Top EU Court Says Eastern States Broke Law by Refusing to Host Refugees

According To Iran News, The European Union’s top court ruled on Thursday that Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic had broken the law by refusing to host refugees to help ease the burden on southern states such as Greece and Italy after a surge in migrant arrivals from 2015.

The ruling underscores Europe’s bitter divisions over migration, though the three ex-communist nations face no immediate penalty as the relocation of tens of thousands of people agreed by the EU was only envisaged until 2017.

“By refusing to comply with the temporary mechanism for the relocation of applicants for international protection, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic have failed to fulfil their obligations under European Union law,” the Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union said in its ruling, Reuters reported.

The Eurosceptic, nationalist governments on the EU’s eastern flank had cited national security reasons in refusing to take in any of the mostly Muslim refugees and migrants who had fled wars and poverty in the Middle East, North Africa and beyond.

Frontline states such as Italy and Greece complained angrily over the lack of European solidarity as they struggled with mass arrivals that overwhelmed their security and welfare systems.

Wealthy northern European states such as Germany also criticized the ex-communist east for refusing to help while continuing to benefit from generous EU financial aid.

More than a million people reached Europe’s shores from across the Mediterranean in 2015, catching the EU unprepared as they trekked across the continent and triggering a new wave of support in some quarters for far-right, anti-immigrant parties.

The EU has since cracked down on immigration, fortifying its external borders and offering money and aid to countries such as Turkey to help prevent migrants from heading to Europe.

But the internal EU divisions on migration are far from healed. The 2015 mass influx of migrants at least partly contributed to Britain’s 2016 decision to leave the EU, in the worst setback for European integration since World War Two.

The EU now faces a fresh test of its unity from the coronavirus pandemic, with member states mostly pursuing their own strategies to counter the spread of the disease and the worst affected nations – Italy and Spain – again complaining of a lack of European solidarity and aid.

The Foreign Ministry of Iran called in Hungary ambassador to Tehran, Zoltan Varga-Haszonits, on Tuesday to address students deportation.

Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi notified the envoy of the Iranian government’s protest against the unconventional behavior by police and the medical staff of Szent Laszlo Hospital in the city of Budapest towards the Iranian university students who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Araqchi also slammed as unacceptable the Hungarian government’s decision to expel 15 Iranian university students that were suspected cases of coronavirus and asked the ambassador to inform the Hungarian authorities about the Islamic Republic of Iran’s call for reconsidering the decision.

It was also emphasized that the government of Hungary is responsible for providing the Iranian students in the European country with appropriate accommodation and health and medical services, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website.

For his part, the Hungarian ambassador gave a report of the latest status of the spread of coronavirus in Hungary and the government’s measures to handle the crisis and promised to convey the Iranian government’s request to his country as soon as possible.

The Hungarian ambassador to Tehran has been invited by the Director-General of Europe at the Iranian Foreign Ministry twice over the past two weeks in connection with the recent incidents.

Currently, around 2,500 Iranian students are studying in the universities of Hungary.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Embassy in Budapest is in close contact with the Iranian students and also with the Hungarian officials to make sure that the university students are in good health and the situation of their living accommodations and education is all right.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held separate meetings with the ambassadors of Oman and Hungary in Tehran on Sunday.

In one of the meetings, Oman and Hungary outgoing Ambassadors in Tehran Saud bin Ahmad Khalid al-Barwani met with Zarif.

Al Barwani, who has come to the end of his term in office, was appointed as Oman’s envoy to Iran in January 2014.

In the other meeting, Hungary’s new Ambassador to Tehran Zoltan Varga-Haszonits submitted a copy of his credentials to the Iranian top diplomat.

In a meeting with Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary Laszlo Kover in 2016, Zarif had called for efforts to boost cooperation between Tehran and Budapest by facilitating banking interaction and easing visa restrictions for the people of the two countries.

In May 2018, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban on his reelection, hoping for serious and substantial steps for closer ties between Tehran and Budapest.

“I hope that in light of their common political will, Iran and Hungary can take serious, fundamental steps to deepen and cement bilateral relations and promote international peace and security,” Rouhani said in a message.

Zarif held talk with each of them seperately.
