TEHRAN (Iran News) –The CEO of Fishery Company of Etka Organization and a member of Protein Production and Packaging Industry Employers Trade Association says Iran’s share of 212m tons of fishery products of the world is only 1.2m tons.

Speaking in a press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Mahmoud Moalem said that with having such capacities and capabilities, the country should not be affected by the sanctions and the like issues, adding that if these capacities are managed wisely, the problems will drop to its lowest amount. He noted that one of the very good capacities of the country is to use its sea and water resources, adding that the country has 4500 kilometers of coasts in its southern part that four provinces enjoy it. He pointed to Khuzestan, Bushehr, Hormozgan and Sistan and Baluchestan as the provinces which benefit from coasts while the country has some 2000 kilometers of coasts in the north.

Moalem further said that with enjoying such a considerable coastal areas, Iran’s share of world fishery products is not even 0.5%, adding that some 212m tons of fishery products are produced in the world per year and Iran’s share is only 1.2m tons.

He added that the question is why with having such a great amount of coasts Iran’s share of the fishery in the world is insignificant. He added that Iran ranks 23 in the world in fishery products but India, China and Indonesia are the major fishery producers in the world and these three countries account for 73% of world fishery products.

Moalem further said that the per capita for fishery products consumption in Iran is 13 kilograms and tinned fish is the dominant fisher product consumption in Iran.

He further pointed to the reason for establishment of Fishery Company by Etka Organization and said that Etka Organization is a big operational group which missed fishery and it decided Fishery Company to be launched. He further said that the fishery company of the organization had only one factory in Ghaemshahr last year but due to the prudence and wise management of Etka Organization, the number of factories increased and the fishery unit of the organization was launched in Chabahar.

He added that the fishery chain in Etka Organization has been formed since last year and the center of operation of this unit is in Chabahar Port as the port is a strategic port in the region and the Middle East. He said that the main fishing in this port is industrial fishes which is used in the tuna producing factories.

He added that the company exported sole and croaker fish worth of $540m, noting that the region can produce 4,000 tons of shrimp and 85% of shrimp product is exported and Arab states and Southeast Asian countries are the main destinations for Iran’s shrimp which earns good amount of forex for the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Fishery export stands at 62,500 tons in H1. Iran has exported 62,500 tons of fisheries in the first half of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-September 22), according to an official with Iran Fisheries Organization (IFO).

Isa Golshahi, IFO’s director-general for quality improvement, processing, and market development, said that live, frozen and processed fisheries and aquatic products have been exported to different countries in the first six months of this year.

More than 27,000 tons of fish, 201 tons of ornamental fish, 8,900 tons of shrimp, 6,500 tons of canned fish, 1.1 tons of farmed caviar based on the country’s customs statistics, and two tons of trout baby were exported from the country, the official stated.

He approved the export of about four tons of farmed caviar in the past Iranian calendar year and said: “Last year, in addition to the export of 2.282 tons of farmed caviar, according to Iran’s customs statistics, 1.602 tons of farmed caviar was exited from the country with passengers in 30-gram, 50-gram, and 100-gram cans, and there were also some caviar sales in the free shops inside the airport (before the gate) and the total of these statistics shows the sales and export of about four tons of caviar from the country.”

As Golshahi has previously said in terms of accessing some new target markets in the field of fisheries, cooperation with the relevant organizations such as chambers of commerce, Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the non-governmental sector to open new markets in the international arena is one the agenda of the IFO’s plans.

Over the past two years, the efforts of the Aquatics’ Production and Trade Union of Iran, and the non-governmental sector have led to the addition of markets in countries such as Oman and Malaysia to Iran’s target export markets in this field, he further noted.

Fishery production has increased noticeably in Iran in recent years.

Enjoying high quality, Iran’s fishery products were sold easily in the export markets, and also some new export destinations welcomed these products in the past two years; as new markets including China, South Korea, and the Eurasian Union nations opened up for Iranian fishery products.

Sultanate of Oman enjoys cultural, social, political, economic and security commonalities with the Islamic Republic of Iran, he said, adding, “fair and suitable exchanges were conducted in the past in the fields of fishery activities between the two countries.”

Deputy minister of agriculture pointed to the fishery productions of the country and said, “currently, approx. 500,000 tons of warm- and cold-water fish, 50,000 tons of farmed shrimps, 3,000 tons of caviar fish, 5,000 tons of farmed caviar, more than 15,000 tons of farmed fish in cage, approx. 200 million ornamented fish are produced in the country annually.”

He went on to say that Islamic Republic of Iran is ready for making joint investment with Oman in the field of fishery and can provide Omani side with its research achievements.

For his part, Hamad bin Said Al-Awfi, Undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries introduced Omani fishery and fishing industry as ‘traditional’ and added, “total production volume of aquaculture in Oman hit 553,000 tons in 2018, showing a significant 50 percent growth as compared to a year earlier.”

Oman imports a part of its required shrimp and fish from the United Arab Emirates in dried form, he said, adding, “accordingly, Oman can use Iran’s capacity for importing dried shrimp and fish.”

According to the official, efforts are underway to increase production to 1.5 million tons by the end of the sixth five-year development plan (2016-21).

“Currently, there are some restrictions on fishing in coastal water resources; so, it is impossible to permit hunting that would exceed the said amount,” he said.

Khon Mirzaei said that explorations are conducted in the Indian Ocean and outside Iran’s maritime borders for hunting lanternfish.

According to him, approaches have been proposed for supporting the cultivation of sea creatures in farms and simplifying the exports of the valuable item.
