TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of energy commission of Tehran Chamber of Commerce predicted on Monday that, in case the government provides 65 trillion rials (about $500 million) of grants for converting cars into bi-fuel ones – running on both gasoline and CNG – Iran would be able to save 40 million liters of gasoline for exports per day.

According to Reza Padidar, “Converting vehicles into bi-fuel ones and replacing gasoline with CNG, using the granted financial resources by the government, will improve environmental issues and also decrease gasoline consumption for about 20 million liters daily.”

“As of implementation of gasoline rationing scheme, gasoline consumption has decreased for 20 million liters p/d and having another 20 million liters saved via upgrading cars into bi-fuel ones can give Iran the opportunity to export 40 million liters of gasoline p/d,” Padidar told Mehr news agency.

On December 7, the Spokesperson of the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters’ Union announced that the country has the possibility to export 25 million to 30 million liters of gasoline per day following the implementation of gasoline rationing scheme.

According to Hamid Hosseini, having the amount of gasoline export rise on a daily routine, Iran can earn three billion to four billion dollars.

“Presently, Iran produces 115 million liters of gasoline and as predicted, by implementing the rationing scheme, the country will have an excess of 30 million liters of gasoline per day, which can be exported,” Hosseini added.

On November 13, the Iranian government started rationing of subsidized gasoline and increased fuel prices as it plans to use the revenue for supporting underprivileged families.

According to a statement published by National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, the price for a liter of regular gasoline was increased to 15,000 rials (nearly 35 cents at the official rate of 42,000 rials per dollar) from 10,000 rials and the monthly ration for each passenger car was set at 60 liters. Additional purchases would cost 30,000 rials per liter.

On November 26, Oil Ministry announced that after the implementation of the gasoline rationing scheme, consumption has decreased by 19 million liters per day in Iran.

In a time span from November 15 to 24, Iranians consumed 79 million liters of gasoline daily, while their consumption stood at 98 million liters per day from March 21 to November 14, the ministry announced.

Iranians consumed an average level of 75 million liters of gasoline on November 24, the ministry added rejecting all the released unofficial data in the past days.

This is while on Monday, Traffic Police Chief General Kamal Hadianfar informed that following the implementation of rationing gasoline, domestic gasoline consumption has increased. “Consumption in the past two days has increased from 94 million liters to 105 million liters,” the Iranian General said.

Due to heavy subsidies and devaluation of its currency, Iran has one of the cheapest fuel prices in the world and the country has been fighting rampant fuel smuggling to neighboring countries.

In one of its latest reports dubbed “World Energy Outlook 2018”, the International Energy Agency (IEA) put Iran on top of the list of the world’s countries for energy subsidies. That means Iran holds the first place among the world’s countries in terms of the volume of subsidies which is allocated to energy consumption.

The gasoline produced in this refinery is of high quality that was selected as the first Iranian exports cargo to neighboring countries and paneled in the international exchange ring entitled “IRENEX”.

He expounded on the details of first gasoline shipment of the country and added, “more than a century has passed since the discovery of oil in Iran and we are delighted that the first gasoline is exported from the Persian Gulf Star Refinery (PGSR) as a historical event.”

Turning to the first sales of Iran’s gasoline cargo, he added, “the first sales of Iran’s gasoline cargo was successful.”

This shipment was sold at $20 per barrel, showing an accurate performance of the company in the international markets, he emphasized.

With regard to the main reason behind start of gasoline exports from this refinery, he added, “since domestic demand to this product is met and Iranian markets have been saturated for buying gasoline, at the decision taken by deputy oil minister and CEO of the National Iranian Oil Products, Refining and Distribution Company (NIOPRDC), export of this strategic product was followed up strictly.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, he stated, “gasoline produced in the Persian Gulf Star Refinery observes requirements of EUR-5 standard in terms of environment.”

The standard sulfur rate in this type of gasoline (EUR-5) should be less than 10 PPM (parts per million) while the gasoline produced in the refinery stands at less than 1PPM.
