Speaking to ILNA, Mohammad Reza Modarres Khiabani said that the shipping lines have not received any subsidies from the government but it has improved the condition for transportation of goods despite sanctions.

He went on to say that he is not aware about giving subsidies for operation in the northern ports and said that IRISL is active as the leader of the national marine transportation and other shipping lines are also active in the country and IRISL only accounts for 35% of the shipping market in northern country and other transportation companies have more shares of the market.

Modarres Khiabani reiterated that IRISL has not been paid any subsidy by the government and it has also suffered a lot due to the sanctions problem and the final cost of the shipping services which has been higher than the global prices but since IRISL is obliged to offer competitive rates, it is now active as the leader of transportation in the market.

On completing the IRISL fleet through using the domestic capabilities and capacities, he said that the contract for general cargo ships have been signed and the process for their manufacture has started and it has progressed 20%, adding that the engineering design for ro-ro vessels has completed and the operation for building ro-ro ships has started and in two years the domestic ro-ro will be handed over to IRISL.

On the possible presence of this company in the tender call for operating Chabahar Port, Modarres Khiabani said that the regular line for Chabahar Port-India route has been launched and there is at least one ship is dispatched on this route per week.

He reiterated that last year despite the pandemic, IRISL set a record for transportation of goods, adding that last year the company transported 27m tons of goods and set a new record and in the first quarter of the current year, the company saw 20% growth in transportation of goods.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – 42m tons of goods loaded, unloaded at ports in 3 months. Some 42 million tons of commodities have been loaded and unloaded at Iranian ports in the three-month period since the new government administration took office in August, IRNA reported.

According to a report by the Transport and Urban Development Ministry, 28 million tons of the mentioned commodities were non-oil goods and the rest were oil-related products.

Also, 507,000 TEUs of container cargoes were unloaded and loaded at the country’s commercial ports during the mentioned three months, while, 11 million tons of non-oil exports, transiting over 62.1 million tons of non-oil goods, and the transshipment of 990,000 tons of non-oil commodities were also carried out by the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) as one of the organizations under the Ministry of Transport and Urban Development during this period.

Meanwhile, as previously reported, loading and unloading of goods in the ports of Iran rose 10.7 percent during the first seven months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-October 22), as compared to the same period in the previous year.

According to PMO’s Ports Affairs Director Ravanbakhsh Behzadian, loading and unloading of goods at the country’s commercial ports reached 82.24 million tons in the mentioned period, while the figure stood at 74.31 million tons in the past year’s same time span.

During the said seven months, unloading and loading operations in the container sector reached 11.09 million tons, for dry bulk the figure stood at 26.56 million tons, in liquid bulk the figure was 2.56 million tons, while for general cargo (general and miscellaneous goods) it was 11.46 million tons and for the petroleum products loading and unloading volume amounted to 30.57 million tons, Behzadian said.

He noted that the loading and unloading operations in the dry bulk sector grew by 14.5 percent in the mentioned period compared to the last year’s same time span, while in the liquid bulk sector the figure increased by 27.5 percent, in the general cargo sector the growth was 8.8 Percent and the petroleum sector also experienced a growth of 17.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

While Iran is combating the U.S. unilateral sanctions on its economy, the country’s ports as the major gates of exports and imports play some significant role in this battle. This role makes all-out support to ports and more development of them serious and vital.

Such necessity has led the government to define projects for more development of the ports and also take some measures to encourage investment making in ports, in addition, to facilitate loading and unloading of goods, especially basic commodities, there.

It is worth mentioning that PMO has defined a high number of projects to develop and improve the country’s ports, as the country aims to double the capacity of its ports in a course of five years.

According to the Ports and Maritime Organization, the capacity of the country’s ports has increased from 180 million tons in the Iranian calendar year 1392 (ended in March 2014) to 250 million tons in the previous calendar year.

The total capacity of the country’s ports is expected to reach 280 million tons by the end of the current fiscal year (late March 2022).

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Transit of goods via Iran has risen 48 percent in the fourth Iranian calendar month Tir (June 22-July 22), as compared to the same month of the past year, the spokesman of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) announced.

Ruhollah Latifi said that 1.011 million tons of commodities has been transited via Iran in the fourth month of this year, while the figure was 682,000 tons in the fourth month of the previous year.

“The growth of transit in Tir of this year is a record compared to the same month of the past year, which we hope will increase due to the country’s position and geographical transit advantage”, the official stated.

As the IRICA head has recently announced, transit of goods via Iran’s land borders has risen 95 percent during the first four months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-July 22), as compared to the same period of time in the past year.

Mehdi Mir-Ashrafi said that 3.753 million tons of commodities has been transited through the land borders of the country in the mentioned four-month period, adding that the figure can be increased if the necessary infrastructure is laid, and some barriers are removed.

As previously announced by the IRICA spokesman, 7.532 million tons of commodities were transited through Iran in the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20) despite the restrictions created by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Latifi, transit of goods via Iran declined only 67 tons or 0.8 percent compared to the preceding year 1398 (March 2019-March 2020).

The mentioned volume of transit was achieved despite the fact that the figure was expected to fall significantly in the said year.

Iran is one of the countries that has a special status in trade and transit relations due to its strategic location and special geography, as the country is the passage of several important international corridors.

In the south of Iran is the Persian Gulf, which is home to the world’s major oil-producing countries. This region is considered as the energy bottleneck of the world.

In the north of Iran is the Caspian Sea, which is the best bridge between Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan and can play an important role in trade between these countries.

The country, on the other hand, borders Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan and Afghanistan to the west and east.

In other words, it can be said that Iran communicates with 15 countries through land and water borders, and at the same time it can act as a bridge between these countries (with each other and other parts of the world).

These countries have a large population and high income which can be effective as a factor in the development of transit and trade in the region.

The connection of Central Asian countries with the Persian Gulf, as well as the establishment of trade relations between East Asia and European countries through Iran, is very cost-effective, so that many of these countries seek to establish such relations through Iran.

This status has provided the country with many opportunities that making optimal use of them through the expansion of the transportation network and reliable and efficient communication, Iran can achieve foreign currency earnings and economic growth, and make transit revenue a suitable alternative to oil export, while improving its strategic position in the region.

Considering its geographical location, Iran can play a significant role in the transit of goods in the region and benefit a lot from its status in this due. To take full advantage of its location for transit, the country has many plans underway and, on the agenda, to boost its transit capacity.

Some of these plans include developing Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran’s largest and most-equipped container port in the south, and also Chabahar Port in the southeast of the country, connecting the ports to the railway network, development of transit via railway, and also some customs measures such as improving transit procedures in the customs offices.
