TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran lambasted recent conflicting remarks by US President Donald Trump about what he has called future talks with the Islamic Republic, saying he fails to have a correct understanding of the nature of the international relations.

“Trump has notoriously alleged that he would reach a quick deal with Iran after potential reelection. More recently, though, he alleged that coming to such a post-election agreement with Tehran would be tough,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Monday, according to Press TV.

“Mr. Trump lacks all correct understanding of the nature of the international relations,” Khatibzadeh noted, “Trump should first make up his mind about whether he seeks to reach a deal with Iran in half a day or that this would essentially be a difficult task.”

Neither are Trump’s advisors blessed with a decent understanding of the things that have come to pass, Khatibzadeh added.

The spokesman was apparently referring to the fact that the US unilaterally left the negotiations table with Iran and others in 2018 after quitting a multilateral nuclear accord, reimposing the sanctions that the deal had lifted.

“There neither is, was nor will be any talks,” he said, adding that reports about either underway or potential US talks are accounts that simply serve Washington’s own domestic needs.

Khatibzadeh said it is only after Washington’s return to the nuclear deal, its removal of sanctions on Tehran, and compensation for the damage it has caused to the Iranian nation through the coercive measures that Tehran may consider the US request for negotiations.

Kuwait’s proposal

Commenting on Iran’s stance on the recent remarks by Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah about regional dialogue for the settlement of tensions, Khatibzadeh noted that Tehran embraces and welcomes the Kuwaiti premier’s proposal for regional dialogue and cooperation, according to Tasnim News Agency.

He expressed hope that Kuwait could convince the reluctant parties to engage in talks as well.

“We think we’d be able to hold inclusive dialogue as soon as possible in the Persian Gulf region among the regional countries for stability and peace in the region.”

In an address to the 75th UN General Assembly via videoconference on Friday, the Kuwaiti PM invited Iran to dialogue and cooperation with Arab countries to end regional tensions.

“Kuwait once again calls on the Islamic Republic of Iran to take serious measures to build trust in order to start talks based on respect for the sovereignty of countries and non-interference in the internal affairs of these countries,” Sabah said.

Khatibzadeh said Iran has already proposed initiatives for regional dialogue mechanisms, including the Hormuz Peace Endeavour (HOPE) put forward by President Hassan Rouhani.

He added the principles of such negotiations have been specified in the previous initiatives, calling for “political determination” to implement them.

Iran has always favored plans for regional dialogue and will continue to do so, Khatibzadeh emphasized.
