“I don’t think that the US sanctions can apply to the IP project at this stage,” Muhammad Ali responded to a question during a news conference in the Pakistani capital.

When asked about US’s anti-Iran sanctions, the interim minister replied that he was unaware of what the Americans wanted in connection with the IP gas pipeline project.Meanwhile, he said work on 80 kilometers of the pipeline in the Pakistani territory would be carried out, adding that it would take around 1.5 years to complete the pipeline project in the Pakistani territory.“It will take time to connect it with the Iranian side for the supply of gas,” he added.

The remarks come as Islamabad has given the green light for advancing much-delayed work on gas pipelines within its territory.

Analysts say the project will improve Pakistan’s energy security and support regional industries by providing stable and enhanced gas supplies.

“We should make it a trade border, not an international border, and Pakistan and Iran should actually enhance their trade. And there is so much of informal trade which is going on between both countries. It has to be formalized and increased and to truly go in the national interest and benefit of both nations,” stated Reza Muhammad, president of Islamabad Policy Research Institute.

Iran has extended the project deadline by 180 days until September 2024 so as to avoid a legal dispute with Pakistan at international tribunals.

The project, launched in 2013, required Pakistan to finish the construction of the pipeline on its territory by the end of 2014.

But the work stalled, upsetting Tehran, which has said it already invested $2 billion in the pipeline on its side of the border.

Washington has opposed the pipeline, saying it could violate the illegal sanctions imposed on Tehran.

Pakistan will likely face an 18-billion-dollar fine if it terminates the gas pipeline agreement.

Experts say that Pakistan’s decision to kick off work on the gas pipeline project in its territory comes due to fear of a potential penalty for failing to complete the project.

No Clear Reason Behind Turkey Delay in Repairing Gas Pipeline

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Dispatching Director Mehdi Jamshidi Dana says although Turkey has announced it would receive necessary equipment for repairing the exploded gas pipeline, the reason behind its delay is still unknown

Speaking to ILNA, Jamshidi Dana said that Iran has officially announced its Turkish partner its readiness to dispatch necessary equipment and skillful forces for repairing the gas pipeline and it has no problem.

He went on to say that he does not understand the reason behind Turkey’s delay for repairing the pipeline and resumption of receiving gas, admitting there are several assumptions but the main reason is vague. Jamshidi Dana once again reiterated that Iran can repair the pipeline in a week.

On the extension of contract for gas exports to Turkey, he said the outbreak of the Coronavirus has delayed the talks for extension of contract but it is on the agenda and there is no problem.

Meanwhile a member of energy commission of Majlis said according to the international obligations, Iran should export gas to Turkey according to the contract and Turkey should get it.

On the possible U.S. pressures on Turkey for not buying Iran’s gas, Reza Bakhtiar said the relation between Iran and Turkey has been good and amicable even in the sanctions era and it does not seem Turkey to stop buying Iran gas due to the U.S. sanctions because they know that sanctions are temporary.

Earlier on Monday, Oil Minister said Turkey had been delaying repair work on blown-up gas pipeline with no clear reason.

Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said he was unaware why Turkey had been delaying repair work on an Iranian gas pipeline that was blown up in late March.

“I don’t know for what reason the repair has been delayed,” said Zanganeh, adding that such repair works usually takes several days to complete.

The comments come against then backdrop of reports suggesting that Turkey is deliberately delaying the repairs on the gas pipeline that was blown up on March 31. Those reports say Ankara is trying to get a price reduction from Iran while it also seeks to appease the United States which pressures other countries to halt energy trade with Iran.

Zanganeh said that Turkey has also refused to allow Iran to carry out the repair work on then gas pipeline.

“We declared that we are ready to repair this pipeline for them but the Turks did not welcome this proposal,” he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – People of Canada have staged large-scale protests against a new natural gas pipeline across the country, leading to major transportation disruptions, building occupations, and dozens of arrests by police.

The 670-kilometer Coastal Gas Link pipeline project, opposed by indigenous Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs, would make it easier to export natural gas in British Columbia but its route goes through indigenous Canada land.

Several indigenous camps have been set up to block access to pipeline construction sites in protest.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have over the past few days intervened to enforce a court order and clear the original protest blocking work on a construction site. That intervention has prompted more protests in solidarity with the indigenous people.

On Monday, dozens of protesters were arrested for trying to block access to the Pacific port of Vancouver.

A major rail line connecting Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal was also shut down by protesters on Tuesday, forcing more than 20,000 passengers to cancel trips. The Canadian National Railway said it would also close “significant” parts of its network unless rail lines were cleared.

Canadian Transport Minister Marc Garneau expressed concern about the “illegal” and “significant disruption” to rail services.

“We hope this will get resolved as quickly as possible because it’s having an important impact on the economy of the country,” he said, adding that protesting on railway tracks could also be dangerous.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, a few dozen protesters took over Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett’s constituency office, demanding that the multi-billion dollar project be scrapped.

In Ottawa, a group of protesters occupied the lobby of the Justice Department, while in Victoria, a number of protesters surrounded the British Columbia legislature, preventing lawmakers’ access.

This is not the first time people march in Canada to protest pipeline expansion projects. In March 2018, Canadians staged a protest rally against the Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project, expressing alarm at the risk of oil spills and detrimental impacts on the local environment and wildlife.

Abolhassan Mohammadi described the progress of activities in his company in the areas of repairing, production and gas injection as satisfactory, saying that two new wells would become operational by fall adding 2.5 mcm/d to Khangiran’s gas production capacity, Shana reported.

He said the company fully met its production goals in the first half of the current calendar year, which began on March 21, adding plans for gas injection and overhaul operations are seriously ongoing in order to ensure gas supply in the winter.

East Oil and Gas Production Company is one of the three subsidiaries of the Iranian Central Oil Fields Company, and is responsible for supplying gas to northeastern provinces including Golestan, North Khorasan, South Khorasan, Mazanaran and parts of Semnan.

Iran has sought to increase its daily production at oil and gas fields despite sanctions imposed by the United States which restricts Tehran’s ability for export.

Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh had said earlier this year that Iran’s gas production at South Pars gas field, the largest in the world which the country shares with Qatar, had already exceeded 21.5 billion feet (610 million cubic meters) per day, adding that Iran’s share of daily production at the field had dwarfed that of Qatar.

He made the announcement in a Wednesday meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Islamabad Mehdi Honardoost.

During the meeting, the Pakistani official expressed hope that the major project would see its bright days in the near future.

Back in March 2016, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told reporters in Islamabad that the gas pipeline had already been completed on the Iranian side.

The joint project was launched in 2010, aimed at construction of 1,800 kilometers of pipeline from Iran to Pakistan. Iran has made over $2 billion of investment in the project.

Mandviwalla also highlighted the need to increase volume of trade transactions and investment between the two countries, calling for the resumption of activities of Iran-Pakistan investment company; “the move will benefit both sides and can provide an effective channel for joint trade and investment,” he added.

The Pakistani parliamentary official further maintained that Tehran and Islamabad share common views on regional and international issues, stressing that there are ample opportunities for the two sides to further develop bilateral relations.
