Additionally, water was pumped out of 610 flooded houses, and food items were distributed among the flood victims, he added.

There are five deaths in Sistan-Baluchestan Province, eight deaths in Tehran, and one in Markazi province. Some 11 people, including seven people in Tehran and four in Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari, are also missing, and the search for them continues.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Flooding leaves 5 dead, injured in 7 provinces. Severe rain triggered flooding in seven provinces of the country, which have claimed three lives, and two went missing, spokesman or the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has announced.

“Relief and rescue forces provided services to 846 flood survivors,” ISNA quoted Mohammad Hassan Qousian as saying on Tuesday.

Currently, relief operations have been completed in five provinces, but continue in Qazvin and Zanjan provinces, he stated.

Over the last two years, Iran was doused with rain which was unprecedented during the past 50 years, but last year, unfortunately, the country faced drought, which shows a 40 percent decrease in rainfall.

Watershed management is a solution to strengthen the ecosystem in the face of subsequent droughts by penetrating rainfall into the ground.

Wet spell or still short of rain?

Rainfall extremes over the past three years slowly questioned the conception that Iran is experiencing a long-term drought and some of the experts announced that a wet spell will embrace the country.

So, some experts claimed that Iran has entered a period of a wet spell after experiencing dry spells over the past few decades, some others highly rejected the claim implying that the country faced a lack of rain by 50mm over the past 5 decades.

Climate disruption or global climate disruption, is the new term scientists are using to explain the extreme fluctuations that can and will occur to our weather systems as anthropogenic-caused carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases increase in our atmosphere, the oceans get warmer, and weather events go wild.

The report regrets that climate disruption will be continuing as climate change is on the rise and it calls on taking proper and effective measures to alleviate the adverse effects of climate change on the country.

In fact, experiencing two or three consecutive years of rainy days cannot ensure that drought no longer hits the country, but then it may enter a multi-year drought.

More than 200 rescue and relief groups are working in 61 counties affected by natural disasters, he noted.

The IRCS forces have provided relief for some 5,000 people, accommodating 835 ones in shelters and relocating 58 others to safe regions.

Heavy rainfalls since the start of summer have helped reduce water stress in the country, increasing the national average precipitation by three percent.

Rainfalls had decreased by 42 percent compared to the previous water year (starting September 23), but the recent rainfalls made for three percent of water shortage in the country, IRNA quoted Sadeq Ziaeian, the director of National Drought Warning and Monitoring Center, as saying.

This year, the country has experienced one of the hardest situations in terms of precipitation for the past 50 years, he noted.

Iran is ranked among the world’s arid countries with its annual precipitation levels at about one-third of the global average.

More than 200 Iranian cities and a very larger number of villages, mostly in the central and southern parts, are water-stressed.

“Over the past nine days, 10 people (6 in Kerman and 4 in Yazd) lost their lives,” he regretted.

Precipitation in Iran amounted to 127.8 millimeters from the beginning of the current water year (September 22, 2020) until April 24, which demonstrates a 54 percent decline compared to the same period last [Iranian calendar] year.

In comparison with the long-term average (52 years), rainfall dropped by 41 percent over the aforementioned period, according to the data released by the Ministry of Energy.

Over the last two years, Iran was doused with rain which was unprecedented during the past 50 years, but last year, unfortunately, the country faced drought, which shows a 40 percent decrease in rainfall, he explained.

In the province of Ma’arib east of the capital city of Yemen, 19 children were among 30 people killed by the flash floods, AFP reported.

In the province’s displaced person camps, 1,340 families saw their tents and belongings swept away.

In Lahij province, seven people drowned when their vehicle was swept downstream.

Another four people were killed on the road connecting the southern provinces of Hadramawt and Shabwa, the report added.

The houses in Yemen’s the UNESCO-listed Old City of Sana’a are also collapsing due to heavy rains, as months of floods and storms assail a country already reeling from war, food shortages, and disease.

The distinctive brown and white mud-brick houses of Sana’a’s historic neighborhoods, which date from before the 11th century, have long been under threat from war and neglect.

The destruction has dealt a new blow to a country already in the grips of what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis after years of Saudi-led war against the Arab country.

Five years of war have killed more than 100,000 people, left 80 percent of the population reliant on aid, and pushed millions to the brink of famine.

In addition, and on top of the new coronavirus that is believed to be spreading largely undetected, heavy rains spread diseases like cholera, dengue fever, and malaria.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Pounding rain that already caused deadly floods in southern Japan was moving northeast Wednesday, battering large areas of Japan’s main island, swelling more rivers, triggering mudslides, and destroying houses and roads. At least 58 people have died in several days of flooding.

Parts of Nagano and Gifu, including areas known for scenic mountain trails and hot springs, were flooded by massive downpours.

Footage on NHK television showed a swollen river gouging into the embankment, destroying a highway, while in the city of Gero, the rising river was flowing just below a bridge.

Flooding and mudslides disrupted parts of the main road connecting Kamikochi and Matsumoto, two main tourist destinations in Nagano, stranding hundreds of residents and visitors, though they are believed to have safely evacuated. In neighboring Gifu, hundreds of others were also isolated in the hot springs town of Gero and Ontake.

In another mountainous scenic town of Takayama, several houses were hit by a mudslide, their residents all safely rescued.

As of Wednesday morning, the death toll from the heavy rains starting over the weekend had risen to 58, most of them from the hardest-hit Kumamoto prefecture. Four others were found in Fukuoka, another prefecture on Kyushu, Japan’s third-largest island.

At the peak, as many as 3.6 million people were advised to evacuate, although it wasn’t mandatory and the number who took shelter was not known. About half of the advisories have been lifted by Wednesday afternoon.

In places where rain had subsided, residents were busy cleaning up their homes and workplaces.

In Gero, a man washed down mud at the entrance of his riverside house despite the evacuation advisory. “I was told to run away and my neighbors all went, but I stayed,” he said. “I didn’t want my house to be washed away in my absence.”

In Oita, teachers at a nursery school were wiping the floor and drying the wet furniture. “I hope we can return to normal life as soon as possible,” Principal Yuko Kitaguchi told NHK.

Though the rains were causing fresh flooding threats in central Japan, flooding was still affecting the southern region. And search and rescue operations continued in Kumamoto, where 14 people are still missing.

Tens of thousands of army troops, police, and other rescue workers mobilized from around the country to assist, and the rescue operations have been hampered by the rains, flooding, mudslides, and disrupted communications.

In Kagoshima, a pickup truck was hit by a mudslide and fell into the ocean, but the driver was airlifted out with a head injury, according to Fuji Television. In another town in Oita, two brothers in their 80s were dug up alive by rescuers after a mudslide smashed into their hillside house, NHK said.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga urged residents to use caution. “Disasters may happen even with little rain where grounds have loosened from previous rainfalls,” he said, AP reported.

Suga pledged continuing search and rescue efforts, as well as emergency funds for the affected areas.

Japan is at high risk of heavy rain in early summer when wet and warm air from the East China Sea flows into a seasonal rain front above the country. In July 2018, more than 200 people, about half of them in Hiroshima, died from heavy rain and flooding in southwestern Japan.

In a statement on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi offered sympathy to the Japanese government, people and families of victims of flooding and landslide that have killed tens of people and caused heavy damages.

The death toll from floods and landslides unleashed by torrential rains on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu has risen to 20, with 14 people missing, according to public broadcaster NHK.

More heavy rain was forecast after Saturday’s deadly deluge in the Kumamoto prefecture, in what has become Japan’s worst natural disaster since Typhoon Hagibis in October last year left about 90 people dead.

Deep floodwaters and the risk of more mudslides hampered search and rescue operations throughout Sunday, including at a care home where more than a dozen people have died and scores were still stranded.

Helicopters and boats have been used as more than 40,000 defense troops, the coast guard and fire brigades continue efforts to rescue people from their homes.
