TEHRAN (Iran News) Project Director of Infill Drilling at South Pars Gas Field Shobeir Nabavi says that with the completion of drilling and the operation of three wells in the current year (starting March 21, 2025), five million cubic meters have been added to the gas production of this shared field.

Nabavi said on Tuesday that the progress of the infill drilling project at South Pars Gas Field continues to enhance gas production.

He noted that three wells from this project have been fully operational, resulting in an overall increase of five million cubic meters per day in gas production from the South Pars field.

Given the progress in drilling other wells in this project, more wells are expected to come online in the coming months, he added.

The infill drilling project at South Pars Gas Field involves drilling 35 new wells across 17 existing gas platforms, and upon completion and full operation of this project, gas production at South Pars will increase by 36 million cubic meters per day.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran Increasing Gas Production at Turkmenistan Border. Managing Director of Iran’s East oil and Gas Production Company (EOGC) has announced the production of 16 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas – 43 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) – in the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20) in the Khangiran operational region and Shorijeh storing reserves (at areas bordering Turkmenistan).

According to Farshid Kheibari, EOGC’s production goals for the mentioned year were realized by 104 percent and even in some days the output exceeded 63 mcm/d, Shana reported.

EOGC was established in December 1998 in line with the policy of decentralizing the management in Iran’s oil industry.

The company is operating projects mainly in the east of the country. Currently, it is active in Khorasan Razavi province and is in charge of production from Mozdouran sour gas reservoir as well as Shourijeh B, Shourijeh D, and Gondbadli sweet gas reservoirs in the northeastern city of Sarakhs.

Referring to the need for accelerating the implementation of gas storage development projects as strategic projects in the oil industry, Kheibari also announced the storage of 1.856 bcm of gas in the Shourijeh D reservoir in the previous year.

“Due to the increase in the country’s gas consumption and in line with the Oil Ministry programs for providing sustainable gas for domestic and industrial sectors during winter, as well as the need for gas imports, especially in the northeast of the country, last year we managed to store 1.856 billion cubic meters of gas in Shourijeh D in the first eight months of the previous year (March 20-November 20, 2020),” Kheibari explained.

“A total of 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas was reproduced during the previous year’s cold season, which compared to the same period of the preceding year increased by about 28 percent in terms of storage and 18 percent in terms of reproduction,” he added.

Sustainable energy supply in the north and northeast regions which are significantly far from the main centers of gas production in the south of the country and the need to reduce dependence on gas imports has always been one of the main concerns of the Oil Ministry.

In this regard, according to NIGC plans, the capacity of the two storage facilities, Sarajeh and Shourijeh, is planned to increase to over seven billion cubic meters in near future.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh said the country would soon break the record of 1,000 million cubic meters of gas output per day.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday evening following a meeting with professors of the universities which have signed deals with the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) for carrying out studies on oil and gas fields, Oil Minister Zangeneh was quoted by SHANA as saying that a new production record would be registered in Azadegan in the near future as Tehran University is to fulfill its commitment for EOR studies in the field.

He also announced the production of gas from Phase 11 of the supergiant South Pars gas field by the end of the Rouhani Administration by 2021.

“The purpose of signing these contracts is to solve the problems of the fields considered in the deals and enhancing their recovery factor. This began in 2014 and has progressed despite all the ups and downs,” he said.

Referring to the participation of many professors and postgraduate students in these projects, he said, “The head of the Tehran University’s Institute of Petroleum gave some good news at the meeting that they are committed to bringing the recovery factor of the Sarvak Layer from currently 5% or 6% to a minimum of 10%, which is equal to an increase of 3.5 billion barrels of oil.”

Zangeneh continued, “Although we are facing financial problems, I believe generosity for universities will pay off.”

Petrochemical Sector on the Developing Trail

Answering a question about the performance of the petrochemical industry, the petroleum minister said, “We hope that the second petrochemical leap will be achieved by the year 2021, with the realization of which the annual petrochemical production capacity will be around 100 million tonnes and the value of the produced items will be close to $27 billion.”

He further said the projects that would reach fruition after then would be categorized in the third leap of the industry. By the end of the leap, Iran’s petrochemical production capacity is envisaged to cross 136 million tons per annum and the value of the produced items will generate $37 billion for the country.

New Gas Output Record in Near Future

“We have good plans in the field of gas output and soon we will break the record of production of 1,000 million cubic meters of gas per day, there is a lot of gas produced currently but consumption is high, too,” further said Zangeneh.

According to the Iranian Minister of Petroleum, Iran’s household sector currently consumes over 600 mcm/d while over 850 mcm/d of gas is being delivered to the national gas distribution network.

He said there would be supply cuts in public buildings in case consumption continued to remain high domestically. “However, we cannot cut the gas in the household sector.”

“In designing the gas network, our priority is to ensure that the household and public sectors do not suffer, and that small and large industries and power plants are our next priorities.”

Holding OPEC Emergency Meeting Unlikely

In response to a question about the possibility of an OPEC emergency meeting ahead of the OPEC extraordinary meeting due in March, he dismissed that possibility and, regarding the likelihood of intensification of the output cut deal, said, “It is not still clear what decision will be made in this regard.”

Initial Gas Production from South Pars Phase 11 by the End of Rouhani Administration

Zangeneh said Petropars was currently refining its jacket structures and strengthening its calculations in this regard and was holding licensing rounds for purchasing the needed items. “We hope that by the end of the administration, we will have an initial production from Phase 11. The plan is gas output of one billion cubic feet and of course, part of the equipment must be supplied from overseas.”

He said that there was no plan to build a gas pressure boosting station for the time being, adding, “We are currently studying and there are various alternatives, including offshore and onshore pressure boosters.”

Zangeneh also did not rule out a decline in gas output exports to Iraq, citing technical difficulties.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Germany have called on Europe to adopt protective measures against US sanctions after Washington managed to halt completion of a new submarine gas pipeline linking Russia directly to Germany.

The bipartisan US move initiated by Congress last week threatened sanctions against companies working on completing Nord Stream 2, Europe’s biggest energy infrastructure project, which the US and some European countries fear could give Russia some control over the continent’s energy supplies and boost revenues for an increasingly belligerent Kremlin, The Wall Street Journal wrote.

The move prompted Swiss pipe-laying company Allseas Group S.A. to stop work on the $10 billion pipelines, just weeks from completion. The pipe would double direct gas shipments to Germany by Russian’s state-owned gas giant PAO Gazprom.

Despite the announcement of the stoppage, Russian energy minister Alexander Novak told a state-owned press agency on Thursday that only 160km, or the underwater part of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, remained to be completed, work that would be finished within months by using Russian ships. Russian state media reported that Gazprom’s pipe-laying vessel Akademik Cherskiy, currently in the far east, would be brought to the Baltic to complete the pipeline.

The US’s move sparked outrage in Germany, prompting senior officials and politicians to call for a coordinated approach to protect the strategic interests of European Union members against future US sanctions.

“Europe needs new instruments to be able to defend itself from US licentious extraterritorial sanctions,” wrote Niels Annen, Germany’s deputy foreign minister, in a tweet last week.

The dispute adds to strain in the Western alliance since the Trump administration adopted a series of foreign-policy moves, including troop withdrawals, trade tariffs and the withdrawal from certain international agreements, without consulting with allies.

Some German officials say that fortifying Europe’s defenses against US sanctions could require closer cooperation with Russia and China at a time when President Trump is pressuring EU allies to side with Washington in its trade, technology and geopolitical disputes with Beijing.

Others questioned Washington’s motivations, saying that the sanctions were driven by the desire to increase exports of American liquefied natural gas or LNG.

Miguel Berger, the German Foreign Office’s director-general in charge of economic affairs, wrote in a tweet last week that the sanctions were an “attempt to use coercive measures for selling LNG to Europe.”

The extraterritorial reach of US economic sanctions has been a recurring irritant for Europe. Washington has imposed fines worth tens of billion dollars on European firms, especially banks, for past sanctions breaches, and European officials have worked on ways to protect the continent’s companies.

A senior German government official said, in response to the pipeline sanctions, that Germany would make a renewed European push to build a firewall against US sanctions when it takes over the EU’s rotating presidency next year.

One goal would be to create a separate financial infrastructure that would allow European companies to escape the scope of US sanctions. The banks involved would have to be based in jurisdictions out of the US’s reach, such as China or possibly Russia, the official said.

“Washington is treating the EU as an adversary. It is dealing the same way with Mexico, Canada, and with allies in Asia. This policy will provoke counter-reactions across the world,” this official said.

Some European officials, besides Germany, have even toyed with the idea of adopting sanctions of their own against the US, for instance, to deter policies they think endanger the environment.

“What if the EU Parliament would sanction the Keystone pipeline on environmental grounds,” a senior German diplomat asked, speaking to The Wall Street Journal this week, in reference to the oil pipeline connecting Canada and the US that has been opposed by environmentalists in both countries.

Building a shield against US sanctions is difficult because of the size of the US economy, the role of the dollar in international transactions, and the fact that the US has control over much of the world’s financial plumbing.

The EU has failed to protect its companies that do business in Iran since the US reintroduced sanctions against the country last year after Washington exited the 2015 nuclear deal. US officials have urged Europe to tighten its own sanctions on Iran instead of trying to work around US measures.

In January, the British, French, and German governments created a company to carry out a complicated barter-like scheme with an Iranian counterpart out of America’s reach. So far, it has not completed a single transaction.

Richard Nephew, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said the rising frictions between the US and its traditional allies would encourage the development of similar arrangements.

Russia and China have banks and other companies that do no business in the US and are thus immune from US sanctions. Some of those firms, like China’s Bank of Kunlun, were the main conduit for China’s Iran sales under the previous pre-nuclear-deal set of Iran sanctions.

Yet for Western firms to start using such institutions would carry reputational and compliance risks. Even Chinese firms have grown more cautious about bucking US sanctions. Bank of Kunlun, whose China National Petroleum Corp. parent is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has repeatedly frozen business with Iranian firms over the last year. China’s purchase of Iranian oil plummeted after US sanctions waivers were removed.

Peter Beyer, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trans-Atlantic affairs coordinator, told German radio on Wednesday that finishing the pipeline would now be more expensive, but that it would be completed in the second half of 2020.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s South Pars daily gas production will reach one billion cubic meters (bcm) by March 2020, which would be a miraculous achievement at a time when the country is under severe unilateral sanctions imposed by the US, said an Iranian MP.

In May 2018, President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed between Iran and the P5+1 in July 2015, and reimposed Washington’s unilateral sanctions on Tehran.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Iran Daily, Ali Bakhtiar, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s Energy Committee, added this will be accomplished in light of the completion of the development projects of a number of the phases of the South Pars (SP) Gas Field in the Persian Gulf by the same date.

Iran jointly owns the field with Qatar, which calls its part of the world’s largest gas reserve, the North Dome, and recently managed to overtake the Arab country in extraction from the joint field.

He described by developing South Pars fields, Iran’s being ahead of Qatar in gas production from the field as a great achievement, while being under strict US sanctions, adding that the country had accomplished this over the past 12 months while none of the world’s major companies were cooperating with it.

“Iran managed to get past Qatar in gas extraction from SP while relying on domestic companies’ capabilities. This comes as the Qataris have been cooperating all the while with all of the world’s leading companies in production from the field.”

He noted that Iran sits on the world’s biggest hydrocarbon (oil and gas together) reserves.

“At present, no country can officially purchase oil from Iran as the US has ended waivers from its unilateral sanctions for customers of Iranian crude. Nevertheless, even under the present difficult circumstances, we have certain techniques to bypass the sanctions. We are currently continuing our oil exports although at a slower pace and in a smaller volume [compared to the pre-sanctions era].”

Bakhtiar said the US has failed to make its dream of reducing Iran’s oil exports to zero come true, noting that in November 2018, when the white House announced that it would bring Iran’s overseas sales of crude to zero, “we put our crude cargo on sale on Iran Energy Exchange (IRENEX) and managed to sell our oil in one of the most transparent markets.”

Elaborating further on Iran’s strategy of selling oil through IRENEX, he added that over the past few years, the ground became prepared for, first, selling petrochemicals and, then, offering oil byproducts.

Offering oil on the domestic stock exchange began following the achievement to sell oil byproducts on IRENEX, the lawmaker said, describing the experience as successful.

Turning to problems involved in offering crude oil on IRENEX, he said the drawbacks can be overcome, making the continuation of the process definitely possible.

“We are required to use the domestic capital market to sell oil, particularly, as Iranians are willing to purchase crude through the stock exchange.”

It is interesting for them to be able to use their capital for buying crude oil on the stock exchange, he said.

Bakhtiar said the Iranian Parliament’s Energy Committee is studying and exploring different techniques and strategies for selling oil and will welcome and support new plans and ideas to this end.

Abolhassan Mohammadi described the progress of activities in his company in the areas of repairing, production and gas injection as satisfactory, saying that two new wells would become operational by fall adding 2.5 mcm/d to Khangiran’s gas production capacity, Shana reported.

He said the company fully met its production goals in the first half of the current calendar year, which began on March 21, adding plans for gas injection and overhaul operations are seriously ongoing in order to ensure gas supply in the winter.

East Oil and Gas Production Company is one of the three subsidiaries of the Iranian Central Oil Fields Company, and is responsible for supplying gas to northeastern provinces including Golestan, North Khorasan, South Khorasan, Mazanaran and parts of Semnan.

Iran has sought to increase its daily production at oil and gas fields despite sanctions imposed by the United States which restricts Tehran’s ability for export.

Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh had said earlier this year that Iran’s gas production at South Pars gas field, the largest in the world which the country shares with Qatar, had already exceeded 21.5 billion feet (610 million cubic meters) per day, adding that Iran’s share of daily production at the field had dwarfed that of Qatar.

Speaking in a meeting of the board of directors of Azarbaijan Sharghi Gas Company, Torbati said people’s satisfaction was the best criteria for assessing NIGC’s services, therefore, “we endeavor to offer better services day by day.”

Today, gas distribution is in a suitable state and distribution of gas has been accelerated thanks to the supportive law in the budget bill of 2014, he said.

The official noted that Iran is one of the few countries in the world where 95 percent of its population have access to the gas network which is an indication of unparalleled social justice in the country.
