TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) Vajihollah Jafari said his organization, which is in charge of a program for reviving idle small mines across the country, has defined 30 investment packages for continuing the implementation of the program in the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 21).

Speaking in a meeting for reviewing the progress of the program in the previous year and planning for the current year, Jafari said after the complete monitoring of idle and semi-active mines throughout the country 850 mines have been identified this year and 30 investment packages have been defined to be offered in 19 provinces in this regard.

As reported by the IMIDRO portal, Jafari noted that the priority for the allocation of the mentioned packages is to implement infrastructure projects that would help revive several mines together.

As such infrastructure projects progress, it is necessary to measure their effectiveness in reviving the country’s idle mines, he added.

According to the official, some 453 idle mines were activated under the framework of the program for reviving small and medium-sized mines in the previous Iranian calendar year, which created 3,500 jobs.

Jafari further noted that since the beginning of the program in 2019, over 852 mines have been revived and 13,800 jobs have been created, which has led to a 33-million-ton increase in the country’s mineral production.

The Industry, Mining, and Trade Ministry’s program for reviving small mines across the country was launched in late March 2019.

The most important goal of this program is to activate the country’s mines, which will result in increased production and employment, especially in deprived areas.

Back in December 2021, Reza Azimi, who directs the ministry’s program for reviving and developing small mines, had mentioned concluding 37 memorandums of understanding (MOU) for investment, and scientific-research cooperation with knowledge-based companies, as well as the introduction of 124 projects to Mining Investment Insurance Corporation for receiving facilities, and the support and coaching of knowledge-based companies and startups as other measures taken under the framework of the mentioned program.

Following the implementation of the mentioned program, so far various small-scale mines including chromite, manganese, hematite, dolomite, iron ore, copper, and construction stone mines have been surveyed by monitoring and diagnosing the problems of the mines and providing solutions for resolving their issues.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Mines and Metals Company (MME) has established China’s first gas-based sponge iron production unit using the Persian Direct Reduction (PERED) technology, the portal of the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) reported.

As the world’s first manufacturer of gas-based sponge iron, Iran is now transferring the technology to the world’s biggest steel producer.

The deal for the construction of the first gas-based sponge iron plant was concluded between China’s CSTM Company and MME Company from Iran as the license owner of PERED technology.

With a capacity of 300,000 tons, the plant has been launched in China’s Taiyuan city.

PERED is a new technology for producing sponge iron using natural gas as fuel, which according to MME is a masterwork of the Iranian steel industry and is more efficient and effective in all respects such as the degree of metallization of the product, fuel consumption, operating costs and ease of operation compared to similar technologies.

This technology is already being used in several production units across Iran including Shadegan Steel, Miyaneh Steel, Neyriz Steel, and Baft Steel companies.

The main difference of the PERED technology with other technologies is the high and tangible quality of the sponge iron metallization, which has been reached above 95 percent on the initial day. In other technologies, however, it is very difficult to achieve a degree of metallization above 95 percent during the first months of a unit’s operation.

As a subsidiary of IMIDRO, MME was registered in Germany in 1996.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has produced 55,974 tons of alumina powder during the first three months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-June 21).

As announced by Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), the figure shows 11 percent decline as compared to 62,789 tons of the product produced in the first three months of the previous year.

Aluminum oxide, which is commonly called alumina, is an inert, odorless, white amorphous material often used in industrial ceramics.

Alumina is an important ceramic material for industrial applications. The numerous fields of application range from construction materials, to filling materials, as well as abrasives and catalysts.

In plants and mechanical engineering, alumina ceramics are mainly used for wear and corrosion protection.

The particle size distribution largely determines the application range and the quality of an alumina powder. Reliably identifying the differences in particle size is therefore an essential requirement of the measuring instrument.

While the production of alumina powder has fallen, the production of aluminum ingot has risen 30 percent during the first quarter of this year.

The country’s aluminum ingot output stood at 131,376 tons in the three-month period of the present year, while the figure was 101,202 tons in the same time span of the previous year, data released by IMIDRO showed.

As previously announced by the organization, the production of aluminum ingot in Iran rose 61 percent during the previous Iranian calendar year 1399 (ended on March 20) compared to the figure for the preceding year.

The country’s aluminum ingot output stood at 446,800 tons in the previous year.

The country’s aluminum ingot output stood at 446,800 tons in the previous year.

Iran’s major aluminum producers had managed to produce 278,318 tons of the product in the Iranian calendar year 1398.

The country’s aluminum ingot production in the Iranian calendar year 1398 had declined eight percent in comparison to the figure for its preceding year.

IMIDRO data show that among the country’s top producers, Iranian Aluminum Company (IRALCO) had the best performance in the previous year producing 185,000 tons of aluminum ingots.

Aluminum ingot production in the country reached 41,000 tons in the last month of the previous year (February 19-March 20), registering a 38 percent rise compared to the 30,000 tons in the preceding year’s same period.

Annual production of the aluminum ingot in the country is planned to increase 63 percent by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20).

Last year, during the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s biggest aluminum production complex (in the central Fars province), the former industry minister said the country’s aluminum production is expected to be doubled with that unit going operational.

The official put the value of the Iranian mining industry’s production at about $22 billion, saying that the country is relatively self-sufficient in minerals and a great deal is also exported every year.

He went on underlying the country’s capacities in the sector, saying that Iran is ranked 18th among the world’s top aluminum producers, and with this new plant going operational the country will climb four places to stand at 14th place.”

Iran plans to reach the annual production of 1.5 million tons of aluminum ingot by the Iranian calendar year 1404 (March 2025-March 2026).

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN- Domestic production of 19,000 parts in the steel sector has saved the country €1.5 billion in 12 years, a director in Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) announced.

Making the remarks in an IMIDRO’s meeting of training, research, and technology on Monday, Amir Khorramishad, the deputy director of the organization for planning affairs, said that while the sanctions have reduced the country’s foreign currency revenues, indigenizing the production of some products has increased, which means saving the foreign currency, ISNA reported.

While the U.S. unilateral sanctions on Iran in recent years have upset the Iranian industry in some sectors, the statistics indicate that the minerals sector has not been affected by the sanctions, while it’s been also improved.

The improvement is more noticeable in the steel sector, as according to the World Steel Association (WSA), Iran became the world’s tenth-largest steel producer in 2018.

Such progress in this sector is mainly the result of “indigenizing” approach, which is seriously followed up in all industrial sectors of the country.

In fact, indigenizing the technology of manufacturing required products, equipment, and machinery to attain self-reliance is the major economic approach of the country during the sanctions.

And in terms of steel, Industry, the Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade has announced that the country has achieved proper self-reliance in this sector.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Domestic Economy Desk The Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) plans to complete and open projects worth $2.2 billion in the domestic mining sector by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 2021) in cooperation with the private companies.

IMIDRO announced this on Tuesday, concurrent with the National Day of Industry and Mine, IRNA reported.

The organization added that the implementation of the projects is expected to create at least 4,000 indirect jobs.

It said this target has been set within the framework of the country’s macro policies.

This comes as Iran’s reduced dependence on oil revenues has heightened expectations that the sector should play a more significant role in the domestic economy. To this end, IMIDRO has adopted new policies to minimize the outflow of foreign currency resources and boost domestic production.

The organization also seeks to increase the mining sector’s share in the country’s GDP and exports, of which booting employment is an important prerequisite.

Over 90 percent of the country’s mines are located within 20 kilometers of rural areas. IMIDRO plans to accelerate balanced development in Iran’s deprived areas in cooperation with private companies through designing plans to this end.

Generating revenues through boosting non-oil exports is among the other main approaches of the Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade and IMIDRO. To achieve this, the mining sector’s share of the country’s overseas sales of non-oil products has been increased from 20 percent to 33 percent.

Exports from the domestic mining sector surpassed $9.2 billion in the year to March 2020, accounting for up to 22 percent of the country’s annual non-oil exports.

In the previous Iranian calendar year, IMIDRO completed mining projects valued at $3.2 billion despite the unprecedented US sanctions on the country, imposed unilaterally following Washington’s May 2018 withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed between Tehran and the P5+1 in July 2015.

IMIDRO is also expected to prepare the ground for the inauguration of projects worth $1 billion by the private sector by March 2021.

Exploration activities

Reports indicate that by September 2018, IMIDRO had carried out exploration activities in the country in an area of 250,000 square kilometers. However, since that date, until March 2020, a total of 4,000 square kilometers were added to the area under exploration by the organization.

In December 2018, IMIDRO drew up a plan to revive small mines in the country shut down or operating at half capacity due to domestic and international issues, and began its implementation in the previous year.

Small mines are important in view of their large number (98 percent of the country’s mines) as well as the potential to create employment (85 percent of the total capacity of the country’s mines), and stimulate domestic production. These mines can play a very significant role in generating sustainable employment in the mining sector and accelerating balanced development across the country.

In the year to March 2020, 146 small mines were revived in the country’s less developed areas.

In the current year, plans are underway to revive 200 mines and construct 25 processing units in the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Over 95 percent of the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) plan for reviving small mines across the country has been realized in the first 11 months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2019-February 19, 2020).

Based on the mentioned plan, IMIDRO was going to revive 150 idle small mines across the country in collaboration with the Industry, Mining, and Trade Ministry, IRNA reported on Monday.

Implementation of the mentioned program is going to create 3,000 job opportunities in the country.

According to an IMIDRO report, as of February 19, a total of 1,483 idle mines were identified, for 881 of which necessary actions and solutions have been determined.

Back in January, IMIDRO Head Khodadad Gharibpour, announced that 66 percent of the program for reviving 150 small mines in the present year was realized.

The official said that his organization revived 99 small mines in the country since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year up to January 11.

IMIDRO head mentioned this plan as one of the most significant plans of “Resistance Economy”, saying that his organization is strongly determined to carry out it.

The official has said reviving small mines stands among the top priorities of IMIDRO in the current Iranian calendar year.

He said based on an MOU signed two years ago, 500 small mines were planned to be revived throughout the country in a course of five years to create jobs for 25,000 people.

Based on the statistics released by Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade there are about 4,000 inactive mines in the country at present, the official said, adding they include nine percent of metals mines, 21 percent of decorative stones mines, 51 percent of constructional materials mines, and 15 percent of other minerals mines.

Holding 68 types of different minerals Iran stands at the 10th place in the world in terms of diversity of its mineral reserves.

The country has over 60 billion tons of untapped mineral deposits, of which 40 billion tons are proven reserves, placing Iran at the 15th place globally.
