Speaking at a Saturday session of the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, President Rouhani stressed the need to intensify health precautionary measures against COVID-19 pandemic.

Pointing to reports of cases of a pneumonia-like disease in a number of neighboring countries that is more dangerous than COVID-19, the president said it is necessary to take intensified precautionary measures as the disease may spread to Iran as autumn is coming.

Rouhani also asked the Iranian people not to become bored with the health restrictions and social distancing protocol and to get used to the new lifestyle in the medium and long term.

The new lifestyle under the shadow of coronavirus pandemic may continue even after a vaccine becomes available, the president noted.

The president has repeatedly hailed his administration’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak and the sanctions, saying Iran is struggling against two viruses at the same time.

Rouhani said in July that not only have the enemies failed to achieve the objective of causing economic collapse in Iran, but the administration has supplied all necessary commodities and accelerated domestic production.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Sunday that the average observing health protocols in the country has been declining in recent weeks.

Speaking at a daily press conference on Sunday, Lari added the use of masks by employees in industrial centers and government offices has increased, but in public transport has decreased, according to IRNA.

She called on people to further observe the health protocols in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country.

Lari added that 88 counties in the country are classified as “red”, the highest level on Iran’s color-coded risk scale.

She underlined that no city in the country is free of the disease.

It has opted for a color-coded system of white for low-risk parts of the country, yellow for medium-risk and red for high-risk areas.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Iran rose by 2,089 to 402,029, Lari said, as the country reported 128 new deaths from Saturday to Sunday.

The ministry’s spokeswoman said the official death toll stood at 23,157 in Iran, the worst-hit countries in the West Asia.

Of the new cases detected since Saturday, 956 patients have been admitted to the hospital, she added.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 3,791 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions, Lari noted.

At least 346,242 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran, the spokeswoman said.

Lari also noted that nearly 3,560,000 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

Iran is contending with the deadliest pandemic the world has seen in many decades amid US sanctions, which have seriously hampered efforts to contain the outbreak.

On Sunday, President Hassan Rouhani condemned US sanctions which have obstructed Iran’s access to medicines amid the coronavirus pandemic, saying the White House knows nothing about humanity.

Rouhani slammed Washington for blocking a request by the Iranian government for a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to combat the deadly outbreak, Press TV reported.

“We requested a $5 billion loan from the IMF and all members agreed, but America does not allow us to get the loan for medicines and treatment,” he said.

“They have distanced from humanity as far as this. The White House today has no sense of humanity. If it had a sense of humanity, it wouldn’t have done this,” he added.

The president also criticized “friendly countries” that have frozen Iran’s money in their banks.

“We have countries that are also our friends and our money is in their banks, [but] they have locked it three times and are not willing to release our money for our needs. They say that the Americans have pressured” them against unfreezing Iran’s money and that they had retreated in the face of the US oppression, Rouhani said.

Such a crime is unprecedented in history, with a country not being able to draw off its money deposited in a bank in a bid to cover its people’s health needs, he underlined.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Millions of Iranians are holding nationwide rituals to commemorate Ashura, a day of mourning for the martyrdom of the third Imam of Shiite Muslims, Hussein ibn Ali (AS).

Massive crowds of mourners took to the streets in Iran to pay tribute to Imam Hussein (AS), who devoted his life to Islam in a battle in Karbala in 680 AD.

Men, women and children, dressed in black, have been holding mourning ceremonies since ten days ago to mark the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), and his uprising for justice.

Each year, the mourning rituals start with the Islamic lunar month of Muharram and reach their climax on the tenth day of the month, known as Ashura.

In Iran, as marking Ashura and Tasoua, people traditionally cooks votive food (called Nazri) and distribute it among their neighbors, family and poor people. Free food is also offered to people who perform the mourning rites.

This year, however, mourning ceremonies are different as large gatherings have been banned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In Iran, people are taking part in outdoor events while observing social distancing rules imposed to help slow the virus spread.

Similar mourning ceremonies are being held in other Shiite communities across the world, including in Iraq, Lebanon and Bahrain.

In a bid to avoid virus transmission, Iraq’s Higher Committee for Health and Public Safety decided not to allow foreign pilgrims to enter the country and imposed a travel ban in its provinces.

The third Shiite Imam, along with 72 of his companions, was martyred in a battle against the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid ibn Muawiyah, in the Iraqi region of Karbala, after he refused to pledge allegiance to the ruling tyrant.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Health Ministry said on Friday a series of restrictions will be reintroduced as of Saturday in Tehran for a week amid a resurgence of coronavirus infections.

A senior Health Ministry official in Tehran, Mohsen Farhadi told IRNA that the new restrictions target four types of businesses and are aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Farhadi said wedding and conference halls are banned from holding ceremonies and gatherings, and gyms where sports such as wrestling, judo, taekwondo, and the like, where high physical contact between athletes is practiced, must shut down.

He added that coffee shops and tea houses, as well as aqua parks, amusement parks, and zoos will remain closed during this period.

Iran has been battling a resurgence of COVID-19, with official figures showing a rise in both new infections and deaths since a two-month low in May.

The Health Ministry on Friday raised the overall virus toll to more than 13,790 deaths, with 183 new fatalities, and over 269,400 confirmed cases.

Iran has refrained from imposing a full lockdown but closed schools and canceled public gatherings. It banned travel between provinces in March but lifted the order the following month.

The rising toll has prompted authorities to make masks mandatory in enclosed public spaces and allow worst-hit provinces to reimpose restrictions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Tests on hamsters reveal the widespread use of face masks reduces transmission of the deadly coronavirus, a team of leading experts in Hong Kong said.

The research by the University of Hong Kong is some of the first to specifically investigate whether masks can stop symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers from infecting others.

Led by Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, one of the world’s top coronavirus experts, the team placed hamsters that were artificially infected with the disease next to healthy animals.

Surgical masks were placed between the two cages with airflow traveling from the infected animals to the healthy ones.

The researchers found non-contact transmission of the virus could be reduced by more than 60 percent when the masks were used.

Two thirds of the healthy hamsters were infected within a week if no masks were applied.

The infection rate plunged to just over 15 percent when surgical masks were put on the cage of the infected animals and by about 35 percent when placed on the cage with the healthy hamsters.

Those that did become infected were also found to have less of the virus within their bodies than those infected without a mask.

“It’s very clear that the effect of masking the infected, especially when they are asymptomatic — or symptomatic — it’s much more important than anything else,” Yuen told reporters.

“It also explained why universal masking is important because we now have known that a large number of those infected have no symptom.”

Yuen was one of the microbiologists who discovered the SARS virus — a predecessor of the current coronavirus — when it emerged in 2003, killing some 300 people in Hong Kong.

Armed with knowledge from that fight, he advised Hong Kongers early in the current pandemic to adopt universal masking, something embraced by the city’s residents.

At the time the World Health Organisation and many other foreign health authorities dismissed using masks widely among the public, saying they should instead go to frontline medical workers.

Four months after its first COVID-19 case was detected, Hong Kong has largely managed to contain the disease with just over 1,000 infections and four deaths.

Experts have credited widespread mask use as well as efficient testing, tracing and treatment in the city of 7.5 million for the relatively low numbers.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said Saturday that Iran will hold Quds Day rallies and Eid al-Fitr prayers in compliance with health protocols set to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.

Addressing the National Headquarters for Managing and Fighting the Coronavirus in Tehran, Rouhani said that Eid al-Fitr prayers, which mark the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, will be held in religious centers across the country, Press TV reported.

He added, however, that the prayers will only take place in local religious centers as opposed to major prayer grounds where worshippers usually convene in each city to mark the event.

The president said that Quds Day will also be commemorated in “white” regions where the coronavirus has not deemed a threat.

He added that Quds Day will be organized without its usual annual rallies and will instead be held within the perimeters of Friday prayers, with health protocols set by health ministry.

Rouhani exempted the capital Tehran from the plan, where a drive-in march will be staged to honor the Quds Day event.

“It will be a symbolic measure using vehicles and it will be organized by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC),” he said.

As a legacy of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini, Quds Day has been designated on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan to mark worldwide Muslim solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

The event was commemorated every year with major rallies across Iran and beyond.
