FTZs Enjoy Positive Trade Balance in Past 2 Years

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Secretary of Iranian Free Zones High Council Hamidreza Momeni said the trade balance of the country’s free and special economic zones has been positive in the past two years despite the negative balance of the country’s foreign trade, IRNA reported.

Momeni made the remarks in a meeting with the deputies and managers of Imam Khomeini Airport City (IKAC) on Thursday.

Today, the free zones are in a good condition trade as wise and positive development measures have been taken which have led to significant growth in these zones, the official said.

He further announced the establishment of a finance council in the Iranian Free Zones High Council, saying that soon advisory groups will be sent to all of the country’s free zones and the zones can access sustainable financial resources for implementing new development programs.

According to the official, the country’s free and economic zones should become more productive in order to be able to fund their own development projects in the future.

Mentioning the trade advantages of IKAC as a free zone, Momeni said IKAC can benefit from the experience of other free zones across the country in order to maximize its capacities.

Earlier this month, Momeni had said that removing the problems of the private sector active in the country’s free and economic zones is the new approach of this council.

The development of free trade zones and special economic zones through production, exports, and investment is one of the goals of creating these zones in the country.

To achieve this target, different measures were taken in the past two years, such as attracting innovative and technological units to these areas and introducing investment opportunities and advantages in these zones.

The establishment of free trade zones in Iran dates back to the Iranian calendar year 1368 (March 1989- March 1990) following the fall in the country’s oil income in the preceding year which prompted the government to promote non-oil exports.

The first two free trade zones of Iran were established in the south of the country. The first one was Kish Free Trade Zone established in 1368 on Kish Island in the Persian Gulf and the second one was Qeshm Free Trade Zone established the year after on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

Some five other free trade zones have been also established in the country since then, including Chabahar in southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan Province, Arvand in southwestern Khuzestan Province, Anzali in northern Gilan Province, Aras in East-Azarbaijan Province, and Maku in West-Azarbaijan Province, both in the northwest of the country.

IKAC builds new aircraft hangar

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A groundbreaking ceremony for the construction project of an aircraft hangar for Qeshm Airlines was held in Imam Khomeini Airport City (IKAC) on Monday.

With the initiation of the project, IKAC and Qeshm Airlines will build a new aircraft hangar in an area of 16,000 square meters, said IKAC’s managing director, Mohammad Mahdi Karbalaei.

He added that cooperation between IKAC and airlines would lead to expansion of the aviation area, development and profitability of the airlines.

Imam Khomeini International Airport registered 47,446 takeoffs and landings in the last fiscal year that ended on March 20, 2019, to register a 19% decline.

More than 7.27 million passengers and 141,704 tons of cargos were transported from the airport during the period to rank third on the list of Iran’s busiest airports in 2018, The figures show 19% and 14% decline YOY.

IKAC’s development gets Iranian investors

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Managing director of Imam Khomeini Airport City said over 50 Iranian companies have registered to invest in the IKAC’s development as a free zone.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 4th International Exhibition of Transportation, Logistics and Related Industries at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla on Monday, Rostami said, “There are many investment opportunities in IKAC for local and international companies due to its closeness to the capital city and access to IKAC surrounding areas.”

“This year, we succeeded in gaining number transit by the Islamic Republic of Iran for import and export,” he added.

“As a result, transits through FTZ at IKAC will experience a boost in the near future,” Rostami noted.

He described the ongoing exhibition as a great opportunity to better introduce the potentials of domestic experts to the investors.

Some 312 domestic companies along with 15 foreign firms are showcasing their products in the exhibition which will end today.

Logistics and smart transportation, energy management, and the increase of the level of transportation services in the aviation, maritime and rail sectors are among the objectives of the Logitrans Expo 2019.

IKAC’s development sector has already signed a contract with Iranian knowledge-based companies to invest in development projects, such as services, airport facilities, and equipment, information technology, navigation and flight control.
