12,000 Flights Canceled During War and Ceasefire

TEHRAN (Iran News) In an interview with ILNA, Hamidreza Sanaei, Deputy for Aviation and International Affairs at the Civil Aviation Organization, provided an update on the current status of international flights at Imam Khomeini International Airport. He stated:

“Today, there will be 18 inbound flights to Imam Khomeini Airport, and an equal number of outbound flights will operate from this airport.”

Addressing concerns over the pricing of international flight tickets—which are not subject to regulated price ranges—Sanaei said:

“Yesterday, a meeting was held with airline executives to discuss price controls. The airlines themselves emphasized that even for international flights not covered by mandatory pricing, there should not be significant price increases.”

However, he pointed out that foreign carriers operating flights to Iran set their ticket prices purely based on supply and demand, and are not subject to any domestic pricing regulations.

Sanaei continued: “Despite the heavy financial losses during this period, domestic airlines have insisted that there will be no abnormal price hikes for international flight tickets.”

As a key measure to help keep ticket prices reasonable, Sanaei said the organization has been actively issuing flight permits to multiple foreign and domestic airlines:

“From the very first day of resuming international flights, we negotiated with an Arab-Iranian carrier to quickly return to Iranian routes, and we have already granted permission for 9 daily flights by this airline. By increasing the number of authorized flights, we aim to break price surges.”

He noted that the number of international routes is gradually increasing: “Currently, flights to Dubai and Turkey are operational, and flights to China and Oman will resume soon. Over time, all international routes will reopen, and we will issue permits for domestic airlines to operate on these routes without restrictions.”

Regarding the financial impact on airlines from canceled flights, Sanaei said: “The damages have been reported. During the period of war and ceasefire, about 12,000 flights were canceled. A precise calculation of financial losses is underway, and an initial report has been submitted to the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.”

He added that assistance to airlines facing war-related losses is being pursued through decisions by the Cabinet: “The only legal basis we currently have is Article 63 of the Law on Government Revenue Collection, which states that airport charges can be waived during wartime. Beyond that, there are generally no permanent support provisions for such circumstances.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) The flights are scheduled to begin on January 31, operating from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport every Monday and Friday.

Iran Airtour’s CEO, Reza Mousavi, met with Imam Khomeini Airport and law enforcement officials on Monday to discuss ways to improve coordination between various operational departments and ensure seamless operations for the route.

Mousavi said he was optimistic that flights to other European destinations would soon resume. “We hope that other European flights will be established in the near future.”

The head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, Hossein Pourfarzaneh, previously said that the Paris-Tehran route would be re-established with the launch of Iran Airtour’s flights.

Direct flights to Europe are resuming more than three months after the suspension of Iran Air’s European routes due to EU sanctions.

Iran’s aviation industry has suffered years of Western sanctions that prevent the country from purchasing new aircraft and spare parts.

TEHRAN (Iran News) Pourfarzaneh made the announcement during a news conference in Tehran on Monday, saying that the first flight will be carried out from Tehran to Paris on February 31.

The Tehran-Paris flight is set to be carried out by Iranian private airline, Iran Airtour Airlines, the official said.

Another Iranian airline, Qeshm Air, will also carry out flights to “two European destinations”, he further said, but added that details will be announced later.

Flights between Iran and Europe were suspended in mid-October 2024 after the EU imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic over allegations that it had sent drones to Russia for use in the Ukraine war. Iran vehemently denied the allegations.

TEHRAN (Iran News) Since Iran and Saudi Arabia restored their political relations in March 2023, the development of tourism ties between the two regional economic powerhouses has been the focus of policymakers in Tehran and Riyadh.

In October 2023, the Saudi minister of tourism proposed an agreement to bolster cooperation in the tourism sector, highlighting a desire for a greater influx of Iranian tourists to Saudi Arabia while also encouraging Saudi nationals to visit the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s flagship airline, Iran Air, resumed flights between Mashhad and Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on December 31 after a nine-year hiatus. The airline was scheduled to operate two weekly flights on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, in response to strong consumer demands, Iran Air announced it was doubling the capacity of flights on this route.

Jaffar Yazarloo, spokesman for the Civil Aviation Organization, confirmed to IRNA on Sunday that the organization has received a formal request from a Saudi airline to establish scheduled flights between various destinations in Iran and Saudi Arabia.

He said the organization would welcome an increase in flights from Saudi Arabia to Iran.

Iran Suspends Flights to Syria Until January 22

TEHRAN (Iran News) Pourfarzaneh emphasized the importance of the Chicago Convention, an international agreement aimed at enabling countries to benefit from global aviation. As a long-standing signatory, Iran remains committed to this treaty, which mandates member states to prioritize flight safety and security. To achieve these standards, Iran focuses on both software and hardware aspects, encompassing personnel training, fleet maintenance, and modernization.

The CAO head underlined the role of a specialized unit in ensuring flight security. This unit handles inspections and quality control, which are integral to maintaining operational standards. Pourfarzaneh acknowledged that political challenges have added unique responsibilities for Iran, including fostering domestic design and manufacturing capabilities—a stark contrast to many countries that rely on international giants like Boeing and Airbus.

Pourfarzaneh lamented the financial constraints facing Iran’s aviation sector, particularly the inability to access global financing and insurance models. He warned that neglecting this industry could lead to its collapse, as aviation is not merely a luxury but a cornerstone of national development. Each decommissioned aircraft, he noted, disrupts connectivity within the country and to the rest of the world.

In response to these challenges, the CAO has prioritized localized production and repair. While international collaborations were robust before the revolution, sanctions have compelled Iran to address these issues domestically. Despite these hurdles, Pourfarzaneh reaffirmed the commitment to maintaining safe and secure flights.

Sanctions imposed on Iran, particularly by the European Union, have severely impacted the aviation sector. Pourfarzaneh criticized these measures for hindering access to critical supplies like medicines, calling them a violation of human rights and the Chicago Convention. Following these sanctions, Iran filed formal complaints against the entities responsible.

He highlighted that over 400 knowledge-based companies are now actively working in aircraft maintenance and parts manufacturing within Iran. While the CAO aims to upgrade its fleet with modern aircraft from global manufacturers, domestic production remains a contingency plan should international avenues remain blocked.

Pourfarzaneh addressed questions about the government’s claim to have imported 100 aircraft during the current administration’s three years in office. He clarified that while 100 airframes, including light planes, heavy aircraft, and helicopters, were acquired, 75 of these were passenger planes. Out of these, 45 are currently operational. Some were procured for spare parts, while others require several months of checks before becoming flight-ready.

Discussing international flight routes, Pourfarzaneh announced that flights to Syria have been suspended until January 22, pending approval from Syrian authorities. However, flights to Lebanon have resumed, and discussions are ongoing regarding potential routes to Egypt, which would require mutual agreements between the two nations.

Pourfarzaneh also noted that during periods of heightened tensions in Syria, Iranian flights continued under special permits, demonstrating the country’s commitment to maintaining connectivity despite challenges.

Despite facing numerous obstacles, Pourfarzaneh concluded that Iran remains steadfast in its efforts to preserve and grow its aviation industry. The priority is to procure aircraft from reputable international companies while simultaneously strengthening domestic capabilities to ensure the industry’s sustainability.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – National flag carrier IranAir announced it will resume flights to Germany’s Cologne as of October 30.

The airline announced the issue on Thursday, Mehr News Agency reported.

The flight, No. 729, leaves Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA) at 17:40 on Fridays every week and arrives at Cologne Bonn Airport at 21:00 local time.

On the same day another flight, number 728, will take off from Cologne Bonn Airport at 22:30 local time and will land at IKIA at 6:15 a.m. on Saturday.

IranAir operates flights to three airports in Frankfurt, Cologne and Hamburg weekly, according to the airline.

On September 20, IranAir announced it was restoring flights to Istanbul after a seven-month halt that was caused by the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Iran and other parts of the region.

IranAir said in a statement that flights to Istanbul would resume as of September 25 with Flight 719 from IKIA to Istanbul.

The airline said passengers should have had a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test 72 hours before arrival in Istanbul airport confirming they are free of coronavirus.

The airline said its certificate to fly to Istanbul had been issued “based on negotiations between the two countries of Iran and Turkey”.

Istanbul was one of IranAir’s main destinations before the pandemic hit global air travel in late February. The airline has managed to restore flights to key destinations in Europe now that restrictions meant to curb the virus have eased.

Flights to Istanbul had resumed in early July before Turkish authorities reimposed fresh bans on travel from several countries in the Middle East, including from Iran, over concerns about a second wave of the coronavirus outbreak.

The pandemic has had a deep impact on Iran’s aviation industry amid sanctions imposed by the US and allies that ban certain Iranian airlines from traveling to and above major countries.

Domestic air travel has also been impacted with authorities announcing earlier that some companies had lost about 90 percent of demand for flights to main destinations.

Kazem Jalali held a meeting with Head of Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) Alexander Neradko on Friday.

Jalali hailed the good ties between Iran and Russia in various fields, stressing the need to resume direct flights and facilitate travels of the Iranian business people and students.

Neradko, for his part, highlighted the close ties between the two sides and the efforts by the officials to boost the relations.

He said the coronavirus pandemic has mostly affected the international flights, particularly the flights operated by Russian flag carrier Aeroflot.

Of 78 international airports in Russia, only seven airports in seven provinces are now operating international flights, Neradko added.

He noted that although the decisions on the resumption of flights and the lifting of restrictions are within the purview of the Coronavirus Taskforce Headquarters in Russia, Iran’s request would be conveyed to the headquarters’ chairman, IRNA reported.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The number of foreign flights passing through the Iranian airspace increased in the past few months amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Figures released by the Iran Airports Company show that the number of passenger and cargo flights passing over the Iran airspace has grown in the fifth month of the current Iranian year (July 22-August 21) and increased to 8,431 flights, reported Fars News Agency.

The number of passing flights in the fourth month on the Iranian year (June 21-July 21) stood at 7,295.

Foreign states have resumed their flights via Iran’s airspace after a halt due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The first Tehran-Madrid direct, weekly flight, was launched on September 2 by Iran Air.

Flights between Iran and Spain were suspended due to the border closure after the coronavirus outbreak. However, no direct flights had been operated between Tehran and Madrid for 17 years.

The direct, weekly flights have been resumed following a series of actions taken by the Embassy of Iran through coordination with the Civil Aviation Organization, Iran Air and Spain’s aviation authorities.

Iran’s Ambassador in Madrid Hassan Qashqavi commented on the resumption of the Tehran-Madrid flights, saying, “Fortunately, a direct and weekly flight between Tehran and Madrid is being conducted for the first time by the Islamic Republic of Iran Airline.”

He further expressed hope that “this important step in bilateral relations would strengthen ties between the two nations and develop tourism and would also help promote mutual trade cooperation.”

The license for the weekly Tehran-Madrid flight was issued by the Spanish aviation authorities on August 11, according to a statement by the Iranian Embassy in Madrid.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Turkey’s flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THY), which had suspended its international flights due to the coronavirus outbreak, announced its new flight schedule for September.

Flights to Iran, which were suspended again on July 19, were also included in the rescheduling and will be resumed as of Sept. 1, Daily Sabah reported.

The company said in a statement Sunday that they have arranged the schedule for next month “as a result of meticulous work with national and international health authorities.”

The statement noted that customers will be offered flexible travel opportunities as it is difficult to make plans during this challenging period in which flight suspensions depend on government and company decisions according to the number of cases in relevant countries.

Customers are set to be offered unlimited changes for tickets bought for the period between March 21 and August 31, it said.

The company said that it plans to resume flights to Tehran, Tabriz, Shiraz and Mashhad in Iran as of September 1.

Meanwhile, the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIMA) announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran-Turkey Joint Chamber of Commerce for cooperation in drawing a roadmap for the expansion of trade between the two countries.

The MOU is aimed at developing trade relations between the two countries’ private sectors, mainly by exploring opportunities for boosting economic ties between the two neighbors.

Speaking at the signing ceremony on Thursday, Hesameddin Hallaj, TCCIMA deputy head for the international affairs, noted that the Tehran Chamber of Commerce has focused its efforts on developing relations with neighboring countries, adding, “Iran and Turkey have had good relations in recent years and now the Tehran Chamber of Commerce intends to put the expansion of these relations on the agenda through this memorandum.”

He further expressed hope that under the framework of this memorandum, the two sides would access information about each other’s companies, while problems in the way of the traders of the two countries will be identified and resolved.

“We are trying to draw a roadmap for the expansion of relations between the two countries by using the capacities of the Tehran Chamber and the Joint Chamber,” Hallaj stressed.
