TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran and Tajikistan have resumed trade cooperation after a long hiatus, said the vice president of Iran-Tajikistan Chamber of Commerce noting that traders of the two countries are now cooperating well, which indicates the progress of trade relations.

Speaking to Iran Daily in an exclusive interview, Kazem Shirdel added that Tehran-Dushanbe relations thawed after almost four years, and in June 2019, Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin in a visit to Tehran invited Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to attend the fifth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held on June 15, 2019.

The visiting Tajik foreign minister also called for the expansion of cooperation in different fields between Iran and Tajikistan, said Shirdel adding that President Rouhani’s visit to Tajikistan opened a new chapter in the two sides’ relations.

The official also said the political problem which had soured relations between Tehran and Dushanbe was resolved following visits by Rouhani and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to the Central Asian country.

Shirdel went on to say that the US and Iran’s enemies in the region are trying to spend a lot of money to stir up the mind of Tajik society against Iran and disrupt relations between the two nations.

Following the coronavirus outbreak, Turkmenistan closed Iran-Turkmenistan border crossings which has resulted in a halt in Iran’s exports of goods to Central Asian countries including Tajikistan, he said.

“So we export our goods to Uzbekistan, and then reexport to Tajikistan,” he said, “It is not easy to announce the statics of exports to Tajikistan, but we can say that 60 percent of the goods loaded to Uzbekistan are eventually exported to Tajikistan.”

Pointing to the boost of trade between Iran and Tajikistan during recent two years, Shirdel said Tajik traders have good cooperation with Iranian counterparts despite US sanctions.

It is about two months that rail trade has resumed, he said noting that Iranian traders have to spend an extra charge of $1,000-$1,200 for each wagon for reexport of goods to Tajikistan via Uzbekistan.

Raw materials, granules, tile, decorative stones, adhesives and materials for home appliances as well as plastic rolls are among the main exported commodities to Tajikistan, he added.

Addressing a Sunday session of the Administration’s Economic Coordination Headquarters, Rouhani was briefed on the latest status of trade exchanges and commercial interaction with neighbors.

Highlighting the “strategic significance” of relations with the neighbors, the president ordered the immediate formation of a task force and committee comprising the organizations involved in trade interaction with the neighbors.

The president urged that the committee should work in a united and integrated manner to resolve the problems in trade with the neighbors and raise the level of trade exchanges.

The Iranian organizations in charge are duty bound to remove the obstacles to economic and trade cooperation with the neighboring states as a priority, he added.

In remarks in September, Rouhani described the promotion of economic cooperation with neighbors as a main priority in Tehran’s foreign policy agenda.

One of Iran’s main priorities is to strengthen strategic relations with neighboring states, particularly in the economic and trade arena, the president noted, adding that historical and cultural bonds among regional nations allow for enhanced cooperation that would consequently serve the common interests of regional governments and nations.

Foreign relations cover a much broader prospect than foreign policy, Rouhani stated, saying all Iranian ministries should take the opportunities to establish and broaden foreign relations.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Venezuela denounced Washington’s latest sanctions on Caracas and Tehran as an act of “aggression,” saying such “arrogant” actions cannot prevent the South American country from exercising its right to forge economic trades with Iran or any other state.

In a statement released, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said “this new (American) action against multilateralism confirms that the ruling elite of the United States has no respect whatsoever for joint decisions necessary to preserve international peace and security”, Press TV reported on Tuesday.

On Monday, the administration of US President Donald Trump imposed a raft of new sanctions on the Iranian Defense Ministry and individuals with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, claiming it is enforcing a UN arms embargo on Tehran.

The latest sanctions target 27 Iranian entities and people in Iran’s nuclear, missile and conventional arms sectors.

Announcing the anti-Iran measures, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also declared sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, accusing him of flouting the UN arms embargo on Iran.

Washington claimed Trump had issued the executive order with the authority of the UN since the US had declared Iran in breach of the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

This is while both UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the vast majority of the 15-strong UN Security Council have insisted that the US does not have the legal power to take those steps after it unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018.

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry further said “no intimidating and arrogant action by the US government will prevent it from exercising its sovereign right to establish economic and commercial relations freely with the Islamic Republic of Iran and with any state.”

It said the US sanctions against Maduro are “another attempt to ignore the institutionality of the United Nations,” particularly the Security Council.

“Venezuela rejects and condemns before the international community the new aggression by the US government, which has announced unilateral sanctions against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro without any grounds as part of an ongoing campaign of aggression against Iran, Venezuela and the entire UN multilateral system,” it said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A third round of discussions on signing a preferential trade agreement (PTA) between Iran and Malaysia have shown a progress on Wednesday during a meeting held via a video conference call, said a senior official from Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization.

Anvar Kamrani said the two sides had discussed a main draft of the potential trade deal as well as issues related to the list of goods that would be subject to lower tariffs, Press TV wrote.

“It was agreed in this meeting that the lists proposed by the two sides be prepared based on national tariffs of the two countries and exchanged until October 13,” said Kamrani.

He added the trade deal could begin to be implemented once Iran and Malaysia agree on the preferential trade tariffs and the final list of the goods.

Iran has opted for an East-leaning trade policy in recent years as the country has faced growing economic pressure from Western countries.

That comes as unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States have caused a boom in Iran’s trade with countries in the region as well as those in Asia and South East Asia.

Iran signed an agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union last November to allow trade on lower tariffs. The deal has enabled Iran to significantly increase the value and volume of goods exported to countries like Russia.

Talks have been underway between Iran and countries like India and Pakistan for a PTA while search is going on for other avenues to ease Iran’s access to major markets around the world.

In a videoconference with Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade Umurzakov Sardor Uktamovich on Saturday, Mohammad Nahavandian said the ties between Iran and Uzbekistan have been growing rapidly in various fields.

The trade exchanges between Iran and Uzbekistan rose by 40 percent in 2019, Nahavandian said, stressing that such progress would benefit the interests of the two nations and the region.

He further called for efforts to compensate for a decline in economic interaction after the outbreak of the coronavirus, saying the two nations can resort to various options to make up for the decrease.

The vice president also noted that Iranian experts are prepared to provide Uzbekistan with technical and engineering services.

For his part, the Uzbek minister described Iran as a major partner of his country, saying Tashkent has plans to strengthen ties with Tehran in the transportation industry.

The two sides agreed on the launch of talks about the extension of a preferential trade agreement, and decided to hold Iran-Uzbekistan Joint Commission in the second half of 2020 in Tehran.

In a telephone conversation in May, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoyev discussed ways to enhance the bilateral ties and cooperation amid the global fight against the COVID-19 crisis.

They also discussed the ways to boost the bilateral relations between Iran and Uzbekistan in various fields, including politics, economy, trade, transportation, and communications.

In a message to his Nicaraguan counterpart Jose Daniel Ortega Saavedra on Sunday, Rouhani congratulated the Latin American nation and government on the 41st anniversary of the victory of the Sandinista Revolution.

“Highlighting the Islamic Republic of Iran’s great interest in the enhancement of ties with the Republic of Nicaragua and the fulfillment of the interests of people of the two friendly and brotherly nations, I hope we continue to witness the promotion of bilateral cooperation with mutual efforts,” the Iranian president added.

Every year on July 19, people of Nicaragua gather at Plaza La Fe in capital Managua to commemorate the fall of the militarized Somaza family dictatorship. This family ruled the country in a harsh and unscrupulous way for more than four decades. The dynasty was overthrown after the National Sandinista Revolution, which took place when people from all sectors – workers, businessmen, peasants, students, and guerrillas – joined forces and finally defeated the Somoza dynasty and the National Guard on July 19, 1979.

The symbol and direct precedent of the revolution is the struggle of General Augusto C. Sandino (1895-1934), a national hero who fought with bravery, supported by an army formed by farmers and workers.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – An Indian newspaper said Iran has decided to remove India from a partnership on a key railway project that is being constructed in southeastern Iran along the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Hindu said in a report that Iran is now going on with the construction of the Chabahar-Zahedan railway on its own, despite the fact that the project was supposed to benefit from India’s supply of investment and equipment, Press TV reported.

The report said recurrent delays by India in bringing in the required investment and the equipment needed to build the rail line finally caused Iran to drop the partnership.

Iran began track-laying for the 610-kilometer railway last week after authorities said they have the finances required to finish the project until the end of the current Iranian fiscal year in March 2021.

Iran has tapped into its sovereign wealth fund to draw more than €300 million for the project, according to statements by Iranian officials in the past.

India has been a major contributor to the plans to develop Chabahar, Iran’s sole ocean port on the Sea of Oman and where India seeks to build terminals and port installations to ease its trade access to Afghanistan and other landlocked countries in the Central Asia region.

New Delhi has been hesitant to become actively involved in the Chabahar-Zahedan project mainly because of the threat of US sanctions.

The report by Hindu newspaper reiterated that India has obtained the required waivers from US sanctions to contribute to the construction of the rail line.

However, it said that Indian Railways Construction Ltd. (IRCON) has failed to find equipment suppliers and partners who are not fearful of being targeted by US sanctions four years after it signed an agreement with Iran to become involved in the project.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has traveled to Turkey for talks to resume trade relations affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Turkey on Sunday evening, Zarif said bilateral economic trade and regional issues are among the main topics to be discussed during his visit.

“I deemed it necessary to pay a visit to Turkey (for talks) in relation to the bilateral issues, resumption of economic relations that have faced problems due to the coronavirus, energy cooperation, and regional issues,” he said.

Hailing the close interaction between Tehran and Ankara, Zarif stressed the need for constant consultations in various fields.

“Relations with neighbors is a foreign policy priority for us and our region, that’s why I paid a visit to Syria after the new conditions of the coronavirus outbreak, and I’m so glad now to visit Turkey,” the Iranian foreign minister added.

In a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in April, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hailed the Iranian government and nation’s “valuable” coronavirus fight despite the problems they are facing, stressing that trade between the two countries should continue in accordance with health guidelines and that officials must work toward that aim.

In early May, an Iranian deputy interior minister said Tehran has provided Ankara with a draft proposal for the health protocols on the reopening of the common border crossings which have been shut after the coronavirus outbreak, and on the resumption of bilateral trade exchanges.
