TEHRAN (Iran News) – A majority of Americans disapprove of President Joe Biden’s immigration policies and handling of the US-Mexico border crisis, and people think reuniting the migrant children and parents separated at the border should be the federal government’s highest priority.

According to an AP-NORC poll, 56 percent of people disapprove of Biden’s stance on immigration, with 55 percent disapproving on the current border situation—the two worst readings of the issues included, Newsweek reported.

Biden also had negative approval ratings on the issues of gun policy and the federal budget deficit.

But his overall job approval rating was net positive, with 61 percent approving versus 38 percent disapproving of his presidency so far.

The survey comes as Republican lawmakers condemn Biden for his handling of the border, accusing him of encouraging the surge. The number of migrants crossing the US-Mexico border has hit its highest level for several years.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also sent a letter to Biden in late March demanding answers to the “humanitarian crisis” at the border.

Biden has expressed his desire for a more humane approach to dealing with the surge in border crossings, contrasting himself to predecessor Donald Trump, whose separation policy saw thousands of migrant children split from their parents and held in large cages.

However, the Biden Administration has also faced bipartisan criticism after images and videos emerged last month showing migrant children in crowded conditions while under Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody at a facility in Texas.

According to the latest approval poll, 40 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Biden is handling the crisis involving unaccompanied children apprehended at the US-Mexico border, compared with just 24 percent who approve.

A further 35 percent said they neither approve or disapprove of Biden’s handling of children who reach the border without their parents.

The poll also reveals that 65 percent of respondents consider reuniting parents and children who were separated at the border to be a high priority for the government, with a further 26 percent considering it a moderate priority, making it the top issue.

The other top high priorities, according to the poll results, are providing safe treatment of unaccompanied minors at the border (59 percent) and increasing security at the US-Mexico border (53 percent).

The poll notes that while about three-quarters (74 percent) of Democrats approve of Biden’s handling of immigration and border security, they are the lowest-ranked of all the issues included in the survey, along with gun policy.

Just like the border and immigration issues, more than half of Americans overall (52 percent) disapprove of Biden’s gun policies.

The president vowed in March to take “common-sense steps” and renewed his calls to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in the wake of the mass shootings in Atlanta, Georgia, and Boulder, Colorado, during the first three months of his presidency.

Biden’s firearm policies were met with major disapproval from Republicans (82 percent), compared to the 74 percent of Democrats who approve.

Overall, Biden is still polling well on job approval, with almost unanimous (96 percent) backing from Democrat voters. Over a fifth (22 percent) of Republicans also approved of the way he is handling the presidency.

Biden is buoyed by majority approval of 73 percent for his response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a 60 percent approval rating for his handling of the economy—an area of which Trump had enjoyed significant support from voters during his time as president.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Three people were injured and a suspect was in custody after a shooting Wednesday evening in a shopping and entertainment complex in a Phoenix suburb in the US state of Arizona, police said.

One of the three victims in the Glendale, Arizona, shooting was in critical condition, Officer Tiffany Ngalula said. The other two were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, she said.

When officers arrived on the northern edge of the Westgate Entertainment District shortly after 7:25 p.m. there was no longer active gunfire, Ngalula said.

“Our officers challenged that suspect and were able to safely take that person into custody,” she said. The shooter was unharmed, NBC News reported.

Neighbors and people at the outdoor complex were told to shelter in place as a precautionary search of the area was underway Thursday night, Ngalula said.

Some residents were getting reverse 911 calls advising them to stay inside, she said.

Lights were out in the area at the same time, Ngalula aid. It’s not clear if the outage was related.

The officer asked members of the public who might have recorded videos of the violence or discovered a social media video of a possible suspect to help detectives investigating the attack.

“Any information would be part of the evidence at this time,” Ngalula said.

State Sen. Martin Quezada, D-Phoenix, said on Twitter that he had seen the attack.

“I just witnessed an armed terrorist with an AR-15 shoot up Westgate,” he wrote.

The Westgate Entertainment District includes shops, a theater, and restaurants just north of State Farm Stadium, where the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals play.

The district announced new restaurant hours on May 14 after the state allowed eateries to reopen with new safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Students who survived the Florida shooting prepared to flood the Capitol Wednesday pushing to ban the assault style rifle used to kill 17 people, vowing to make changes in the November election if they can’t persuade lawmakers to change laws before their legislative session ends.

About 100 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students arrived at a Tallahassee high school to extended applause late Tuesday after a 400-mile (640-kilometer) trip on three buses. They told the 500 students and parents waiting for them that they are fighting to protect all students, AP reported.

“We’re what’s making the change. We’re going to talk to these politicians tomorrow. We’re going to talk to them the day after that. We’re going to keep talking, we’re going to keep pushing until something is done because people are dying and this can’t happen anymore,” said Alfonso Calderon, a 16-year-old junior. “You guys are what we’re trying to protect.”

Despite their enthusiasm and determination, the students and their supporters aren’t likely to get what they really want: a ban on AR-15s and similar semi-automatic rifles. Republican lawmakers are talking more seriously about some restrictions, but not a total ban.

Instead, they’re discussing treating assault-style rifles like the one suspected gunman Nikolas Cruz is accused of using in the Valentine’s Day attack more like handguns than long guns. That could mean raising the minimum age to purchase the weapon to 21, creating a waiting period and making it more difficult for people who exhibit signs of mental illness from buying the weapon even without a diagnosis.

Democrats attempted to get a bill to ban assault rifles and large-capacity magazines heard on the House floor on Tuesday. Republicans, who dominate the chamber, easily shot it down. Students who were at the Capitol ahead of their classmates who arrived late Tuesday found Republicans steered the conversation away from gun restrictions.

Rachel Catania, 15, a sophomore at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland said she got a lot of non-answers from the politicians she spoke with Tuesday.

“I know it’s going to be hard, but I know we can do it,” she said. “We’re not going to be the school that got shot, we’re going to be the school that got shot and made something happen. A change is going to happen.”

The students on the seven-hour bus ride checked their phones, watching videos and reading comments on social media about the shooting, some of which accused them of being liberal pawns.

As the grieving Florida students demanded action on guns, President Donald Trump on Tuesday directed the Justice Department to move to ban devices like the rapid-fire bump stocks used in last year’s Las Vegas massacre. It was a small sign of movement on the gun violence issue that has long tied Washington in knots.

“We must do more to protect our children,” said Trump, a strong and vocal supporter of gun rights. He added that his administration was working hard to respond to the Florida rampage.

The students planned to hold a rally Wednesday to put more pressure on the Legislature.

“I really think they are going to hear us out,” said Chris Grady, a high school senior aboard the bus.

The Feb. 14 attack initially appeared to overcome the resistance of some in the state’s political leadership, which has rebuffed gun restrictions since Republicans took control of both the governor’s office and the Legislature in 1999. However, many members of the party still have strong resistance to any gun-control measures.

The Parkland students also plan to meet Wednesday with top legislative leaders, including House Speaker Richard Corcoran and Senate President Joe Negron.

Florida has a reputation for expanding gun rights. Negron sponsored a 2011 bill that Republican Gov. Rick Scott signed into law that banned cities and counties from regulating gun and ammunition sales.

Scott organized three committees to look at school safety, mental health and gun safety issues that met Tuesday and vowed to make changes to better protect students. While Scott told reporters several times that “everything is on the table,” he did not answer whether his proposal would include any bans on any type of weapons.

Instead, Scott said he is interested in making it harder for people who are temporarily committed to obtain a gun. He also pledged to increase spending on school safety programs and on mental health treatment.

Authorities said Cruz, 19, had a string of run-ins with school authorities that ended with his expulsion. Police were repeatedly called to his house throughout his childhood. His lawyers said there were many warning signs that he was mentally unstable and potentially violent. Yet he legally purchased a semi-automatic rifle.

Stoneman Douglas senior Diego Pfeiffer was realistic about what change would happen before the Legislature goes home March 9, but said anything is a good first step.

“The best case scenario is we move a step forward and that’s all we’re asking here. We’re asking to help save student lives,” he said. “Whether it’s funding or mental health or gun safety or any of that sort of stuff – I am pro any of that.”

But he also said if change doesn’t come in the Legislature, he noted he’s now 18 and he has the power of his vote.

“You’re our senators and you’re our representatives for now. If you don’t help us make a change soon, you will be left in the dust,” he said. “I’m happily going to vote for anybody who’s going to be on our side, the side of children’s lives. How can you say no to that?”

TEHRAN – Children who watched a PG- (Parental Guidance-) rated movie clip containing guns played with a disabled real gun longer and pulled the trigger more often than children who saw the same movie not containing guns, researchers found.

Many US households with guns do not secure the weapons, and children in the United States are more likely to die by unintentional gun shootings than children in other developed countries.

An experiment by researchers of Ohio State University focused on movie characters with guns. The experiment included 104 children (52 pairs of siblings, cousins, step-siblings or friends) between the ages of 8 and 12. Each pair was randomly selected to watch a 20-minute edited version of the PG-rated films “The Rocketeer” or “National Treasure” that did or did not contain guns. Scenes in the movies showing guns were edited out for the no-gun version but the action and narrative of the film were not altered.

After watching the movie, the children were taken to a different room with a cabinet full of toys and they were told they could play with any of the toys and games in the room. One drawer of the cabinet contained a real 0.38-caliber handgun that had been modified so it could not fire, although the gun’s hammer and trigger were still functional. The children had 20 minutes to play in the room together with the door closed.

Of the 52 pairs of children, 43 pairs (82.7 percent) found the gun in the cabinet drawer; 14 pairs (26.9 percent) gave the gun to a research assistant or told them about it; and 22 pairs (42.3 percent) had one or both children handle the gun. The type of movie clip (containing guns or not containing guns) did not influence whether children found the gun or handled it, according to the results.

However, the median number of trigger pulls among children who saw the movie containing guns was 2.8 trigger pulls compared with 0.01 trigger pulls among children who saw the movie not containing guns. Also, the median number of seconds spent holding the gun among children who saw a movie containing guns was 53.1 seconds compared with 11.1 seconds among children who saw the movie not containing guns, according to the results.

Analyses suggest children who saw the movie containing guns also played more aggressively and sometimes fired the gun at people.

“The present experiment aimed to understand the connection between exposure to gun violence in the media and interest in and playing with guns in the real world. We believe that these data are a compelling start to the conversation on the various factors that can increase children’s interest in guns and violence,” the article concluded.

Materials of the study were provided by The JAMA Network Journals.
