TEHRAN (Iran News) – Annual polymer exports from Imam Khomeini port up 14%. Some 109,000 tons of polymer products were exported from Imam Khomeini Port in southwestern Khuzestan province during the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20), up 14 percent compared to the preceding year.

As Shana reported, Bandar Imam Petrochemical Company (BIPC)’s output hit new records in the previous year in line with the year’s motto which was “surge in production”.

The PVC unit of the mentioned company also produced 166,000 tons of PVC products in the mentioned year, up 2,000 tons from the figure for the preceding year.

Iran exported over $1.31 billion worth of polymer products in the previous year, according to the chairman of the Export Committee of Iran National Plastic and Polymer Industries Association.

Speaking at an international conference on promoting polymer exports in Tehran on June 1, Masoud Jamali said: “We are top exporter of polymer products to Armenia and the second biggest exporter of such products to the Republic of Azerbaijan.”

The mentioned conference was held with the aim of exploring issues and challenges in the country’s polymer industries and to discuss ways of increasing exports.

“In this conference, we have focused on empowering and informing the businessmen and traders active in this sector,” Jamali said in the opening ceremony.

Introducing Iran’s polymer export capacities and opportunities, identifying new target markets, and getting acquainted with the laws and regulations of the mentioned countries were among the topics explored in this conference.

According to Reza Tofiqi, the secretary of the conference, one of the best ways for boosting non-oil exports and especially polymer exports is to sign trade agreements with other countries.

“In recent years, a preferential trade agreement has been signed with the Eurasian Economic Union, which covers a significant number of the items,” Tofiqi said.

He said that 60 percent of the items in the agreement are related to the polymer and plastics industries, adding that if traders have enough knowledge in this regard, they can supply part of the union’s $4.5 billion imports of such products, while currently, Iran exports only $600 million of the mentioned commodities to the union.

Tofiqi further noted that Pakistan imports $2.2 billion of polymer products a year and said: “Iran ranks sixth among the top polymer exporters to this country with only $103 million of exports; the country accounts for five percent of Pakistan’s total imports, while Iran has a 20-year agreement with this country.”

According to the official, government bodies should reconsider the trade of polymer products with other countries like Pakistan in order to include these products in the list of items with tariff reductions.

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – Deputy Minister of Roads and Transportation and Head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) says some of Iran’s port operators have come under cyberattacks whose sources were abroad.

Speaking in a press conference and responding for recent halt in container operations of Rajaee Port, Mohammad Rastad said that some port operations in the country have come under cyberattack whose sources were abroad. He went on to say that but the officials could manage it and no ship faced delay in loading or unloading and everything is now normal.

He further said that since the outbreak of the Coronavirus in the country, loading and unloading in the ports have not come to a halt and since March 20 and beginning of the new year, ports in the country have had 19m times of loading and unloading which shows 35.8 percent decrease comparing to the same period last year, and expressed hope everything would become normal and national trade can compensate this lag very soon.

Rastad added that since the beginning of 2020, world economy has been affected by the virus and marine transportation is not an exception, either, because it is part of global economy.

He said the global order for building vessels and ship has nosedived, adding that the order for building ship has fallen by 71 percent.

He further said the price of renting a ship was once $35,000 per day but because of the pandemic, the price has slumped to even lower than $5,000 in the first quarter of the year.

Rastad reiterated that the pandemic had the most negative impact on marine tourism than marine trade and all marine voyages have almost halted in the country.

He said despite observing all sanitary protocols, the number of marine passengers in the country has decreased by 97 percent this year.

On the amount of basic goods in the ports, he said some 4.154m tons of basic goods are currently in the ports, of which over 3m tons are at Imam Khomeini Port.

Rastad added that currently 25 ship have berthed at ports while they are unloading their cargos which weigh around 588,782 tons and 23 more ship are waiting to berth whose cargo weighs some 1.7m tons.

He further said corn, wheat, barley, soya, oil seed and rice are of the major commodities in the ports.

He stated the total government and non-government investment in the national commercial ports till the end of last year was around 158,000b rials as the most investment has been at Imam Khomeini Port.

According to Ravanbakhsh Behzadian, the announced figure shows a growth of 67 percent in comparison with the same period in the preceding year.

Some 6.98 million tons of basic goods were imported in the said time, registering 64 percent growth year-on-year, he added.

Of the said imported amount, 7 million tons have been through Imam Khomeini port, the official said.

An official from Iranian ministry of industry, mine and trade told Mehr news agency in early August that the volume of ministry’s registered orders for imports of basic goods is five-fold more than domestic need for the products.

“The ordered goods will be imported incrementally,” the officials said.

“Some of the ordered goods are now at the country’s customs and will be released gradually to regulate domestic market,” he added.

“Some parts of the orders are made by state-run companies and the industry ministry is the body in charge of them,” the official said.

“The ministry will supervise distribution of the goods to regulate domestic market and to protect both producers and consumers,” he added.

The official underlined that presently, Iran’s domestic market is facing no difficulty with supplying basic goods.

Supplying basic goods is one of the major issues on the Iranian government’s agenda in the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 21) and it is one of the focal pillars in the national budget bill for this year.

In this due, the government is taking numerous strategies for the supply of these goods. One of them is allocating foreign currency for the imports of basic goods through domestic Forex Management Integrated System (locally known as NIMA) which allows importers to supply their required foreign currency without specific problems.
