TEHRAN (Iran News) –The International Crane Foundation (ICF) has introduced a young female Siberian crane as the best candidate for companionship with ‘Omid’, the last survivor of the Siberian crane.

After losing his couple Arezoo (meaning Wish in Persian), ‘Omid’ (meaning Hope in Persian) comes every year to the Fereydunknar International Wetland for wintering.

Siberian cranes are monogamous birds, and if the female mate dies for some reason, the male will be left alone forever.

Omid’s annual migration to Iran is very important and attracts many birdwatchers, considering that it is the last survivor of the western Siberian cranes.Omid’s annual trip to Mazandaran is very important for environmental and wildlife lovers and attracts many birdwatchers, considering that it is the last survivor of the western Siberian cranes.

He did not come to Mazandaran for wintering in 2009 and 2015, which caused the concern of environmentalists.

Recently, a young female Siberian crane called ‘Sibe’, who is the best candidate to accompany Omid is introduced to the reproduction center of ICF in Belgium. With the cooperation of Iran’s department of environment, the necessary measures were taken for Sibe to come to Iran, Keramat Hafezi, a member of the Iran Bird Registration Committee said.

A special cage will be placed near Omid’s habitat so that the release can be done slowly and gradually after observing the possible desire of the two birds, he explained.

One of the characteristics of Sibe is that she was raised by parents and had the least contact with humans so that she will not have difficulties in wildlife, he noted.

According to the experts, the only practical action to save Omid is the aforementioned action.

Efforts have been made many times to save the population of the Western Siberian Crane in Iran and these actions were carried out under the supervision of the International Crane Foundation, Hafezi stated.

Some 12 cranes were sent to Iran from the Russian breeding center of Oka with the coordination of ICF; some of which did not migrate, and some did, and even one of them migrated to the western shores of the Caspian Sea, he added.

Critically endangered cranes

According to the International Crane Foundation website, this critically endangered species is now only found in one main population in East Asia, with a few birds remaining in the historic Western/Central population.

The Eastern population breeds in northeastern Siberia and winters at Poyang Lake in the Lower Yangtze River Basin in China. In the Western/Central population, a single crane [Omid] continues to winter along the south coast of the Caspian Sea in Iran. This population is bred just south of the Ob River in Russia.

With a height of 140 centimeters and a weight of 6 kilograms, there are only 3,600 to 4,000 cranes left in the world. The Eastern population is stable, but the Western/Central population is almost extirpated.

Adult cranes have red skin on the forehead, face, and sides of the head, white plumage with black wingtips, and reddish-pink legs while juvenile cranes have a plumage mix of white and cinnamon-brown feathers and tan head.

The oldest documented crane was a Siberian Crane named Wolf, who died at the age of 83. Wolf is in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Habitat loss, especially due to changing hydrology caused by water diversions and conversion of wetlands, illegal take including hunting, trapping and poisoning, pollution, and environmental contamination is threatening this endangered species.

For the 15th year in a row, the last survivor of the Siberian crane, called ‘Omid’ (meaning Hope in Persian), came once again to the Fereydunknar International Wetland on Thursday.

Every year, Omid flies thousands of kilometers alone from Siberia and arrives in Iran for the winter in early November and lives in Fereydunkenar Damgah [structures built-in rice paddies for harvesting wild ducks in autumn and winter by farmers] until mid-March.

The first time, he was accompanied by two other cranes who were shot, leaving a sole traveler from the western Arctic population.

Despite losing his couple Arezoo (meaning Wish in Persian) seven years ago, he comes back to winter in the wetland every year ever since, except for two years during the past 14 years. Locals are very much fond of him and call him Omid believing that he brings hope.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said the most important success of this administration was to revive hope and trust in the people, adding that the president and officials gave the people the feeling that the administration was striving.

Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday morning in a meeting with President Ebrahim Raisi and the members of the cabinet: “In my opinion, the most important success of this administration is to revive hope and trust in the people, the total performance of the government, both the honorable president and the officials in the departments gave people the feeling that the administration is striving, and busy working and serve the people. This action restored people’s hope and confidence to a great extent.”

Referring to the one-year achievements of the administration, the Leader gave important recommendations, including the priority of the economic issue, and added: “The people have been the “main hero of the history of the revolution” in all incidents and events, and this fact is a lesson and shows all officials how to behave with this nation.”

Ayatollah Khamenei called the martyrs Rajaee and Bahonar two top managers of the Islamic Revolution and pointed out that martyrdom was the worthy reward of God for these two dear ones, stating: “Negligence and forgetting great events is a dangerous plague that we should all avoid.”

The Leader termed “the general excitement of the nation during the revolution,” “amaze of arrogance vis-a-vis the greatness of the revolution,” “unceasing enmities of the global bullies,” and “the defenselessness of the country and the capital against Saddam’s air attacks,” “the rampage of terrorists throughout the country and insecurity in the first years of the revolution,” “the performance of various administrations and parliaments after the revolution,” “the decisive presence of the nation in the saga of the sacred defense and other fronts to confront the enemies” and “the unreserved and admirable presence of the people in various rallies and ceremonies” among the issues that their memory should always be alive in the minds of the society.

In this context, Ayatollah Khamenei, recalling the nation’s memorable presence at the funeral of martyred general Qasem Soleimani, added: “Similar issues, including the meaningful and extensive presence of people at the funeral of Ayatollah Naseri in Isfahan and the enthusiastic participation of people at the Ghadir celebration, show the general orientations of the nation and it is the right way to continue.”

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution considered reviewing and propagating the administration’s activities as the second function of Government Week, and pointing to some of the administration’s successes, he made recommendations to the president and the members of the administration.

Ayatollah Khamenei considered revitalizing the hope and trust of the people as the most important success of the administration and added: “People see that the administration is in the scene and is busy working and trying to solve problems and provide services to them, and this fact greatly increases the public’s hope and trust. Of course, these efforts have been successful in some areas, and in some areas, the necessary results have not yet been achieved.”

The Leader called the administration’s provincial trips a bright and important issue and added: “31 trips in the first year of the administration to all over the country including deprived and remote areas, monitoring the works on the scene and deep empathy with the people have been other successes of the administration.”

“The speedy action and presence at the place of natural and unforeseen events as a sign of the administration’s sympathy with the people,” “the removal of negative and controversial rivalries in the relations between the powers that caused confusion in the minds of the people,” “emphasis on the serious care of the three branches of the administration in the continuation of this soothing effort” and “using youth” were among the other successes of the administration that the leader of the revolution addressed.

Ayatollah Khamenei said: “Of course, managers and young officials also make mistakes in some cases, but in general, using young managers and officials in the administration and parliament and nurturing strong managers is worth being patient in the face of these mistakes and gradually eliminating them.”

He called “taking the society out of waiting for others’ decisions and actions,” “avoiding conditioning the country,” and “giving importance to internal capacities” other successes of the executive branch.

The Leader considered the Raisi administration “accountable” and said: “In the last year, the administration neither made excuses nor said “we don’t have the authority” or “others don’t allow us to work.”

“Good approaches in the field of foreign policy and culture” and “highlighting the slogans of the revolution, including seeking justice, supporting the oppressed, avoiding aristocracy and anti-arrogance” were other prominent points of the administration that the leader of the revolution pointed to.

Emphasizing that in the current situation, the main priority is still the economic issues, the Leader noted: “Of course, this does not mean ignoring other topics such as science, security, social damage and culture, but the priority should be economy along with cultural attachment.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – At a low-key ceremony to mark the unveiling of the Olympic flame display on Monday, Tokyo officials reiterated that next year’s Games will be a symbol of hope for the world as it recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.

The flame will be on show from today until November 1 at the Japanese Olympic Museum, located next to the National Stadium purpose-built for the Games which were due to take place this year but were rescheduled for 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Reuters reported.

The flame was last seen in Fukushima after the torch relay was canceled following its arrival from Greece but before it could start a planned tour of Japan following the decision to postpone the Games in March.

“Next year, this flame will be carried by about 10,000 torchbearers and will light the Olympic cauldron,” Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori said.

“We would like to make efforts toward this so that we can ensure a great success of the Games.”

Organizers have not announced details of the torch relay. The original 121-day plan had the torch traveling to all of Japan’s 47 prefectures.

“I suppose athletes aiming to participate in Olympics and Paralympics are training hard every day while having great anxiety (due to coronavirus),” said Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) president Yasuhiro Yamashita who received the flame from Mori.

“I am confident that this flame, which is displayed today, will be moral support for such athletes.”

To limit crowds gathering to view the flame, there will be a reservation system with a designated date and time.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Monday that the Hormuz Peace Endeavor, aka HOPE, initiatives done by Iran has been welcomed by several countries in the region.

However, he said that there are three countries in the region which are not seeking peace and they feel that if they pretend to be threatened in the region, they can open the door to the US presence, according to IRNA.

The Iranian foreign minister said some regional states believe that they can buy security.

“I think the United States has shown them that it has no obligation to their security, and it only wants their money,” he said.

Zarif added that the Iranian initiative is comprised of six countries of [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council plus Iran, Iraq and Yemen.

The HOPE initiatives in the region was proposed by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani at the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly last year.

In an address to the 74th session of the UN General Assembly in September 25, President Rouhani said as a steward of maritime security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, Iran invites all countries that are affected by developments in the strategic region to join the Hormuz Peace Endeavor.

The initiative aims to promote peace, stability, progress and prosperity for littoral states and to help achieve mutual understanding and establish peaceful and friendly relations among the neighbors, he said.

Iran introduced the HOPE plan after several oil tankers were targeted in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman last year.

The US and its ally Saudi Arabia quickly blamed Iran for the attacks.

Tehran rejected the accusations and said the incidents appear to be false flags meant to frame the Islamic Republic.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Tehran is scheduled to host an international conference on the country’s peace initiative known as ‘Hormuz Peace Endeavor, HOPE, in January.

The Tehran International Conference on Hope, due to held in the capital on Monday and Tuesday, January 6 and 7, will discuss the HOPE initiative as well as the latest developments in the Persian Gulf.

The main sessions of this forum include public meetings and specialized round-table talks on Tuesday, January 7 from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm (local time).

The international event will be attended by domestic political officials, senior officials from regional countries, thinkers, heads of research institutes and national and international experts.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani presented the HOPE initiative while delivering a speech at the UN General Assembly 2019 and invited all regional countries to participate in it.

“The initiative is based on the fact that all regional countries are duty-bound to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region. Together with the international community, they have common interests in maintaining freedom of navigation and energy transfer,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said about the initiative at a UN Security Council meeting on September 25.

These regional efforts are necessary to prevent war, conflict, violence, extremism, terrorism and sectarian tensions, Zarif said at the time, adding that Tehran’s proposal was aimed at enhancing solidarity, mutual understanding as well as peaceful and friendly relations between countries in the region in order to guarantee the territorial integrity and political independence of regional states.

“Iran’s message for the region and neighbors, especially to the Muslim ones, has always been friendly and brotherly relations,” Nezami told IRNA in Moscow.

Pointing to Iran’s Hormuz peace initiative, known as HOPE, he said that the regional countries’ positive response to the peace plan will help the restoration of stability to the region.

At the United Nations summit in New York in late September, Iran officially unveiled the proposal for regional security. The proposal is officially called the Hormuz Peace Endeavor (HOPE).

Foreign Minister Zarif has invited all regional states to join the peace plan for securing the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The managing director of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization, has said that the Iranian delegation plans to put forward the HOPE initiative at the International Maritime Organization, IMO summit in London.

In an interview with the IRIB on Monday, Mohammad Rastad said that security in the region must be maintained by the regional countries.

Rastad also said, “The Iranian delegation will stress that the United States, as a member state to the International Maritime Organization, has created limitations for Iran through sanctions and has threatened other countries to cut cooperation with Iran.”

The behavior of the U.S. is against the IMO convention, he lamented.

The summit was scheduled to open on November 25 and end on December 4 in London.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi announced on Monday that three countries have accepted to join Iran’s Hormuz peace initiative.

“Three countries have given written response to Iran’s invitation and other countries are studying it,” Mousavi told a regular press briefing.

He did not name the countries.

At the United Nations summit in New York in late September, Iran officially unveiled a proposal for regional security, officially called the Hormuz Peace Endeavour (HOPE).

“Based upon the historical responsibility of my country in maintaining security, peace, stability and progress in the Persian Gulf region and Strait of Hormuz, I would like to invite all the countries directly affected by the developments in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz to the ‘Coalition for Hope’, meaning Hormuz Peace Endeavor,” President Hassan Rouhani told the UN delegates.

Foreign Minister Zarif has invited all regional states to join Iran’s initiative for securing the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

In a tweet in September, Zarif said the initiative entails “dialogue, confidence-building, freedom of navigation, energy security, non-aggression, and non-intervention”.

In a post on his Twitter account on October 15, Zarif renewed Iran’s call to all countries bordering the Persian Gulf to join Tehran’s initiative to “forge a blueprint for peace, security, stability, and prosperity” in the region.

In his press briefing, the Foreign Ministry spokesman called on certain Persian Gulf Arab states to abandon reliance on foreign forces for their security, saying dependence on foreigners is just an “illusion”

“We called on the countries to respond to Iran’s peace-seeking call and abandon illusions. We have stressed that presence of foreign countries undermines security and stability. We hope this initiative of Iran would face with positive response in IMO summit,” Mousavi stated.

TEHRAN (Iran News)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said on Sunday that the feedbacks from HOPE sent to all beneficiaries in the region, including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, took positive responses back.

The Hormuz Peace Endeavor, or HOPE initiative, which was first proposed at the UN General Assembly in New York by President Hassan Rouhani, has been sent in full details to all beneficiary countries, including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and we have received good reactions, Mousavi said this morning in Tehran, during his weekly presser.

After taking positive feedbacks from HOPE, the diplomat added that there will be no further details disclosed, reassuring that further examinations are underway inside the country.

He further voiced hope that the “benevolent step of the Islamic Republic of Iran will be welcomed by these countries to have a safe region” in the future.

On Saturday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi touched upon HOPE initiative and said that Tehran believes in collective security and security for all.

Last Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif again invited all littoral states of the Persian Gulf to join Tehran’s peace initiative, reiterating his country’s wiliness to broaden relations with Southern neighboring countries to promote regional peace and prosperity.

Speaking to Aljazeera while in Qatar to attend the 2019 Munich Security Conference (MSC) in Doha, Zarif once again invited the regional countries to join the Iran peace initiative, dubbed as Hormuz Peace Endeavor (HOPE), as outlined by the President Rouhani at the UN General Assembly meeting.

The top Iranian diplomat also warned the United States that a war would benefit no one while underlining that the US President Donald Trump cannot impose a unilateral agreement on Iran.

In relevant remarks in September, Zarif had underlined that the Hormuz Peace Endeavor (HOPE) floated by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at the UN was vital to prevent war and terrorism in the region.

Zarif made the remarks, addressing a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on “UN Cooperation with Regional Organizations” in New York late in September.

He urged the countries in the region to join the HOPE initiative which is designed to include all countries of the region and aims to expand cooperation beyond regional security.

“The Initiative is based on the fact that all regional states are duty-bound to ensure peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. They along with the global community have common interests in maintaining freedom of navigation and transfer of energy,” Zarif said.

The Iranian diplomat stressed that regional cooperation is the key to preventing war, violence, extremism, terrorism and sectarian tensions.

Commenting on objectives of Hormuz peace initiative, he said that promoting solidarity, mutual understanding and peaceful and friendly relations and cooperation among regional states as well as boosting collaboration in uprooting terrorism, extremism and sectarian tensions and making sure about energy security, freedom of shipping and free flow of oil were among the objectives of the initiative.

Zarif went on to say that regional cooperation was necessary for fighting terrorism, particularly in areas such as the Middle East and Afghanistan where terrorist groups are more active than any other places.

Addressing the UNGA late last month, President Rouhani unveiled Iran’s new initiative for the establishment of peace and security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and said, ” The goal of the Coalition for Hope is to promote peace, stability, progress, and welfare for all the residents of the Strait of Hormuz region, and to enhance mutual understanding and peaceful and friendly relations amongst them.”

“This initiative includes various venues for cooperation, such as the collective supply of energy security, freedom of navigation and free transfer of oil and other resources to and from the Strait of Hormuz and beyond,” he added.

“The Coalition for Hope is based on important principles such as compliance with the goals and principles of the United Nations, mutual respect, equal footing, dialog and understanding, respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, inviolability of international borders, the peaceful settlement of all disputes, and more importantly, the two fundamental principles of non-aggression and non-interference in the domestic affairs of each other. The presence of the United Nations is necessary for the creation of an international umbrella in support of the Coalition for Hope,” President Rouhani underlined.
