Zolfaqari told Tasnim that in the current year, the three terror groups that intended to make disruptive moves inside the country were identified and traced by security and intelligence forces.

Following round-the-clock intelligence activities, the three groups were smashed and their members were arrested by the forces before they could carry out their terrorist operations, he said.

Earlier this month, eight members of the Daesh terrorist group convicted of carrying out attacks on the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini in June 2017 were executed.

A court had sentenced the terrorists to death in May for their role in last year’s terror attacks in Tehran.

On June 7, 2017, members of Daesh armed with grenades, suicide belts and machine guns launched simultaneous attacks on Iran’s parliament building in downtown Tehran and on the mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini.

The attacks left 17 people dead and more than 40 others wounded.

All of the five gunmen directly involved in the attacks were killed by the security forces.

Iranian Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs Hossein Zolfaqari criticized some neighboring countries for not preventing recent insecurity along common borders and warned that if they fail to act, the Islamic Republic will target terrorist strongholds in the countries.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Zolfaqari pointed to recent terrorist attacks against Iranian security forces in western and southeastern border areas and said the terror groups are based in some neighboring countries.

“We have let those countries’ officials know that they, themselves, should deal with the terrorists and that if they fail to do so, we will have to target the terrorists’ strongholds along the borders to ensure our security,” he said.

“We know that in the recent incidents, some countries and their intelligence services have supported the terrorist groups in creating insecurity.”

Zolfaqari added, ” While these measures are unbearable for us and all the security forces, they are not so (serious) as to deal a major blow to the country’s security.”

The remarks came a few days after anti-revolutionary terrorists attacked a border post of the IRGC Ground Force’s Hamzeh Seyed al-Shohada Base in Iran’s western province of Kurdistan, killing 11 forces of the base.

In the clash with the terrorists, a number of terrorists were killed and a number of others suffered injuries and escaped the scene, according to a statement by the IRGC released on Saturday.

The IRGC emphasized that “a deadly and crushing revenge” awaits the terrorist and anti-revolutionary groups and their supporters for committing this crime.

In another clash last month with a terrorist cell in Tahlab in Mirjaveh near the border with Pakistan, two local Basij (volunteer) forces and an IRGC force were martyred

The IRGC is tasked with protecting the country’s northwestern and southeastern borders.

TEHRAN – Deputy Interior Minister Hossein Zolfaqari has shed light on the root causes of the recent protests which broke out across the country and died out after a week, saying the ministry has provided President Rouhani with an inclusive report on the sources of public discontent.

The report has been issued to give an objective account of the recent unrest and is devoid of any political bias so as to avoid making miscalculations, Zolfaqari was quoted by IRNA as saying on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli announced that he has presented the report to the president.

Rahmani Fazli said based on information provided by law enforcement and security bodies, the Interior Ministry has addressed and identified the causes behind the unrest and has suggested solutions to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

It came days after President Rouhani ordered the interior minister to prepare and present a detailed report on the recent unrest, in coordination with other state bodies.

Interior Ministry cites trust deficit, unfulfilled expectations raised in presidential elections, and provocations by foreign enemies as the major causes of protests.

Elaborating on the report, Zolfaqari said the activities of Iran’s foreign enemies – especially the United States, its regional servants and opposition groups – was one of the reasons behind the unrest.

Another reason, the official said, is a decline in public trust which could be attributed to many reasons, including governmental bodies’ incompetence in meeting the needs of the society, certain disputes and weaknesses.

He added that expectations also soared during the recent presidential election campaigns, leading to an accumulation of unfulfilled aspirations and popular discontent.

Zolfaqari said since the beginning of the current Persian year (March 21), 37% of the protests held across the country were economy-related, with 74% of those protesters dissatisfied with the illegal financial and credit institutions.

He also said the vast majority of the protesters didn’t have college degree, while only one percent of them held master’s degree. “Also, 84% of them were under 35 years old with no criminal records.”

Pointing to foreign forces’ role in the protests, the official said their activities against Iran reached its peak on January 1, when “the enemies intended to incite individuals to resort to armed action against the country’s security.”

“Because of their deep faith, beliefs and fear of undermining the country’s security, the Iranian people did not show support for the protests,” he stressed.

However, unless rapid steps are taken within the country’s structural-legal system, public discontent is not expected to be lessened, he concluded.
