Hossein Sheikholeslam, a former Iranian ambassador to Damascus, has said the U.S. military presence in Syria was a failure and called Washington’s move in removing forces from Syria a “wise” act.

Talking to ISNA in interview published on Friday, the former ambassador said the U.S. has played no role in resolving the problems faced by the Syrians.

He noted that the Syrian people should determine their country’s destiny and no country has the right to interfere.

Trump on December 19 announced that U.S. troops had defeated the Daesh terrorists in Syria and he sought to pull some 2,000 U.S. troops out of Syria.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi has welcomed Trump’s decision, saying the U.S. military presence in the Middle East fuels insecurity in the region.

“Basically, U.S. forces’ arrival and presence in the region was a wrong, illogical, tension-provoking and crisis-inducing move from the outset, and has always been one of the key contributors to instability and insecurity in the region,” said Qassemi in a statement posted the Foreign Ministry website on December 22.

Iran, Russia and Turkey, known as the Astana Group, have succeeded to bring the warring sides in Syria to the negotiating table and guarantee ceasefire in some parts of the country.

The foreign ministers of the three countries met in the UN-sponsored talks in Geneva on December 18 for talks on the proposed Syrian constitutional committee and a following election. The sides agreed to meet early next year.

The sides should still agree on the makeup of the 150-member constitutional committee.

The talks were chaired by the United Nations secretary general’s special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

TEHRAN – Hossein Sheikholeslam, a former Iranian ambassador to Syria, has said that the latest meeting on Syria in Russia’s northern city of Sochi was “promising”.

“The process of the Sochi meeting was promising. Russia, Iran and Turkey, as countries that guarantee peace in Syria, should make efforts to make this conference more comprehensive and closer to the Syrian people’s demands,” he told ISNA in an interview published on Monday.

The latest round of the Sochi meetings was held on January 29 and 30.

Sheikholeslam said during the conference it was decided to reform Syria’s current constitution.

He added there is no alternative for the Sochi and Astana conferences, describing them as the “only effective dialogues” on the seven-year old Syrian crisis.

Commenting on Iran’s policy on the Syria conflict, he said, “We have always stressed that the Syrian people’s demands should be met and other countries are not permitted to decide for the Syrians.”

Iran, Turkey and Russia brokered the Astana dialogue on Syria and the first five rounds of the talks were held on January 23-24, February 15-16, March 14-15, May 3-4 and July 4-5, 2017.

The sixth round of talks were held on September 13-15 and the seventh round in October.

TEHRAN – Adviser to FM Zarif, Hossein Sheikholeslam, said a structure under the name ‘Quds Force’ needs to be added to Islamic countries’ army through parliaments of these states.

In an interview with Tasnim News Agency, Hossein Sheikholeslam, Adviser to Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, touched upon facts underlying Donald Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds and, while pointing to determination of the American government to move ahead with the decision, said “Islamic countries need to form the Quds Force to counter Washington’s move.”

Referring to America’s decision to boost Trump’s power, Sheikholeslam highlighted that “the current US president is a source of US treacheries.” The Iranian official later recalled Alvin Toffler’s prediction on candidacy of Donald Trump and Lee Yves Cho for presidential elections in his book ‘Powershift’ which was published in 1990, asserting “a development must be unfolding behind the scenes which makes these predictions possible.”

Hossein Sheikholeslam, who previously served as director general of the Iranian Parliament’s International Affairs bureau, pointed out the reason for relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to al-Quds explaining “all moves and actions by Trump seem to have been decided on by the American power structure. Yet, given that Trump has sought illegal assistance from a bitter US enemy, Russia, now he relies more heavily on Zionists and has made the recent decision to satisfy the Israeli regime.”

The official stressed the need to confront the decision by the White House adding “selection of Jerusalem as capital of the Zionist regime is a major strategic move while the Islamic world possesses the power to cope with the issue before it is fully realized.”

Adviser to FM Zarif said in light of failure of earlier projects to weaken the Resistance Front, Americans and Zionists created ISIL in recent years to weaken the Resistance, a plot which, thankfully, was thwarted. They later raised the case of referendum on Iraqi Kurdistan which again proved futile, he added. Also with the resignation of Saad Hariri, the Zionists sought to transform Lebanon into a scene of conflict though they did not succeed in their attempt.

“Americans have failed in all their attempts to weaken the Resistance Front and are now pursuing the same malicious plot through relocation of US embassy to Jerusalem,” Sheikholeslam underscored.

The official, while referring to the dwindling power of US, said Palestinians are now on the scene and have declared a new Intifada. “The Islamic world also supports them. The compromise line has now come to a halt and America has lost its position as a mediator,” he added.

At the end of his remarks, Hossein Sheikholeslam enumerated certain venues for tackling Donald Trump’s decision urging that a structure called the Quds Force be added to armies of Islamic countries through their respective parliaments; “these forces must be trained and equipped in Islamic countries and it remains imperative that their formation be announced simultaneously in a bid to drive the Zionist regime out of Palestinian territories which only belongs to Muslims.”
