TEHRAN (Iran News) – Some 233 billion cubic meters of natural gas was consumed in the country during the previous year while the figure stood at 216 billion cubic meters in 1398, IRNA reported, quoting Mohammadreza Jolaei as saying.

According to Jolaei, of the total gas consumption in the previous year, 122 billion cubic meters was consumed by domestic, commercial, and non-major industries, 24 billion cubic meters was the share of major industries and 66 billion cubic meters was allocated to power plants.

The official noted that during the past year, the consumption by domestic sector and power plants hit new record highs but NIGC managed to prevent any major blackouts even during the peak consumption periods.

The country’s power plants received an average of 167 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas per day in 1398, which reached 181 million cubic meters per day in the previous year, indicating a 5.1 billion increase in the power plants’ gas consumption.

According to Julaei, some 262 billion cubic meters of gas was injected into the national gas network in the previous year, registering a six-percent rise compared to 1398.

Mentioning the average gas consumption during the current Iranian calendar month (started on March 21), the official put the figure at 606 million cubic meters for Saturday, April 3.

Iran is currently producing over 810 mcm of natural gas on a daily basis which is mostly used inside the country for the domestic sector and also as fuel for the power plants and a small portion is also exported to neighboring countries like Iraq.

According to NIGC Managing Director Hasan Montazer Torbati, of the total produced gas, some 25 percent goes to household consumption, 37 percent is supplied to the power plants, 30 percent is used in the industry sector, four percent used as CNG and four percent is for other consumptions.

Montazer Torbati stated that gas supply has been developed significantly in the cities and villages of the country over the past seven years due to the increase in gas production in the South Pars gas field.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s natural gas consumption reached 104 billion cubic meters (bcm) in the first half of the current calendar year ending September 21.

A senior official at the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) said that power plants had been responsible for the highest usage of natural gas in Iran with 41.34 bcm burnt for electricity generation over the past six months, Press TV reported.

Mohammadreza Julayi, who heads dispatching operations at the NIGC, said that households and small businesses used 39.63 bcm of gas over the period while some 23.82 bcm went to large manufacturers and industrial units.

Julayi said that the total natural gas injected to the nationwide gas pipelines between March 21 and September 21 had reached nearly 120.25 bcm, an increase of five percent compared to the similar period in 2019.

Iran’s daily gas consumption in summer days is over 550 mcm with Julayi saying that consumption on September 22, which marked the first day of autumn in the Persian calendar yea, peaked 554 million cubic meters.

Iran’s growing demand for natural gas has been met with a stable increase in the country’s production capacity. Government figures show actual output will top 1 bcm per day by March 2021, a bulk of which would come from the sprawling South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf.

Rising output has helped government save a huge amount of gas oil burnt in electricity stations to make it available for exports.

NIGC figures and international reports published in recent years suggest that increased gas oil exports have provided a lifeline to the Iranian government as it keeps struggling with lower crude sales due to American sanctions and lower demand for oil in the international markets.

IRNA also reported on Wednesday that Iran’s capacity for natural gas refining increased from 670 mcm per day in 2013 to 1.11 bcm per day this year.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – An apparent gas leak killed at least 14 people near the Pakistan port city of Karachi, officials said Tuesday, as investigators worked to determine the source of the deadly emission.

Residents of Keamari in Pakistan, a commercial and residential area, began falling sick Sunday on apparently a toxic gas leak, officials said.

A doctor at one hospital, who asked not to be named, said 250 people had been admitted for treatment, after complaining of breathing difficulties and burning eyes after the mysterious emission.

Local health ministry spokesman Zafar Mehdi told AFP that 14 people had died at various hospitals due to breathing in the environment influenced by the toxic gas.

At the state-run Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Center, about 35 people arrived for emergency treatment.

“Most of the patients were suffering from choking and breathlessness,” Seemin Jamali, who heads the emergency department, told AFP.

Authorities initially suspected some sort of gas could have leaked from the port, but the Karachi Port Trust denied that was the case.

“All the casualties took place outside the port, and our facility is clean,” a port spokesman said.

Authorities have sought help from the navy’s chemical and biological department, according to Nasir Shah, the provincial information minister.
