying a message as soon as the app was opened. It told users to scan their fingerprint to view a calorie tracker or receive another personal service. When users complied, the apps displayed a popup window that said they had been charged a fee. Less than two seconds later, the popup disappeared, but by then it was too late for many users. Anyone with a card linked to their Apple account was already charged, Ars Technica reported.

“So what it does is ask you to keep your finger at the fingerprint, and then the popup for paying for the app shows up,” a Reddit user with the handle kristikoroveshi94 reported. “Since you have already your finger there, the payment continues. And damn what a price this shitty app has. Luckily I don’t have a linked card or paying account.”

Apple removed both apps over the weekend, shortly after the Reddit posters reported them. People who had been charged reported that their requests for refunds were being processed and were expected to be completed in the next 30 days. Company representatives didn’t respond to a request for comment for this post.

The apps carried rave reviews that were most likely written by people connected to the scam. Fitness Balance app had an average rating of 4.3 stars out of a total of five possible. While Apple responded quickly and all indications are that scammed users will receive refunds, the incident is a reminder that the App Store isn’t immune to scams and malicious apps. iOS users should remember to read a wide selection of reviews before installing unfamiliar apps.

Lukas Stefanko, a researcher with antivirus provider Eset, says here that iPhone X users can protect themselves against these types of scams by making use of a feature called “Double Click to Pay,” which requires a double-click of the side button to verify a payment.

FIND MEMOJI IN THE IMESSAGE APP DRAWER AND DESIGN YOUR MINI ME

You can only access Memoji through iMessage. I wish this wasn’t the case, but it’s what we got. You’ll have to tap on the Animoji icon (the little monkey). From there, you’ll want to scroll all the way to the left and tap on “new Memoji.” This will launch the Memoji maker. The process is relatively self-explanatory. You’ll be able to choose your skin tone, which ranges from the expected to more alien choices, like blue and pink. You can adjust your hairstyle, eye color, head shape, nose, and lips. You can get more personal by picking freckles, facial hair, earrings, headwear, and glasses. I will say as a human that wears glasses, the options aren’t great. But you should be able to pick something relatively similar to what you wear now, and if not, well, hopefully Apple will give you more to choose from in a future update.

SPAM YOUR FRIENDS WITH YOUR MEMOJI

Now that you’ve made your Memoji, you can start using it to send messages. Back in the Animoji app in iMessage, you can swipe over to your Memoji and start making faces. It’ll mirror your gestures. Press the red record button once you’re ready to make some real content. You have 30 seconds to record whatever you want. You can review that footage and then send it directly in iMessage. You can still send these messages to your Android-using friends; it’ll just send as a video file. You can always save that file once you send it, so if you want to only post that video elsewhere, you should send it only to yourself and then save it.

Maybe 30 seconds isn’t long enough for you. If that’s the case, tap on the camera icon in iMessage. This will open the camera app, and from there, you can choose the camera mode you want to use. After you swipe over to video, you’ll notice a little star in the bottom left corner. Press it. This brings up a few different effect options, including Memoji. Tap on that monkey again, flip the camera to yourself, and swipe over to the Memoji you want to use. Exit out of that menu by tapping on the little “x” in the right-hand corner. Your Memoji will show up on your face (so long as you’ve flipped to your front camera) and you can start recording.

You can always layer more effects, like filters, text, and shapes. This is a lot to handle visually, but if it feels right to you, go for it. Once you’re done recording, you can press done and send that video in iMessage. You’ll have to send it to save it, which is annoying, but at least you’ll then be able to share it on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or wherever else you feel your Memoji should live.

HOW MUCH MEMOJI IS TOO MUCH MEMOJI?

As of right now, go wild with Memoji. Spam your friends. Enjoy. I do think we’ll eventually get sick of these, but I crack myself up playing with my Memoji. I hope you do, too. You’ll look like a freak making faces to your phone and / or talking to it, but it’s fine. It’s 2018, and we can’t have shame.

There’s no doubting though that these new gestures require a little time to get used to, which is why we’ve put together this handy gesture guide to navigating throughout the iOS UI on an iPhone X with no home button. Before we get to the gestures proper though, let’s quickly run over the new iPhone X definitions so we’re all on the same page when we get to the explaining (see boxout).

IPHONE X: NO HOME BUTTON? NO PROBLEM!

How to navigate Home – Ok, this is one of the easiest gestures to get comfortable with. To navigate to Home simply swipe up from the Home Indicator/bottom of the screen.

How to wake iPhone X – Let’s start with what is one of the most used functions, waking the iPhone. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, including pressing the Side button, tapping anywhere on the iPhone’s display, using the ‘Raise to Wake’ option, or opening the iPhone X Leather Folio.

How to sleep iPhone X – There’s not as many ways to sleep the iPhone X as wake it, however, you can do so by both pressing the Side button or closing the iPhone X Leather Folio.

How to close apps – And talking of the App Switcher, if you want to close any app then simply open it and then long press on any app card to show a close button. Once the close button is active you can either tap it or swipe the card up to close.

How to delete app icons – This one hasn’t changed. Simply long press on a Home screen app icon for a couple of seconds and then press on the X delete micro button.

How to jump straight to notifications – A super handy shortcut, simply swipe down from the upper left-hand corner of the iPhone X’s display.

How to get to widgets – This can be achieved in two super easy ways, the first by swiping right from the Home scree, and the second by swiping right from the Notification Center.
