General manager of Kurdistan Region Affairs of Iraq and Iran, Abdullah Akerei, made the remark in an interview with KRG media on Monday, announcing that a delegation headed by the governor of Erbil, Nawzad Hadi, will soon visit the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan to confer on ways to further expand economic cooperation.

A trade conference will also be held in line with the visit of the KRG delegation with participation of the chambers of commerce from Azerbaijan and Erbil, he added.

He went on to note, “following the visit of KRG prime minister to Iran and the unique role of the Islamic Republic in Iraq and the region, the Kurdistan region has focused its strategy on developing economic ties with Iran.”

According to him, the two sides will soon open a series of serious talks by exchanging economic delegations.

TEHRAN – Phil Hogan, European Union commissioner for agriculture and rural development, has predicted a bright future for economic cooperation between Iran and the European Union, particularly in food and agriculture sectors.

“We seek to tighten bilateral ties between Iran and the EU which secures interests of both sides,” he said.
Hogan, leading a 70-member delegation from 40 European companies to Tehran, made the remarks addressing the Iran-EU Agri-Food Business Forum at the place of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIMA) on Saturday.

“Some 40 European companies from 19 EU countries are attending this forum and all of them have high potentials for boosting cooperation with Iran in various fields of the food industry.”

The commissioner, elsewhere, called for European companies to become more familiar with investment opportunities in Iran as well as related regulations.

The Iranian government seeks to improve food production standards, the European official said, adding that European companies can share their experiences with their Iranian counterparts in this regard, while recognizing needs of customers to supply suitable products.

60% rise in trade since JCPOA

TCCIMA Head Masoud Khansari, who hosted the event, for his part addressed the issue of banking barriers on the way of boosting the Iran-EU cooperation.

Referring to the 60-percent rise in the two-way trade after the implementation of Iran’s nuclear deal – officially known as the JCPOA – in January 2016, he regretted that banking impediments still hinder the growth of trade with EU.

“EU is the second major destination for exports of Iranian products, accounting for 13 percent of Iran’s annual foreign trade,” he announced.

Khansari also referred to the ample investment opportunities in various sectors of the Iranian economy, saying that “regarding Iran’s population of 80 million people and access to a regional 400-million-market, European investors can benefit from boosting cooperation, particularly in food industry, with Iranian firms.”

“The Iranian food industry has witnessed an acceptable growth and food products have presently a big stake in Iran’s non-oil exports,” he said, “By expanding their ties with Iranian companies, European investors active in this sector will have the chance to find their way to other markets in the region.”

TEHRAN – Research sheds new light on how the body converts the bad kind of cholesterol. The discovery could lead to new and potentially more effective medicine.

More than 600,000 Danes are being treated with cholesterol lowering medicine. 98 per cent of them are treated with statins, which curb the body’s own production of cholesterol so that the level of cholesterol falls. However, statins also give rise to the body forming more of a harmful protein — known as PCSK9 — which counters the effect of the statins.

New research from Aarhus University has now uncovered the way in which PCSK9 breaks down the LDL receptors, which are a kind of receptor molecule that absorbs the bad LDL cholesterol in the blood into the liver.

This discovery makes it possible to develop potentially more efficient and also cheaper PCSK9 inhibiting medicine, which is the new hope for cholesterol treatment, ScienceDaily reported.

“Statins save many lives every year, but the medicine has the unfortunate consequence that the liver cells begin to produce more PSCK9. We have now uncovered how PCSK9 is captured by specific molecules in the liver called heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG), which subsequently lead to the breaking down of the LDL receptor. The consequence is less LDL receptor in the liver, higher LDL cholesterol in the blood and an increased risk of blood clots in the heart. If this process is inhibited, the LDL receptor is protected against degradation, and the amount of cholesterol in the blood falls,” says Camilla Gustafsen, who is one of the researchers behind the result and assistant professor at the Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University.

With the discovery, the researchers have provided one of the pieces that has been missing in the puzzle of understanding PCSK9, and this opens up for the development of a new type of medicine that can potentially work far better than statins.

The research result has just been published in the international scientific journal Nature Communications.

Potential for better and cheaper medicine

PCSK9 inhibiting medicine is already available on the market, but due to high costs it is only offered to patients who are particularly at risk, as well as those who do not have benefit from or are intolerant to statins. Using the new knowledge about PCSK9, the researchers from Aarhus have begun to develop new medicine that is now ready for the first tests on patients.

“The development of PCSK9 inhibitors is one of the biggest biomedical success stories of recent times, and getting basic research translated into medicine has happened extremely quickly thanks to intense research around the world. But there are still aspects of the PSCK9 protein that we do not yet fully understand. The new discovery shows the potential for creating more effective PCSK9 inhibitors than those we have today, and more cheaply, so that they become accessible for many more people in line with statins,” says Simon Glerup, who is one of the driving forces behind the research project and associate professor at the Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University.

The first medicine must first undergo comprehensive testing and will first be available for patients in five years at the earliest.
