TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran Not Seeking Imports of Goods in Exchange of Frozen Money in Turkey. Head of Iran-Turkey Joint Chamber of Commerce Mehrdad Saadat Dehghan says Iran is not seeking imports of goods from Turkey in exchange for its frozen money.

Mr. Saadat said in the first quarter of the year exports have grown in all fields and this growth has also happened in trade with Turkey and recent change of forex policy of the Central Bank of Iran has been very effective regarding this growth.

On the reason behind the trade exchange growth between Iran and Turkey in the first quarter, he said that as he had said in the past if some certain issues and differences between the two countries were resolved and observed, the trade volume between Iran and Turkey would increase and this is happening. He went on to say that the Vienna talks on removing sanctions has also been effective in this growth and Turkish business activists are waiting for the outcome of the talks.

Saadat noted that the trade between the two countries is gradually returning to its main position and expressed hope that soon it would be materialized and both sides can see the impacts of the Vienna talks in the trade between Iran and Turkey.

He also stated that the efforts of the joint chamber and the talks which have been held via the chamber as well as the joint economic commission of Iran and Turkey which was held last month have had its own impacts on this growth.

Saadat also said recent forex policy changes by the CBI have also had its own effects on this soar in trade and all of these factors showing the trade between Iran and Turkey is growing and it is hoped it can bounce back to the pre-sanctions era.

He went on to say that recent statistics issued by the Iran Customs Administration show that Iran’s exports have grown in the first quarter in all sectors and it has also happened in the trade with Turkey.

He stated due to the forex commitment policy, the trade had faced problems in the past but after amending these policies, now the trade has been accelerated and exporters can have at least a one-year roadmap for their trade activities.

Saadat reiterated that the only way for the survival of the country is to promote exports and the country has no way but to promote exports and to take advantage of its capacities. He expressed hope by removal of the sanctions, the exports and trade would be enhanced because the country has good customers for its goods and sanctions have made difficult trade with them.

In response to a question on Iran’s monetary resources in Turkey for imports of the goods by using these resources, he said that if the sanctions are removed all these resources would return to the country and there is no need to use those resources for imports of goods in exchange for those resources.

Saadat reiterated that Iran is mainly after unblocking its assets in Turkey and return it to the Central Bank in order that the country uses the money wherever it is required. He noted that the chamber does not want to finance imports through the country’s frozen money in Turkish banks.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Khatibzadeh rejected the “untrue” reports about the relations between Tehran and Beijing, saying, “No (Iranian) money is blocked in China.”

“Many (such) reports (about Iran-China ties) are incorrect. We are in constant talks with the Chinese,” he stated.

There are resources in China that are being used for Iran’s economic cycle, the spokesman said, adding that those resources are different from the frozen Iranian assets in Japan, Iraq and elsewhere.

Last week, President Hassan Rouhani said Iran has stepped up efforts to use its foreign currency reserve assets frozen in other countries despite the US pressures.

Governor of the Central Bank of Iran Abdolnasser Hemmati said earlier this month that his negotiations with the Iraqi officials have yielded “positive” results, as the Arab country has given its approval to the release of Iran’s frozen assets for the purchase of basic commodities.

Speaking in the sidelines of the cabinet session of Wednesday, Mahmoud Vaezi spoke about the recent status of Iran’s frozen assets which are blocked by South Korea due to the US sanctions.

“We discussed the issue with the Korean authorities, he said, “Also, preparations for legal action have already begun, and we are witnessing that the Koreans are showing some green lights for fulfilling their obligation in this regard.”

He also stressed that however, if South Korea doesn’t take practical and necessary measures in terms of unblocking Iran’s money, then the Islamic Republic of Iran will adopt its decisions.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he called the Iran-China 25-years comprehensive document as a significant one, adding, “Iran-China relations have been expanded and deepened in various political and economic sectors, and this document leads us to purposefully plan for the activities of different organs of the country in different fields.”

Vaezi also told reporters that the Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad as well as a delegation of an economic team will travel to China in the near future to discuss some issues in person.

Iran is negotiating with other countries and will file a lawsuit if necessary, Zarif said in a recent interview referring to the measures taken by the Foreign Ministry to unblock Tehran’s assets in other countries, Mehr News Agency reported on Monday.

He added there are other ways to return the frozen money such as bartering or purchasing goods from other countries.

Zarif further noted that the Iranian Foreign Ministry has successfully unblocked some of the frozen assets from a number of countries so far.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, before the Trump administration last year reimposed penalties on Iran’s crude sales, South Korea is about seven billion dollars in arrears for oil imports from Iran.

Ira has previously warned South Korea that Tehran will file a complaint concerning its frozen assets against South Korean banks in the international courts of justice.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on July 29 that Tehran will pursue a complaint concerning its frozen assets against South Korean banks in the international courts of justice.

Reacting to an article that appeared on one of the Iranian newspapers, the ministry referred to some key points in a statement to enlighten the public opinion, Mehr News Agency (MNA) reported.

“No telephone calls have been made by the spokesperson of the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Seoul and the claim is basically false,” said the five-point statement.

It added that the Iranian envoy to South Korea had met with the general manager of the Middle East Affairs at the South Korean foreign ministry and the previous remarks made by the head of the Central Bank of Iran was not mentioned in the meeting at all.

Following the meeting of the Iranian ambassador with the senior official at the South Korea’s foreign ministry, the Foreign Ministry of Iran issued a statement on July 21 rejecting “unfounded reports” by the official News Agency of South Korea, Yonhap, in which the news agency had claimed the Iranian ambassador was “summoned” to the South Korean foreign ministry.

Unfortunately, the South Korea’s Yonhap news agency in an “unprofessional move has released a piece of unfounded news. The Iranian ambassador “has not been summoned” by the Foreign Ministry of the host country “but has been invited,” the statement stressed.

It concluded by saying that over the past two years, accessing to the financial resources of the Central Bank of Iran in South Korea has been the main topic discussed by the officials of the two countries. In addition to receiving the country’s special envoy, many meetings have been held with the Korean officials both in Tehran and Seoul. Obviously, the nature of the duties of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires that it should not disclose all its measures. According to its inherent duties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs mainly facilitates foreign relations including economic relations with other countries.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Abbas Mousavi had earlier said in an interview that Tehran could sue Seoul as they refrain from paying off their oil debts to Tehran.

Earlier last week, Mousavi said Tehran has already given an official warning to Seoul over the frozen assets.

Iranian authorities have been pressing South Korea to release between $6.5 billion and $9 billion in frozen funds so that Tehran could use them for purchase of basic goods.

South Korea is citing the US sanctions as an excuse for not releasing Iran’s money.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A top Iranian lawmaker on Friday warned South Korea about its “unacceptable” and “unjustifiable” move to block the Islamic Republic’s oil money.

Parliament Vice-Speaker Amir-Hossein Qazizadeh Hashemi said it is a source of “regret and surprise” that the government of South Korea has blocked Iran’s oil money under the US pressure.

“The freezing of Iran’s assets by South Korea shows that this country does not adhere to any ethical and legal principles and violates the rights of a nation due to the pressure of a bullying government,” Hashemi said, referring to the United States.

Iranian authorities have been pressing South Korea to release between $6.5 billion and $9 billion in frozen funds so that Tehran could use them for the purchase of basic goods.

Hashemi slammed Seoul’s “rude” behavior and urged the Iranian Foreign Ministry to actively pursue the return of the oil money.

“We must do our utmost to free our assets, especially in South Korea, and spare no effort in doing so,” he said.

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said Tehran has already given an official warning to Seoul over the frozen assets.

South Korea cites the US sanctions as an excuse for not releasing Iran’s money, Mousavi told a press briefing.

However, he added, relations between South Korea and the US have nothing to do with Iran.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told a meeting with Iranian parliamentarians that countries like South Korea have not responded positively to Iran’s repeated requests for release of funds that have reportedly been blocked because of the US pressure.

“Some countries like Oman and China have acted positively on the return of these funds but South Korea has not taken any significant action in this regard,” said Zarif, according to remarks published by Iranian Parliament’s news service.

Zarif said the South Korean government claims it has “certain problems” in transferring the money it owes to Iran mainly because of the US sanctions.

“On the one hand, we are negotiating for the return of the blocked funds and on the other, there have been some proper legal actions,” said the top Iranian diplomat without elaborating on what legal path Iran has taken to secure the release of funds.

Business sources said last week that Seoul had agreed to allow Iran to use part of the funds for purchases of drugs and medical equipment.

Iran is struggling to return the funds frozen by foreign banks amid a shortage of hard currency in the country which has been contending with the coronavirus pandemic over the past months.

Press TV contributed to this story.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that the Iranian government is determined to unblock the country’s frozen assets held abroad.

He made the remarks in the economic committee of the administration.

“Foreign policy officials and those from the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) are doing their best to unblock Iran’s frozen assets through diplomacy,” Rouhani said.

The Iranian President described that the measure is taken to protect the domestic forex market from probable fluctuations.

Rouhani’s today remarks came while on June 12, he called on Governor of the CBI Abdolnaser Hemmati to push South Korea to release billions of dollars of Iran’s oil-export revenues.

Hemmati had earlier called on South Korean banks to release Iran’s oil money frozen under US pressure, warning that the Islamic Republic reserves the right to take legal action under international law.

Iran could launch legal action to gain access to the funds, he said, without naming the lenders in question.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry says South Korea is about $7 billion in arrears for oil exported before the Trump administration last year reimposed penalties on Iran’s crude sales.

Hemmati announced back in early April that 1.6 billion dollars of Iran’s assets held abroad were released.
