TEHRAN (Iran News) – Sport not a ring of hatred. In a brief note, President of Iran National Olympic Committee Seyed Reza Salehi Amiri highlights the important role of sport as a tool to expand peace and friendship.

One of the functions of sport as part of public diplomacy is to spread peace and friendship among nations. Unlike political diplomacy, which is based on the power, competition, and interests of states, in public and cultural diplomacy, it is the nations which matter. The actors in this diplomacy are not politicians and statesmen, but elites, athletes, and artists.

Traveling to Saudi Arabia and playing in Riyadh was not the choice of Foolad Khuzestan team, and in the case of hosting the Asian Champions League, the rights of this team and other Iranian clubs were ignored. However, the next events, including the reception given by the Saudi football officials to the Foolad Khuzestan delegation should be considered auspicious.

The fact that Saudi football managers meritoriously welcomed members of an Iranian team at Riyadh airport raises hopes that after nearly five years, tensions between the two nations will ease and be replaced by friendship and peace. Governments change over time, politicians shift, and these shifts impact policies, but cultural diplomacy endures.

The two nations of Iran and Saudi Arabia cannot eternally live in an atmosphere of tension and conflict. Today we have a political difference with Saudi Arabia. In recent years, tensions have sometimes reached the highest level, but we cannot ignore the fact that the two nations have much in common culturally. At the same time, we should not forget that during the time of the late Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani and King (Amir) Abdullah, the two countries had friendly and constructive relations. Repeating the experience can help bring peace and tranquility to the region.

The question may be asked whether the resumption of sports relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia can also affect political relations? My answer to this question is definitely yes. Take a look at the photos posted by Iranian and Saudi users on social media since yesterday. The images tell us that hostility and nervousness have given way to bouquets and smiles. Let’s not forget that in the last 5 years that our relations with Saudi Arabia have been strained, we have never sought to involve politics in sports. We have never sought face-to-face games with Saudi athletes on neutral fields. We have repeatedly emphasized that we will host our competitors in complete security, away from political excitement, and in a fair atmosphere.

Iran has always protested against the violation of its athletes’ rights in international arenas. Just a few weeks ago, we denounced the reckless behavior of the Asian Football Confederation in depriving Iranian national football team of hosting and gifting it to Bahrain, but at the same time, we stressed that despite the propaganda, we are ready to host all contenders, including Bahrain, in a safe and peaceful atmosphere. Our position is respect and friendship based on observing mutual rights. In any case, with the visit of Foolad Khuzestan team to Saudi Arabia, Iranian sports took the first step to restore friendly relations between the two nations. We expect Saudi teams to travel to Iran in a similar manner, regardless of political affiliation. The nations of our region have deep religious, cultural and civilizational commonalities. With rationality and relying on these commonalities, we can once again introduce the image of the great Islamic civilization to the world. The Iranian nation is always open to embrace the neighboring nations.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Farhad Majidi and Foolad Khuzestan head coach Javad Nekounam are top two contenders to take charge at the Persian Gulf Pro League side Esteghlal, sources said on Saturday.

Of the 16 Iranian league teams, Esteghlal is the only side yet to know its head coach for next season.

The ongoing saga of the Tehran-based Blues’ managerial role entered a new phase last Wednesday after CEO Ahmad Sa’adatmand was removed from his job by the club’s board of directors.

Hours before his dismissal, Sa’adatmand had announced that Esteghlal had reached an agreement with former Werder Bremen and Hertha Berlin manager Alexander Nouri over the team’s vacant job.

Sports newspaper Iran Varzeshi on Saturday wrote that Nekounam – a former midfielder of the Blues – is the top candidate to replace caretaker manager Majid Namjoo Motlaq, who steered his team to a last-16 finish at the AFC Champions League in Qatar.

According to the paper, Esteghlal will have to activate the manager’s release clause – reportedly some $85,000 – before signing the 39-year-old Iranian.

Nekounam stole the headlines after leading Foolad to the third spot in the Iranian league last season, securing a place for the southern Iranian club in the next edition of the Asian elite club competition.

However, Foolad CEO Saeid Azari ruled out any rumors regarding Nekounam’s departure on Saturday, insisting that the ex-Iran skipper will stay with Foolad until the end of next league campaign.

Majidi, meanwhile, is tipped to resume his job, according to Mehr News Agency.

He stepped down from his role in September following a 3-2 defeat against Tractor in the Hazfi Cup final.

He was heavily critical of Sa’adatmand at the time, slamming his decision to travel to Italy to negotiate a contract with Majidi’s Italian predecessor Andrea Stramaccioni on the eve of the Hazfi Cup semifinal tie against archrival Persepolis in late August – which the Blues won in the shootouts.

Majidi had a decent record during his seven-month spell at Esteghlal, which finished as runner-up in the league.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The final day of the Persian Gulf Pro League season saw Foolad Khuzestan book a place in next year’s AFC Champions League (ACL) as a 1-0 home victory over Tractor on Thursday gave Javad Nekounam’s men a well-deserved third-spot finish.

Aref Aqasi scored the all-important winner in the seventh minute as the southern Iranian club – fifth in the table prior to the game – overtook Tractor and Sepahan – which was held to a 1-1 draw at Paykan – for the final berth in the Asian elite club competition.

Tractor, however, has a second chance of securing a place in the Champions League through Hazfi Cup, where the Tabriz-based side takes on Naft Masjed Soleyman in the semifinals on Tuesday, with archrivals Persepolis and Esteghlal playing the other last-four tie.

Should either one of Persepolis, Esteghlal, or Tractor win the cup, Saket Elhami’s side will be handed an ACL place.

Meanwhile, a 1-0 defeat against Naft Masjed Soleyman meant that Pars Jonoubi Jam joined other Bushehr-based club Shahin Shahrdari in relegation to the Iranian football second tier.

Omid Singh scored in the 88th-minute to dash former club’s slight hope of survival.

The result also secured Paykan and Saipa – which both failed to win on the final day – a place in next season’s top flight.

Ebrahim Sadeqi’s Saipa was beaten 3-0 at the hands of champion Persepolis, courtesy of goals by Vahid Amiri, Christian Osaguona, and Ali Alipour.

The victory meant that Yahya Golmohammadi’s men, in a season that they clinched a record-fourth consecutive title, also set a new record for most wins in a season (21).

The Reds also equaled the highest points-tally of a single campaign (67), a figure which only Sepahan had reached in the 18-team 2011-12 season.

Elsewhere, Cheick Diabaté put a fitting end to his impressive debut season by scoring a brace in Esteghlal’s 4-1 win at Shahin, helping Farhad Majidi’s Blues to a runner-up finish.

Malian striker scored 15 goals in a stellar campaign for the Golden Boot Award – finishing two goals clear of Paykan’s Shahryar Moghanlou.

According To Iran News, Cape Town City club chairman John Comitis says they have no intention of selling their players despite PSL clubs facing financial uncertainty.

Ayanda Patosi is one of the South African team’s players and currently is on loan at Iran’s Foolad Khuzestan FC from City.

The attacking midfielder recently revealed he would like to stay with the Iranian club on a permanent deal.

“But I know Patosi has been playing overseas – the benefit to him is extremely high and we wouldn’t stand in his way as long as it works for the club as well,” Comitis said.

“My intention is still to keep a very strong squad and to have a team that can compete,” he continued.
