TEHRAN – A senior Iranian military commander ruled out the possibility of allowing foreign access to the country’s military bases, which he said are exempt from inspection under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Based on the official stance of the Iranian Armed Forces General Staff, Iran will never allow anybody to inspect its military centers, Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Army Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said.

According to the JCPOA, the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), the military sites are exempt from inspection, he added.

Last month, the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, travelled to Vienna to press the UN nuclear chief on her reading of Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA and asked if the IAEA planned to inspect Iranian military sites, something she has called for.

In a letter dated August 19 but released on August 23, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned about US lack of adherence to the nuclear deal.

Zarif has also said that Haley’s visit to the IAEA undermines “the independence and credibility” of IAEA inspectors.

TEHRAN – A senior Iranian lawmaker denounced the US call for inspection of Iran’s military sites, stressing that the Islamic Republic will never allow foreign sides to inspect its military centers.

There is no connection between the country’s military centers and its nuclear activities, Spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hossein Naqavi Hosseini underlined in an interview with Tasnim.

He added that Iran’s military sites are top secret and their “doors are closed to strangers forever.”

The official advised US officials to avoid speaking about Iran’s redlines and instead fulfil their commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 nuclear deal between the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

In August, US President Donald Trump dispatched his UN ambassador Nikki Haley to Vienna to press the UN nuclear chief on their reading of Iran’s adherence to the JCPOA.

Haley said Washington wants inspection of Iranian military and non-military sites to determine its compliance with the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

Thereafter, Iran’s mission to the IAEA issued a statement, saying the objectives and the results of Haley’s trip to Vienna “contradict” the JCPOA and Resolution 2231, which the UN Security Council adopted to endorse the nuclear agreement.
