TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iran registered “huge volumes” of gas swap in the previous Iranian calendar year of 1401 (ended March 20, 2023), showing a 358 percent hike as compared to the last year’s corresponding period, the chief executive of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) said.

Speaking in an interview with Fars News Agency on Saturday, Majid Chegeni stated that Iran’s gas export volume also showed a 10 percent rise in the previous year.

The deputy oil minister pointed to the performance of his company in the field of natural gas trade and added that the export of natural gas registered a 10 and 79 percent growth in 2022 in terms of volume and value respectively as compared to a year earlier.

The amount of swapped gas has registered a 358 and 530 percent hike in 2022 in terms of volume and value respectively as compared to the same period of last year, Chegeni highlighted.

The NIGC imported natural gas from Turkmenistan under a swap deal inked with SOCAR Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2022, he said, adding, “While increasing natural gas trade with Turkmenistan, the NIGC succeeded in restoring gas import from Turkmenistan into the country.

This huge volume of natural is swapped from Turkmenistan to the Republic of Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan, he noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the deputy oil minister referred to the export of byproducts of natural gas and noted that Iran’s export of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) registered a 32 and 57 percent hike in terms of volume and value respectively as compared to 2021.

It is expected that the volume of gas imported from Turkmenistan under the gas swap deal inked with SOCAR Company would increase more than 70 percent in 2023 as compared to a year earlier, the NIGC chief highlighted.

Back in November 2022, an Oilprice.com report stated that Iran has been ramping up its natural gas production with the aim of increasing exports to global markets as the demand in Europe for natural gas is surging ahead of winter.

“Iran last week made it clear that it is ramping up its gas production operations at the supergiant South Pars natural gas field, with a focus on its controversial Phase 11,” the report read.

South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf water, is divided into 24 standard phases of development in the first stage. Most of the phases are fully operational at the moment.

The huge offshore field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, called North Dome, are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani highlighted Iran’s major progress in the water treatment and energy sector, saying the administration takes pride in launching new projects while the country is under the pressure of the US sanctions and the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

Addressing a ceremony, held on Thursday via videoconference to open 10 infrastructural and development projects in the water and electricity industries in the provinces of Fars and Kermanshah, Rouhani said his administration has brought 37 water treatment facilities into operation over the past seven years.

He said the Islamic Republic takes pride in making progress in the energy sector while it is under the pressure of sanctions, is fighting against the coronavirus pandemic, and is dealing with the situation when “a tyrant and superpower like the US is mounting pressures, threats, and sanctions” constantly.

The people of Iran may rest assured that the administration is fully ready to serve the nation and reduce the problems despite the pressures and sanctions, Rouhani underlined.

Paying tribute to the Energy Ministry and the private sector for a great job of opening water and electricity projects across the country, he said 99.9 percent of people in the cities and more than 82 percent of the population in the villages enjoy healthy running water at present.

This is a glory for the Islamic Republic that the administration has been inaugurating a dam every two months in average, a sewage treatment plant every month, and a municipal water treatment plant every 50 days, the president added.

Before ordering the official opening of six solar power plants in the southern province of Fars, Rouhani said solar power plants could be a very suitable option for the generation of electricity given the climatic conditions of Iran, considering that they generate clean power, without pollution, and without the need for water consumption.

“This is very important that we have moved forward from the kilowatt (scales) to the megawatts in solar power plants.”

Rouhani further proposed the idea of promotion of rooftop solar systems across Iran, saying development of the solar technologies would enable everybody to turn the roof of their house into a solar power plant, to use the electricity they require, and to sell the excess to the government.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) announced on Saturday that the country’s non-oil economic growth, without taking oil production into account, in the last Iranian calendar (ended on March 20, 2020) stood at a positive domain.

As Abdolnaser Hemmati announced on Instagram, official reports register a positive rate for Iran’s non-oil economic growth in the last Iranian year 1398.

“In the said period, economic growth rate stood at +1.1% with +8.8% growth in agricultural sector, +2.3% growth in industrial and mining sector, and -0.2% decrease in the services sector,” Hemmati wrote.

He described the negative growth rate of the services sector as an inevitable impact of the coronavirus outbreak in the last two months of the preceding year.

Hemmati added that due to the sharp drop in Iran’s oil revenues in the year before, oil income shrank -38.7%, pulling down Iran’s economic growth to -6.5% in 1398.

The senior Iranian banker added that the Central Bank of Iran will release further detail about Iran’s economic proceedings and achievements in the last year within the upcoming days.

In mid-February, Hemmati announced that Iran’s economy is getting out of recession, while major economic indices are experiencing stability.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is organizing a two-week (19 February – 2 March 2018) special training course in Brazil for the top Iranian experts in the field of agriculture to improve the existing national knowledge on oilseed production and strengthen its capacity in the country.

“This training course would enable the Iranian scientists to ‘shadow’ experienced Brazilian counterparts in Brazil, and gain hands-on learning opportunities besides enabling them to discuss and understand the applications of innovations in their area of subject matter discipline” said Rao Matta, FAO Representative ad interim to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

By underscoring the knowledge and technology owned by Brazilian research institutions and agencies, namely Foundation For Research And Development Support of Brazil (FAPED) as well as Embrapa (The Soybean Research Center of Brazil), which can enhance the Iranian know-how on soybean production and encourage the national scientists to gain expertise in applied research for development, Matta said that FAO’s ultimate objective of this training program is to accelerate soybean production in the country and assist Iran to become one of the leading soybean producers in the region.

Currently FAO is implementing a Technical Cooperation Project (TCP) in the country entitled “Building Capacity toward Sustainable Intensification of Oilseed Crops in Iran, addressing the Soybean Value Chain” that aims to catalyze a national effort to build public and private sector capacity to harness and tune innovations in sustainable oilseed crop production and its utilization along each value chain, while integrating the new technologies into cereal-based systems.

According to a press release published by the FAO Representation in Iran, the Organization’s project also supports ‘institutional innovations’ by fostering multi-stakeholder alliances through a new steering committee that includes professionals from major oilseed crops with particular emphasis on soybean. Similarly, it will facilitate the creation of an Advisory Board/Council for the oilseed crop sub-sector, including participation of one or more international experts to ensure strategic alliances with research and development institutions outside of Iran.

As Iran imports approximately 95% of its vegetable oil and protein cake, throughout the project, FAO eases strategic mentoring and access to the new genetic resources via a partnership with Embrapa that will bring short- and long-term benefits to the country and considered as a ‘jump-starting’ of the national capacities in oil seed production.
