Iran will never forget US downing of IR655: Ghasemi

On the 30th anniversary of the downing of Iran Air Flight 655 by US naval warship, Iranian foreign ministry issued a statement on remembering the tragic event that led to the death of 290 passengers on board.

30 years ago today, an American naval warship, USS Vincennes, patrolling in the Persian Gulf shot down an Iranian passenger jet, IR655, after apparently mistaking it for an F-14 fighter, killing all 290 passengers and crew aboard, including 66 children.

In a Tuesday statement issued on remembering the tragic event, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said the passage of time has not healed the wounds of this “horrendous tragedy” and “savage operation”, adding that the crime will forever stain the reputation of the US, which has no fear of blatantly violating international norms and regulations.

The fact that the US not only has voiced the smallest regret over the crime but also awarded the commander of the American warship with the Legion of Merit for the killing of hundreds of innocent civilians stands to prove the country’s lack of fear of violating the international law, Ghasemi added.

“The US behavior toward Iran and other nations across the world reveals fully well that the country has always been a pioneer in carrying out inhumane acts to achieve its own sinister goals and interests, and that human rights to them is nothing but an instrument in service of their unlawful interests and excessive demands,” said Ghasemi.

The spokesman further stressed that the Iranian nation will never forget the US heinous crime.

Peaceful election, big gain for democracy in Lebanon: Ghasemi

Bahram Ghasemi, the Spokesman for Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the successful election in Lebanon as a victory and big accomplishment for democratic process in Lebanon.

In addition to extending greetings to Lebanese nation and government for successful conducting of an energetic parliamentary election in Lebanon, Bahram Ghasemi, the Spokesman for Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the event as a legendary and big victory for the whole Lebanese nation from all tribal walks and political movements.

The Iranian diplomat issued a congratulatory announcement on Monday evening after the early results showed that more than 49 percent of Lebanese took part in the parliamentary election on Sunday.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran maintains that holding a peaceful election at the current situation of the region is a big accomplishment for the democratic process serving all people of Lebanon,” he asserted.

Ghasemi dismisses agreement with EU on curbing Iran regional influence

FM Spokesman Ghasemi said Mon. the recent talks between Iran and E4 in Rome aimed at reaching a political solution to Yemeni crisis and that the two sides have made no new agreement on curbing Iran’s regional influence.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi made the remarks in his weekly press conference on Monday in response to a question about Trump’s attempts to curb Iran’s regional influence.

“Our talks focused on ways to send humanitarian aid to Yemeni people,” Ghasemi said in reference to a recent Iran-E4 meeting held in Rome. “We are making efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people and are hoping that the countries responsible for the dire situation in Yemen would allow humanitarian aid to reach these downtrodden people during the holy month of Ramadan.”

The meeting in Rome, the second of its kind after the one held in Munich, gathered top diplomats from Iran, Britain, France, Germany and Italy around a table to discuss the developments in Yemen. The EU statement issued at the end of the meeting deemed the political talks with Iran ‘constructive’ and announced the next round of the talks to be held in Brussels in the near future.

Asked to comment about the May 12 deadline and what Trump’s final decision would be regarding the fate of the JCPOA and sanctions waivers, Ghasemi said “one cannot tell at the moment. The JCPOA has certain features that make it difficult to withdraw from it.”

He stressed that if Trump decided to pull out of the deal, Iran’s response would be ‘painful’ for the US and would cause the American side much regret.

“Washington will pay a heavy price for exiting the nuclear agreement,” he said. “It will make the world all the more distrustful of the US.”

“Iran will not be the first country to violate the JCPOA, and once the agreement ceases to be profitable to the Iranian nation, we will take the necessary decisions,” he added.
