TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran condemns G7 statement, calls it baseless. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh issued a statement on Saturday stating that attributing suspected attack on an Israeli-operated oil tanker to Iran are “baseless scenarios” designed to complicate the atmosphere.

“We condemn the baseless statement of the G7 foreign ministers and the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, which is full of baseless allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Khatibzadeh said in response to the statement of the G7 foreign ministers.

The spokesman added that the Mercer ship incident occurred just a few days before the inauguration of the new Iranian president, which is a manifestation of the democratic transfer of power in Iran.

“Such baseless scenarios, which are often the work of the Zionist regime from behind the scenes, are designed to confuse the atmosphere,” he added.

According to the spokesman, these allegations have customers among those who are immediately ready for unrealistic and irrational conclusions.

“In fact, for the experts and those familiar with the history of this region, the planning of such conspiracies by the Zionist regime at different times is not new,” he added.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman concluded by saying that Iran is fully committed to securing the strategic waterway of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz and considers it a part of its security.

Khatibzadeh added Iran will not hesitate to defend its sovereign rights in the strategic waterway.

On August 6, the G7 issued a statement calling the incident for the Mercer ship “a targeted and deliberate attack,” pointing fingers towards Iran.

Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, a senior spokesman for the Iranian military, has said that “if we are going to confront the enemy, we will explicitly declare it, like the attack on Ein al-Assad base.”

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Islamic Republic Guard Corps Aerospace Force, also reacted to threats against Iran in regard to the suspected attack on the ship, saying, “They have already tested us and know what kind of response they will face… therefore they must know that if they want to do any adventure (against Iran) they will receive a crushing response.”

According to the paper, the discussion of the reform plan with WHO and G7 members is to begin in September.

The main goal of the reform would be to increase the organization’s operational efficiency and ensure full transparency of information about disease outbreaks both on behalf of the WHO and its member states, TASS reported.

G7 hopes to gain broad support for its plan during the November session of the World Health Assembly – the supreme governing body of the international organization.

US President Donald Trump said on May 29 that Washington was terminating its relations with the World Health Organization “because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms.” The US leader claimed the WHO was being controlled by China and accused China and the WHO of not taking due measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus infection.

The United States notified the United Nations about its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) from July 6, 2021, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump said he would invite Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the G7 summit in the United States.

“I certainly would invite Putin to the G7 meeting. I think he’s an important factor,” Trump told a White House briefing on Monday answering a question.

Trump also told reporters he was considering plans of holding the G7 summit after the November election. “I’m much more inclined to do it sometime after the election.”

According to Trump, the US has not yet formally invited leaders. “We haven’t sent out invitations. We’re talking to them,” he said, noting that there were plans on inviting countries that aren’t formal members of the G7, TASS reported.

The summit, which was due to be held at Camp David in June, was later postponed until September. Trump earlier announced plans to invite Russia, Australia, India, and South Korea to this meeting.

The G7 is a group of industrialized nations that includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The group held its first meeting in 1975. The G7 was renamed the G8 in 1997 when Russia joined the club. However, following the 2014 events in Ukraine that created a crisis in relations between Russia and the West, the group’s Western members decided to revert to the G7 model.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Japan has told the US it opposes a suggestion by US President Donald Trump to add Seoul to the G7 summit, diplomatic sources said, in a move likely to further chill already frozen ties with South Korea.

The message, in which Tokyo claimed Seoul is out of lockstep with G7 members on Chinese and North Korean issues, was conveyed by a high-level Japanese government official immediately after Trump on May 30 broached the idea of inviting Australia, India, Russia, and South Korea to this year’s summit. The US leader is due to preside over the summit later this year.

The diplomatic sources said the Japanese official was told by the US side that any final decision on the issue would rest with Trump.

The revelation that Japan expressed opposition to South Korea’s participation is likely to upset Seoul, which has welcomed Trump’s offer. It could further sour Tokyo-Seoul ties already overshadowed by disputes over wartime history and other issues.

On a TV program Sunday, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi echoed Tokyo’s opposition to Trump’s suggestion.

“It’s very important to keep the G7 framework itself, and I believe this is an overall consensus,” he said, Kyodo News Agency reported.

For Japan, South Korea’s inclusion would mean losing its status as the sole Asian member of the G7, which also brings together Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the United States plus the European Union.

Trump has suggested that he wants to expand the G7 because he believes the current membership does not properly represent the global situation and is “very outdated.”

Trump was also quoted as telling South Korean President Moon Jae-in during phone talks earlier in June that he may also invite Brazil, with the expanded group to be called either the “G11” or “G12,” according to the South Korean presidential office.

According to the sources, the high-level Japanese official pointed to the Moon administration’s perceived pro-China policy as problematic, apparently with the Trump administration’s current confrontational approach to China in mind.

The Moon administration has also striven to boost inter-Korean relations. The Trump administration has not budged from its stance of maintaining sanctions on Pyongyang during talks to denuclearize North Korea, which have been stalled for months.

According to the sources, the Japanese government has refrained from publicly expressing its opposition to South Korea’s participation, thinking that Trump’s G7 expansion proposal maybe just “a thought” that might fizzle out.

Japan’s top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said at a news conference on June 1 that the G7 is an “important framework” for coordination in tackling global challenges.

Asked whether the US government had informed Japan of Trump’s G7 expansion plan, Suga said, “I will refrain from speaking about the details, but Japan and the United States are engaged in close communication.”

Members such as Canada, meanwhile, have expressed opposition to Russia’s return to the forum. Russia, which was a member of the Group of Eight, was dropped from the framework following the international outcry over its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

“We thought Japan does not need to lead the opposition (on this issue),” one of the sources said.

Trump has been unclear on exactly when he plans to hold the G7 summit after postponing it from June. He said on May 30 that it could take place in September or even after the November presidential election.

While it is up to the holder of the rotating G7 presidency to decide which countries to invite as guests to the summit, changing the format on a permanent basis would require the consent of all members.

Japan would not object to South Korea merely taking part in an outreach session of the G7 meeting, the sources said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that the Group of Seven summit of world leaders, aka G7, would be postponed until at least September.

“I’m postponing it because I don’t feel as a G7 it probably represents what’s going on in the world. It’s a very outdated group of countries,” Trump said, according to a press pool report. He also said he’d like to invite additional countries, including Russia, Australia, South Korea, and India, to attend the summit, NBC News reported.

Russia was ejected from what was then the G8 in 2014 as punishment for the annexation of Crimea.

The announcement comes a day after AP and other news outlets reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel would not attend a meeting in-person amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this month, Trump tweeted that he was considering rescheduling the G7 for June at Camp David in Washington as a sign of “normalization.” But on Friday, Merkel refused the invitation, citing the continued risk of the pandemic.

“The federal chancellor thanks President Trump for his invitation to the G7 summit at the end of June in Washington. As of today, considering the overall pandemic situation, she cannot agree to her personal participation, to a journey to Washington,” a German government spokesman told Politico.

G7 is the nickname for the informal group of seven large industrialized countries — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States — that meet periodically to discuss global matters. Originally scheduled for June 2020, Trump said in March the event would be held virtually before later changing his mind and reviving the idea of an in-person event this summer.

“I have recently held telephone talks with the leaders of the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. Today the heads of the G7 countries will hold a teleconference at 11 pm [local time] about the coronavirus outbreak,” Abe said. “I hope that we will discuss measures on how to unite in the fight against the virus spread,” he added, according to TASS.

The Chinese authorities registered an outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the city of Wuhan. 157 countries have been grappling with the outbreak since December. The biggest foci are Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Germany, France, the US, Switzerland, the UK, and Norway. On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. Outside of China, most cases of the new coronavirus were reported in South Korea, Iran, and Italy.

According to the latest reports around the world, the total number of coronavirus cases worldwide has hit 169,610 with 6,518 deaths as of Tuesday.

“The creation of G20 was the recognition that G7 cannot anymore decide any issue of any significance,” Lavrov said. “And G20 which embraces G7, BRICS and like-minded countries who support the BRICS position on many occasions. This is a workable organization, especially in a situation when developing countries have grievances regarding the lack of progress on the reform of the UN Security Council.”

Lavrov stressed that the main deficiency of the UN Security Council is an underrepresentation of developing countries. “We repeatedly reiterated our position that India and Brazil absolutely deserve to be on the Council together with an African candidate. And our position is that the purpose of the UN reform is to make sure that the developing countries have a better treatment in the central organ of the United Nations,” he said, Tass reported.

He highlighted that the UN Charter is the anchor of any discussions on global issues.

“The principles such as sovereign equality of states, non-interference in internal matters, respect for territorial integrity, peaceful resolution of disputes should be applicable to each and every situation in the world. They should be the guiding point for any discussion to develop any new ideas on the world arena,” Lavrov noted.

The G7 summit opened on Saturday evening in the French resort of Biarritz as the leaders met at a closed-door dinner.

According to NHK, Japanese government officials say that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe touched upon his visit to Iran in June.

He is said to have expressed grave concern over Iran’s uranium enrichment level exceeding the limit.

And the officials say that he stressed Japan’s determination to continue with diplomatic efforts.

The leaders, reportedly, concurred that nobody wants war. It seems that the leaders did not discuss the international coalition in the Strait of Hormuz which Washington is proposing.

In mid-July, as tensions between the United States and Iran continued to simmer, the possibility of Japanese participation in a US-led maritime coalition to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz became a hot topic of debate in Tokyo, even before the Japanese government publicly confirmed that the US had asked for its assistance. When US Defense Secretary Mark Esper visited Tokyo earlier in August, he requested Japan’s participation in such a maritime coalition. Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya informed Esper that Japan would make a decision after considering various factors, including Japan’s need to ensure its energy security, maintain its positive ties with Iran.

In June, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe became the first Japanese leader to visit Iran since the overthrow of the shah in 1979, but there was no tangible breakthrough at that time. Abe will have another chance at Iran diplomacy in September, when he is expected to meet President Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

In response to an anti-Iranian statement of G7 ministerial meeting, Ghasemi said, “the Islamic Republic of Iran evaluates the final paragraphs of this statement as unconstructive and totally unilateral and also considers it clearly contradictory to JCPOA and commitments of its European signatories.

The statement is based on false allegations and misrepresentations of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and also of Iran’s missile program and regional role, he stressed.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has complied with its international commitments and has shown goodwill in its dialogue with the international community, he said, adding that futile efforts to introduce Iran as a threat will not affect the nation’s determination to pursue its national interests in the region and in the world.

Ghasemi regretted that G7 members are being influenced by bullying behavior of Washington are just after satisfying the United States which is only one member of the body.

He condemned the violation of JCPOA by the three European signatories and demanded their clear explanation about this issue, adding, “Iran will pursue this issue using mechanisms available in JCPOA.”

In their statement, G7 members claimed that Iran is carrying out “destabilizing activities in the region, including its continuing support for terrorist organizations and armed militias.” It also voices concern about Iran missile program while Tehran has repeatedly announced that missiles are just a mean for deterrence and not a threat to other states.
