TEHRAN (Iran News) – Tens of thousands of Scottish independence supporters marched through Glasgow in the first of a series of protests planned for the coming year.

The All Under One Banner (AUOB), an independence march from the west end to Glasgow Green took place in very poor weather conditions, BBC reported.

The UK government has said it does not support a further vote on independence.

The “emergency” march was organized in the wake of last month’s general election, which saw the pro-independence SNP win 48 of the 59 seats in Scotland while the Conservatives won a majority across the UK as a whole.

It is the first of eight marches that the grassroots AUOB group plans to hold across Scotland over the coming year as activists aim to increase the pressure for independence.

The organization has staged several similar marches and rallies in town and cities across Scotland over the past five years.

AUOB decided that the march would definitely go ahead despite the cancellation of the rally, with the group tweeting: “If we let some Scottish rain stop us marching then we’ve no chance. The march is on.”

Neil Mackay, one of the event’s organizers, said: “Organizing outdoor events in Scotland in winter is always difficult and is always subject to our weather.

Scottish voters backed remaining in the UK by 55% to 45% in a referendum in 2014 – but Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP leader, and Scotland’s first minister say she wants to hold another vote on independence later this year.

That currently looks unlikely to happen because the UK government has made clear it will not transfer the powers that Sturgeon says would be needed to ensure any referendum is legal.

The first minister has ruled out holding an unofficial referendum, similar to the disputed one in Catalonia in 2017, as she does not believe it would lead to independence regardless of the result.

Another AUOB march will be held in Glasgow in May, with similar events scheduled for Arbroath, Peebles, Elgin, Kirkcaldy, Stirling, and Edinburgh.

The protests came the day after former Labour cabinet minister and MP Ben Bradshaw declared he was “100% certain” that Scotland would choose to leave the UK in the event of a second referendum on independence.

Bradshaw told German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel: “The political class in England – and this includes my own party – must very quickly recognize the Scots’ right to self-determination”, which was then retweeted approvingly by Sturgeon.

0 for the region while more than two thirds think the process has been bad for the economy, a survey showed on Monday.

Spain’s central government took control of the region after local leaders staged a poll on secession, slated as illegal by the Constitutional Court, and then passed a unilateral declaration of independence through the parliament. In response, Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy fired the government, stripped the region of its autonomous status and called a regional election for Dec. 21.

On Sunday, the first part of the GAD3 survey showed that pro-independence parties would win the election but may not gain the parliamentary majority needed to continue with secession, Reuters reported.

Fifteen percent said they believed the process would end in an independent state, according to part two of survey of 1,233 people conducted between Oct. 30 and Nov. 3 and published in La Vanguardia newspaper on Monday.

Optimism that a negotiated solution would be found was low, with just over a fifth thinking the crisis would lead to talks between regional authorities and Madrid.

The push for independence has dragged Spain in to its worst political crisis since its return to democracy four decades ago and has deeply divided the country, fuelling anti-Spanish feelings in Catalonia and nationalist tendencies elsewhere.

The uncertainty has prompted more than 2,000 companies to relocate their legal headquarters out of the region since Oct. 1, while the Bank of Spain said if the conflict persists it could lead to slower growth and job creation.

According to the poll, 67 percent said they believed the process had hurt the economy and almost 40 percent said the company exodus would have a negative effect on growth in the short term.

Deputy Chief of Staff of the President for Political Affairs Hamid Aboutalebi made the remarks in his official Twitter page, stressing that the way out of the crisis is independence, the sovereignty of the nation, and the elimination oppression and providing respect.

“Independence and integration of countries, people’s right to sovereignty, eradication of cruelty and invasion, negotiations with dignity and equality and progressive peace, are effective methods to get out of crisis,” he noted.

The Iranian official was implicitly referring to the resignation of Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri, adding that such strategies would not lead to further peace, stability and security of the region. “The power to overcome crisis is more effective and successful than the ability to generate crisis.” Aboutalebi stated.
