The packaged heroin is the heaviest of its kind seized over the past 10 years in the province, Gholamreza Jafari, the provincial police commander, was quoted by the report as saying.

Two smugglers were arrested on a trailer transferring the heroin in 723 packages, Jafari added.

Iran holds the record for narcotics confiscation in the world, Eskandar Momeni, the director of anti-narcotics police headquarters said in December 2021.

According to UNODC, Iran remains one of the major transit routes for drug trafficking from Afghanistan to European countries and has had a leading role at the global level in drug-control campaigns.

According to figures released by the United Nations in 2000, Afghanistan produced about 200 tons of narcotics, but in 2018, it has grown to 9,500 tons.

In other words, the production of narcotics has increased fifty times, which has doubled the need for prevention efforts

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, more than 3,800 have been martyred and 12,000 were wounded and disabled in the fight against drug trafficking.

The UNODC has praised Iran’s efforts to fight against narcotics trafficking on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The organization also officially announced that the world’s first place in the discovery of opium, heroin, and morphine belongs to Iran.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday launched the second phase of a major water desalination plant in the country’s southern province of Hormozgan.

The desalination water plant in Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan province, with a capacity of treating 20,000 cubic meters of salt water daily, was launched by the president during a ceremony held via videoconference on Thursday.

The first phase with the same treating capacity came on stream in 2017.

The government has promised to fully run the desalination facility, with a total capacity of 100,000 cubic meters, by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2021).

In early July, Iran’s Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said massive desalination projects located south of the country would be no longer an environmental concern as they would rely on waste heat collected from power plants as their main source of energy.

He said that electricity factories in Iran would provide the energy needed to run major desalination projects along the coast of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Iran, an arid country facing droughts and shortage of water, is working on two major desalination projects to transfer water from southern seas to provinces located in the Iranian Plateau.

Iranian coastguards detain 4 trawlers , 8 foreign nationals in Hormozgan

According To Iran News, Coastguards of southern Hormuzgan province have seized four trawlers and arrested eight foreign nationals on board at Bandar Abbas territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, provincial Judiciary official Ali Salehi said on Thursday.

Ali Salehi said that the vessels were involved in illegal fishing.

Salehi said the arrested people have been handed over to the Judiciary for investigation and adjudication.

He added that 40 tons of fish with a rough value of 60 billion rials ($375,000) were found on the trawlers.

In early September 2019, seven trawlers were detained by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) because of fishing violations.

Iran has launched maritime patrol to keep a tab on fishing trawlers in the Persian Gulf in a bid to prevent such bulk fishing which damages the local people’s source of income.

It closely monitors all movements in its territorial waters, particularly in the Persian Gulf, to protect marine life and at the same time ensure the security of the country’s marine borders. Under Iran’s law, fishing for rare marine creatures carries hefty cash fines.

A fishing trawler is a commercial fishing vessel designed to operate fishing trawls. Trawling is a method of fishing that involves actively dragging or pulling a trawl through the water behind one or more trawlers.

History of the Portuguese Castle of Hormuz Island goes down in time when Commander Afonso de Albuquerque ordered the construction of a fortress in 1507 after his troops captures the island in early 16th century.

Made from reddish stones on a rocky promontory at the north end of the island, the castle was cut off from the rest of the island by a moat, traces of which still remain. The stronghold involves arms depot, water reservoir, barrack, prison, church, command center and central hall.

Muscular-looking walls, chambers and archways as well as sets of rusting cannons in the courtyard still give the area a scenic beauty. A subterranean church featuring vaulted ceilings, a watchtower, and a submerged cistern are amongst other attractions of the site.

In addition, upper levels of fort offers wonderful views of the island, its village, rugged mountains all surrounded by the blue waters of the Persian Gulf.

There are some Portuguese fortresses (commonly called as Portuguese castles by the locals) scattered across the Persian Gulf, including Qeshm Island, Kong Port, Oman, Ras al-Khaimah (UAE), and Chabahar.

Hormuz, which is mostly barren and hilly, is situated some eight kilometers off the coast on the Strait of Hormuz. It remained occupied by the Portuguese from 1514 to 1622 when it was recaptured by joint Anglo-Persian forces.

Under travelers’ eyes

Here is a select of comments that visitors to the island have posted to TripAdvisor, one of the most popular travel websites in the world:

“Awesome Hormuz”

It has been a super stay on Hormuz. Together with a friend who knows all about this island. There are so many beautiful nature and geologic things to see. So many colors right in nature. Also the people here are super nice. An island you must go! (Leo V. from Leeuwarden, the Netherlands; reviewed November 2018)

“Spend a few days on Hormuz Island!”

This last summer I visited Hormuz Island and it was an incredible experience. I have never seen a more magical place! In this review, I will present some tips and a recommendation for room rental in case you want to spend a few days without having to leave back and forward the island.

We already had prepaid accommodation on Qeshm Island so one day we just decided to take the boat early in the morning and visit Hormuz Island for one day. We had done some research, but not much practical information is available online. First of all, it is advised and very typical that tourists visit this island in the autumn/winter/spring time when the temperatures are bearable. Access: you can get to Hormuz Island only by boat from Qeshm Island or from Bandar Abbas as I know… (Silvia M. from Denmark; reviewed October 2018)

“This island is awesome”

The most amazing island in Iran, in my opinion. There are too many places to see and adore the nature of this island. You can reach Hormuz from Qeshm or Bandar Abbas by small cruises, which are not so equipped but they are safe. (SaEdeh H. from Balwyn, Australia; reviewed June 2018)

“A bit of a disappointment”

There is basically very little here. A few information panels and a lot of stones from what was the Portuguese castle. However, close by there are some delightful murals that make the trip worthwhile. (wrightone50 from Austria; reviewed February 2018)

“Too small to be called castle”

It’s a small castle with good maintenance. Considering its size and distance to the residential areas, it would be better to be called as a fort. Better come before sunset as you may enjoy golden ruins with magical call of prayer (adzan). (Iko O. from Jakarta, Indonesia; Reviewed December 2017)

Askarinasab had previously said that the launch of ‘Shiyu Port’ in Parsian city and the minerals terminal in Bandar Lengeh port city, inviting merchants and investors and arranging face-to-face meetings with them, activating new shipping lines, providing port facilities and reducing the time of unloading and loading, are among the measures that have been taken to promote the performance and operation of the ports in southern Hormozgan province.

Bandar Lengeh is located 240 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas and is the main port city of western Hormozgan province.

Kahtouyeh Village is an exemplary tourism site in the Iranian southern province of Hormuzgan.

Since it is a village on rooftops, it is known as ‘Masouleh of the South’. Located 35km off Bastak city, Kahtouyeh lies on the Jenah-Faramarzan Road. It has a population of 1,600 and is situated 300km from Bandar Abbas.

Kahtouyeh means in the heart of mountain since it is surrounded by mountains, hills and valleys.

Based on documents, the village was established 400 years ago. People from nearby villages migrated to Kahtouyeh. Their main occupation was farming and animal husbandry by exploiting the water from nearby spring.

Kahtouyeh people speak in Bastaki dialect which has its roots in Larestani language.

The region also boasts delicious kebabs and local souvenirs.

Since the village has many butcheries selling fresh meat, local people also take interest in cooking.

Its souvenirs include ‘masqati’ ― a kind of sweet made of sugar, starch and aromatic compounds ― and spices which are favorites of customers from Persian Gulf littoral states.

Each year, thousands of tourists visit Hormuzgan Province along the Persian Gulf to enjoy its natural beauties and see parts of ancient Persia.

Bandar Abbas is the capital city of the province, while Bandar Lengeh, Hajiabad, Minab, Qeshm, Jask, Bastak, Bandar Khamir, Parsian, Roudan and Abu Musa are other major cities of Hormuzgan.
