FIVB President Graça apologizes to Iran volleyball over Chicago airport incident

The Iranian team arrived in Chicago after a 30-hour flight but was delayed for more four hours.

Iran volleyball federation immediately lodged a complaint to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) over the incident.

The VNL final round will be held in the Credit Union 1 Arena, Chicago, United States from July 10 to 14.

“On behalf of the FIVB and entire volleyball family, I would like to apologize to Iran volleyball and we are really ashamed of what has happened in Chicago airport. The FIVB worked very closely with various stakeholders including the IOC, USOC and USAV to ensure that the Iranian delegation would have a smooth entry procedure. We were shocked to find out what happened. I can assure you that the world federation will find a way to prevent “such an incident” in the future. We wish the Iranian team the success in the 2019 Volleyball Nations League,” Graça wrote in a letter sent to Iran Volleyball Federation.

Iran have been drawn with Brazil and Poland in Pool B and hosts the U.S. are pitted against Russia and France in Pool A.

The Iranian team, who are looking for the VNL first medal, will start the competition with a match against powerhouse Poland on July 11.

Team Melli will meet Brazil on July 12.

This will be the first edition of the World League or the Nations League to have the Final Round hosted in North America.

Iran come from behind to beat Portugal in VNL

Team Melli will host Australia and France at the Rezazadeh Hall in Ardabil, Iran on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Iran extended their winning run at the men’s 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League to nine matches as Igor Kolakovic’s team have already defeated Italy, Germany, China, Argentina, Japan, Canada, Poland and Russia.

Iran sit top of the table with 27 points, followed by Brazil with 22 points and one game in hands.

The competition is being held between May and July 2019 and the final round will take place in the Credit Union 1 Arena, Chicago, United States.

This is the first edition of the World League or the Nations League to have the Final Round hosted in North America.

The 16 teams compete in a round-robin format with every core team hosting a pool at least once. The teams are divided into four pools of four teams at each week and compete five weeks long, for 120 matches. The top five teams after the preliminary round join the hosts of the final round to compete in the final round.

Iran ease past Russia at Volleyball Nations League

Team Melli, who had defeated Canada (3-0) and Poland (3-2) in their first two matches, beat the defending champions in straight sets (25-20, 26-24, 25-23) at the Ghadir Hall in Urmia, West Azarbaijan province.

Iran extended their winning run at the third competition week of the men’s 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League to eight matches as Igor Kolakovic’s team had already seized seven wins against Italy, Germany, China, Argentina, Japan, Canada and Poland.

Iran just lost to Brazil 3-2 in week 2.

Amir Ghafour was Iran’s top scorer with 17.
