TEHRAN (Iran News) – Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi says the country will name its next homegrown supercomputer after Maryam Mirzakhani, the late Iranian math genius.Azari Jahromi made the remarks in a tweet on Sunday, when the country launched a homegrown supercomputer named “Simorgh”, which is a benevolent, mythical bird of prey in Iranian mythology and literature.

Simorgh’s current processing power is more than one petaflops (i.e. one thousand million million (1015) floating-point operations per second).

This supercomputer will support businesses with the goal of developing artificial intelligence. It is able to do various tasks including Big Data Analysis, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and Genetic Data Analysis.

Jahromi tweeted, in mid-August 2019, promised that Simorgh would be “100 times more powerful than previous ones.”

The name “Simorgh” derives from an ancient Iranian mythological bird, very like the Phoenix in other lore, that is gigantic, universally benevolent, and unilaterally female. This represents an interesting symbol for Iran’s supercomputer—a replete sort of union between the country’s past and its dream for the future.

Iran is making a big play at present to compete in the ever-deepening trenches of global information technology.

In his tweet, the ICT minister vowed that the next supercomputer, whose development began today, will be named “Maryam” in memory of Mirzakhani.

He said the capacity of “Maryam” will be 100 times more than Simorgh.

Maryam Mirzakhani, the internationally-renowned Iranian mathematician and the first female winner of Fields Medal, died of breast cancer in July 2017.

The 40-year-old mathematician, a professor at Stanford University, was the first Iranian woman elected to the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in May 2016, in recognition of her “distinguished and continuing achievement in original research.”

With past honorees, including renowned physicist Albert Einstein, and inventors Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell, being a member of the organization is considered to be as one of the highest achievements for scientists in the United States.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The deputy minister for Communications and Information Technology (ICT) said that the first test of high-speed 5G mobile internet technology has been successfully tested in Iran with a speed of 1.5 gigabits per second (Gb/s).

Referring to the reasons behind Iran’s entry into the G5 technology, Sattar Hashemi said, “ICT’s Research Center is where the first 5th generation communications site and all stakeholders in this field can participate in the research and development (R&D) of this project,” Mehr News Agency (MNA) reported on July 22.

Noting that in the phase of a pilot test of the mobile project, a speed of 1.5 gigabits per second was successfully tested, he added, “5G also has a significant improvement over 4G in terms of data transmission delay, so that we could reduce the delay by 5 to 6 milliseconds in this test.”

Hashemi further said that targeting the speed of data exchange in 5G network in the world is theoretically one to 20 gigabits. “This speed is proportional to the investment and other components but the average considered for it (5G) will be a speed between 1.5 and 2 gigabits.”

He reiterated that the test trial in ICT Research Center would enable all stakeholders of the ethnology in Iran, including other mobile operators, to contribute to the project.

Currently, the average speed of the Internet in 4G communications is estimated at about 20 Mbps per user, the Deputy ICT minister added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said on Sunday Mobile Telecommunication Company of Iran will present 5G Internet within months.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony to inaugurate the biggest data center in western and northwestern Iran, Azari Jahromi said the 5G Internet laboratory will be unveiled within two weeks, IRNA reported.

He described the Mobile Telecommunication Company of Iran as the biggest operator in the Middle East which has the widest communication coverage.

He said that the budget has been allocated by the government for expanding the national data network.

Azari Jahromi also said the goal of the country is to have five million Internet TV subscribers, adding that this field of economy is a huge opportunity.

The number of Iranians with access to high-speed mobile Internet services has increased exponentially over the past seven years to reach a total of 70 million, said the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) last week.

IRNA cited figures by CRA as saying that coverage of third and fourth generation of mobile Internet had increased from 12 percent of the population in 2013 to nearly 83 percent this year.

It said the total number of 3G and 4G SIM cards owned by Iranians had exceeded 100 million, adding that around 70 million are currently using the high-speed services on an active basis.

The total number of mobile phone subscribers in Iran, a country of nearly 85 million, is currently around 120 million, said the report.

Fast Internet is currently accessible across 83 percent of Iran’s roads and railways, said the report, adding that the figure was almost zero in 2006 according to CRA figures.

The report said, however, that increased coverage of mobile Internet in Iran had come at the expense of reduced access to fast broadband.

The figures showed that using fast broadband had declined to cover only 10 percent of users in Iran this year, down from 42 million users or 53 percent of the population in 2017.

Increased use of high-speed mobile Internet in Iran has come despite restrictions imposed on the country’s access to equipment and technologies needed to expand the communication services sector.

The restrictions, imposed by the United States, have mainly targeted foreign companies delivering key equipment and expertise to Iran.

He broke the news while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

“Recently, a highly organized and state-sponsored cyberattack was carried out against our e-government infrastructures, which was successfully identified and repelled by the country’s cyber security shield,” the ICT minister told reporters.

“The attack was really massive,” he said, adding “I can’t disclose any details right now, but all aspects of the attack have been already discussed and there will be certainly a report on it later.”

“I can’t say the attack was carried out by which country right now,” he said.

Elsewhere, when asked about the possibility of another nationwide internet shutdown with the establishment of ‘national internet’, he said “National internet makes no sense. Internet is a global network, it’s not internal or external. The National Information Network is a different story from a national internet.’

“The National Information Network is being followed up by the ICT ministry in earnest, in accordance with the Leader’s directives, so that we can secure our share in the world,” he added.

“The aim of the National Information Network is to boost the country’s economic growth in the digital economy sector. What is being said about an internet shutdown is a sheer lie,” the minister stressed.

“We have the capacity for scientific experience transfer between the two countries which can be pursued directly by the universities and research centers,” Gholami said during the meeting in Tehran on Sunday.

He described scientific cooperation as useful for both sides, and said, “There are other fields for the exchange of experiences too. One of these options is the science and technology parks.”

During the meeting Vega stressed further expansion of ties with Iran, and submitted a letter from the Cuban science minister to Gholami to invite him for a visit to Havana.

In relevant remarks in late January, President Rouhani in a meeting with Bandrich Vega underlined the need for enhancing bilateral relations with Havana.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is after broadening of ties with the Cuban government,” President Rouhani said during the meeting in Tehran.

The Iranian president said that Tehran-Havana relations have been constructive since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, adding that Iran and Cuba encountered similar antagonistic plots in their post-revolutionary eras and there is no doubt that among the world revolutions, the names of Imam Khomeini and Fidel Castro will be remembered as outstanding revolutionary leaders.

Rouhani stressed that Tehran is against imposing sanctions as an outdated, wrong method, and said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran is against enforcing oppressive sanctions on the independent nations such as Cuba.”

Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi, Iranian Minister of Communications and Information Technology (ICT), who was summoned to Iranian parliament to answer the questions posed by two MPs, managed to convince the legislators with his explanation.

The two questions were jointly submitted by Seyyedeh Hamideh Zarabadi, the MP from the Constituency of Qazvin, and Seyyedeh Fatemeh Hosseini, the MP from the Constituency of Tehran.

They wanted to know what happened to the projects defined in 2012-13 to upgrade and renovate data transit networks. The second question was why those projects were replaced with Tadbir (shrewdness) Project. Also they interrogated the minister about maintenance contracts.

After the questions were read in the open meeting of Sunday, the Iranian ICT minister got behind the lectern and offered his explanation.

After the two MPs posing the questions said that they did not get convinced with Azari Jahromi’s responses, the questioning was put to the vote. The lawmakers voted for the ICT minister and the questioning was annulled. Out of 205 legislators present in the meeting, 98 MPs voted for the minister, 87 MPs voted against, and 7 lawmakers abstained.
