Iranian teams ready to host group stage

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Esteghlal, Persepolis, Foolad, and Tractor, who will represent Iran in the new season of the AFC Champions League, have sent their request to host their group stage matches.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League will be played in centralized group stages in the 2021 season due to coronavirus concerns. The AFC Champions League will be held in the West and East Regions.

With the continued support of the Member Associations and participating clubs, the AFC has agreed that the ACL Group Stage West Region matches will be scheduled between April 14-30 while the East Region is planned for April 21-May 7, 2021.

Nidal Bahran, the official spokesman for the Asian Football Confederation, has said the teams can send their request to host the group stage until Feb. 15.

“The AFC will provide support in the amount of $550,000 for hosting each group. The last two matches of each group should be held simultaneously,” he said.

The 2020 AFC Champions League 2020 group stages as well quarterfinals, semifinals, and final were held in Doha, Qatar. The 2021 AFC Champions League will see 40 teams in the group stage – an increase of eight – with one additional group each in the East and West Zones.

Chimba Stays in Foolad

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Luciano Pereira Mendes, also known as Chimba, extended his contract with Iranian football team Foolad for one more year.

Chimba helped the Ahvaz-based football club book a place in next year’s AFC Champions League qualifying round play-offs.

The Brazilian forward joined Foolad in 2012 but left the team for Sepahan two years later. The 36-year-old player joined Gostaresh in 2016 and was signed by Sanat Naft a year later.

Chimba returned to Foolad in 2018 and has extended his contract with the team for one more year.

Foolad, headed by ex-Iran captain Javad Nekounam, finished in third place in the Iran Professional League last season.

IPL: Padideh Suffers Late Defeat to Foolad

Luciano Pereira opened the IPL leader’s goal in the injury time in Mashhad.

In Isfahan, Sepahan and Naft Masjed Soleyman played out a goalless draw.

Tractor defeated Gol Gohar 1-0 thanks to Amin Pourali’s own goal in Tabriz.

Sanat Naft drew 1-1 with Zob Ahan, Paykan humiliated Machine Sazi 6-2, Pars Jonoubi defeated Saipa 3-2 and Nassaji emerged 2-0 victorious over Shahin Bushehr.

On Sunday, Esteghlal will play Persepolis in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

Iran Professional League: Foolad Held by 10-Man Sanat Naft

Foolad football team was held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Sanat Naft in Iran Professional League (IPL) on Saturday.

In the match held in Ahvaz’s Ghadir Stadium, Brazilian striker Luciano Pereira Mendes gave a lead visiting team Sanat Naft just 10 minutes into the match.

Sanat Naft went down to 10 men in the 74th minute when Morteza Asadi was shown his second yellow card.

With one minute remaining, Rahim Zahivi equalized the match.

Foolad sits second place with 37 points, 14 points behind IPL leader Persepolis.

Esteghlal held by Foolad at Iran Professional League

Esteghlal football team were held to a 0-0 draw by Foolad in Iran Professional League (IPL) on Friday.

It was the Blues’ first match under the guidance of German coach Winfried Schaefer.

The Iranian popular team failed to create scoring chances as the team have one just two matches in their nine previous matches.

Esteghlal are 12th in the table and Foolad sit fifth.

Furthermore, IPL pacesetters Pars Jonoubi Jam drea 1-1 with Tractor Sazi, Sepahan defeated Siahjamegan 2-0, Padideh drew 2-2 with Zob Ahan, Saipa was held to a 1-1 draw by Sepidrood Rasht and Sanat Naft Abadan edged past Naft Tehran 1-0.

On Thursday, Persepolis defeated Esteghlal Khuzestan 3-1 and Paykan beat Gostaresh Foolad 1-0.
