HTC is launching more devices in the future, despite having the worst of days, as the company is apparently working on a device that will be fueled by a Snapdragon 855 that could also be armed with a 5G modem.

It’s no secret that HTC has been having a tough time this year, with its new smartphones failing to make a big impression on consumers, but the company isn’t giving up its mobile ambitions. According to new information, the Taiwanese firm is working on an upcoming device that will not only feature a Snapdragon 855 but also support 5G.

Earlier this year, HTC announced it was laying off almost a quarter of its workforce. Combined with a 68 percent decline in sales, things aren’t looking good for what was one of the first companies to launch a 4G phone.

But according to the LinkedIn profile of senior RF designer Kevin Duo, HTC is aiming to turn its fortunes around with a new device powered by Qualcomm’s future Snapdragon 855. Like Huawei’s recently revealed Kirin 980—one of our top picks of IFA 2018—the US firm’s next SoC will be built on the 7-nanometer process. Duo writes that HTC is currently sampling the 855, which will bring plenty of performance and efficiency improvements over the current Snapdragon 845 that’s found in many flagships, Techspot reported.

Additionally, the profile suggests that the Snapdragon 855 in HTC’s phone will be paired with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 5G modem. While the SoC features an X24 LTE modem as standard, manufacturers have the option to pair it with the 5G-capable X50, which is what HTC appears to be doing. Qualcomm says it is “on track to help launch the first 5G mobile hotspots by the end of 2018.”

Smartphones featuring the Snapdragon 855 aren’t expected to arrive until the middle of next year, so we’ve still a while to wait before HTC’s mystery device is unveiled. Other companies will doubtlessly be implementing the new chips in their next-gen handsets, too, so it remains to be seen if HTC can drag itself out of its current downward trend by beating them to the punch. But its seems the one-time big industry player isn’t ready to stop trying just yet.

Over 60 sales drop and a production estimate of only 2 million units for 2018 makes it hard to considering a bright future for the company, as its latest flagship phone is getting slammed by reviewers for its non-functioning non-buttons, and a high entry price VR experience.

HTC partnered with Google to launch the Android platform, but it has struggled to remain relevant in the face of ever-increasing competition from the likes of Samsung, Huawei, and Apple. The company has been losing money quarter after quarter for years, but this may be the beginning of the end. After releasing its latest flagship phone, HTC’s sales fell by the largest margin yet.

According to HTC’s latest numbers, it took in $72 million (2.2 billion Taiwanese dollars) during June. That compares to $226.5 million (6.9 billion Taiwanese dollars) in June of 2017. This is a whopping 68 percent year-over-year decline. Sales were even a few million lower than they were in May, suggesting an ongoing downward trend, Extremetech reported

Such a huge drop in sales would be bad under any circumstances, but this comes just as HTC has launched a new phone. The U12+ is the company’s latest attempt to win back market share, but the phone has received largely negative reviews. The U12+ doesn’t have any physical buttons, relying instead on pressure-sensitive nubs that plug into the “Edge Sense” squeeze feature. The experience is terrible. I feel like HTC is falling apart after using this phone. No functional company could greenlight that phone. There are also no US carrier deals, and the phone costs $800.

HTC doesn’t provide profits on a monthly basis, so we don’t know how much it lost during June. It’s certain to have lost something, though. In the most recent quarter, HTC bled about $170 million. Even if its losses remain steady for the rest of the year, that would be $680 million. You may recall HTC pulled in $1.1 billion from a deal involving the transfer of 2,000 engineers to Google. That money isn’t going to last long with HTC hemorrhaging money like this.

The HTC Dream was the first Android device to hit the market.

These disappointing monthly results come on the heels of HTC’s announcement that it plans to lay off a quarter of its existing workforce, some 1,500 individuals. HTC had nearly 20,000 workers in 2013, but its fortunes had already started to turn at that point. Its share of the smartphone market peaked in 2011 at 10.7 percent. Currently, HTC makes up less than 1 percent of the global market.

HTC has been doing the same thing for years, and that thing hasn’t worked. Its hardware, software, warranty support, and cloud services are falling behind even newer competitors like OnePlus. Unless HTC can pull off a miracle, it’s probably destined to be acquired for its patent portfolio.

HTC is the latest to hop onto the blockchain bandwagon, with the company announcing plans to make a new blockchain-powered Android phone, as first reported by TheNextWeb.

The company is naming it Exodus and giving it a universal wallet and hardware support for cryptocurrencies and decentralized apps.

To start with, the Exodus phone will have support for bitcoin, ethereum, and other major networks, with more partnerships expected to come later on. HTC envisions a native blockchain network that uses Exodus phones as nodes that support cryptocurrency trading between users. HTC is also reportedly considering allowing people to purchase the Exodus phone with cryptocurrency. No price has been set yet for the phone.

HTC Vive founder Phil Chen will be heading all blockchain initiatives. The move follows the recent trend of Facebook Messenger and Instagram executives switching over to lead a blockchain division for Facebook. Accordingly, Chen’s new title will be “decentralized chief officer.” We’ve also reached out to HTC for more information.

Chen said during the New York City blockchain conference, Consensus 2018, today: “We envision a phone where you hold your own keys, you own your own identity and data, and your phone is the hub.”

HTC’s Exodus might be the world’s second blockchain-powered phone. The first one, created by Sirin Labs, called Finney, is a phone that lets people store and use digital currencies while skipping transaction fees. It costs $1,000.

It’s interesting to note the range of companies that have launched their own blockchain initiatives, from established companies seeking more profits and to remain competitive to decentralized networks, to those seeking novelty, and others that are trying to rescue their images. HTC, which laid off a significant portion of its US staff this year and merged its smartphone and virtual reality divisions, might fall in the last category of companies.

After a couple of teases earlier this year, HTC has finally unveiled its upcoming standalone VR headset at Vive Developer Conference in Beijing.

Dubbed the Vive Focus, this all-in-one device features inside-out 6-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) “world-scale” tracking, meaning it doesn’t require external base stations nor sensors, so you can get positional tracking anywhere at any time — even on a train or plane, should you wish to. While at least a couple of Chinese manufacturers have announced standalone 6DoF VR headsets before, HTC claims that the Focus will be the first of such kind to actually hit the market.

But that’s not to say that developers can’t add 6DoF hand input to the Focus. Also announced today is the Vive Wave VR open platform, which is basically Daydream for China with 12 hardware partners already signed up, including Quanta, Pimax, Nubia, iQIYI and more. With the Vive Wave SDK, vendors can integrate accessories — be it a Leap Motion, gloves or even outside-in solutions for 6DoF input (and potentially eye-tracking solutions to ease up rendering resources).

So when developers port their Vive content to Vive Wave, they can choose to adopt 3DoF hand input or keep 6DoF by using additional accessories. One such example is a VR game called Spark of Light which, according to its developer, only took three hours to port the original Vive version to Vive Wave. HTC Vive’s Associate Vice President Raymond Pao added that existing Daydream and Samsung Gear VR content would take less than a week to port to Vive Wave. Developers who are already using Unity will enjoy the added benefit of the new one-click process to publish to Viveport, along with in-app payment support starting with China.

“In the past, standalones have always kind of represented a mediocre balance, where you don’t have much content and you can only do rotational, and it’s not that much different than Cardboard except now you have one individual machine,” HTC Vive’s China President Alvin Wang Graylin told Engadget. “Now you can essentially do most of the things that you could do on a high-end machine on a standalone.”

“Now you can essentially do most of the things that you could do on a high-end machine on a standalone.”

We already knew that the Focus packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with instant on support, and now we’re told that it also features a “high-resolution” AMOLED screen plus a rotational head strap that’s similar to the Vive’s Deluxe Audio Strap. Perhaps the only surprising bit of info is that the Focus comes with a 3DoF controller, though I was assured that it will still give “a very good experience” when paired with the 6DoF headset.

At the same time, the OpenVR-compatible SDK optimizes the content for medium-level hardware –- be it Focus-like standalone devices or even phone-based solutions (like HTC’s very own Link) — in order to keep the latency to below 20 ms. According to Graylin, China’s standalone VR market’s revenue share grew from 5 percent to a whopping 24 percent in Q3 alone, while mobile VR still has 50 percent revenue share in the same region, so he believes that developers around the world will want to take advantage of Vive Wave to tackle both markets. On the other side of the field, hardware manufacturers will finally be able to standardize their devices in order to boost VR experience across the industry.

Going back to the Focus, one potential use case that intrigued me the most is that it can be hooked up to other HTC headsets — be it the Focus or even the original Vive — for social interaction. According to Graylin, this can be applied to a classroom where the teacher is doing a demonstration, while the students are all equipped with a Focus each and can see each other in the same virtual space. Better yet, they can also share virtual objects. Other similar use cases include Second Life-like social platforms, or it can be something as simple as watching movies with friends in a virtual cinema — not an entirely new concept but now you can do so pretty much anywhere you want.

While today marked the official unveiling of the Vive Focus, HTC is still mum on availability and pricing. Graylin only made it clear that there won’t be a Daydream version of the Focus yet, as HTC is, ahem, “focusing on the Focus for China” for the remainder of this year. Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond, Facebook has already announced its very own Oculus Gostandalone 6DoF VR headset, which will be available for $199 early next year. We’ll have an update as soon as we hear back from HTC, and stay tuned for our upcoming hands-on later.
