Former FBI agent Robert Levinson has no legal or criminal case in Iranian courts: FM spox

According To Iran News, The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mousavi dismissed on Sunday an earlier report by the Associated Press, saying that the missing former FBI agent Robert Levinson does not have any legal case open in Iranian courts.

In a Sunday statement, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Seyed Abbas Mousavi dismissed as false an earlier report by the Associated Press that there were proceedings “ongoing” over Robert A. Levinson, in Iran.

“According to the latest information that I obtained from the revered officials of the Judiciary, Mr. Levinson does not have any legal or criminal case in any of courts of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Mousavi said.

The spokesman added that if there has been an issue brought up in that regard, we assume that it must have had to do the issue of his missing.

He further explained that when Iran was asked for help with regard to his case, It opened a case for him based on humanitarian considerations, as it usually does this for reported missing people.

Mousavi also stressed that his case is not a criminal or legal case as the AP has claimed.

He added that the alleged open case is about a missing individual which was opened after the Islamic Republic of Iran was asked for to show its goodwill. He went on to say that Iran is pursuing the issue based on humanitarian rounds and as it has so far said on different occasions the country has no information on his fate.

The FM spokesman further expressed Iran’s readiness to help with the issue, while stressing that Iran’s readiness to cooperate on his case does not necessarily mean he has an open case in Iranian courts.

Iran’s national volleyball team coach Igor Kolakovic slammed US security forces for mistreating the team’s players upon their arrival at a US airport, saying that officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) asked the Iranian volleyball players “stupid questions”.

“In the USA, the FBI … asked some players one by one some stupid questions,” Kolakovic told the Tasnim News Agency.

“Do they know some person from some photos?… And police keep us in the airport in one small place for almost three hours and at the same time Poland passed close to us with smiles, without any procedure…”

“We are a national team in one sport… For us it mustn’t be a problem,” the coach said.

He further deplored the planning for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League (VNL) and said, “This stupid kind of competition… How is it possible that Iran has changed every week continent but France, Bulgaria, Serbia, Russia, USA, Poland and the others just traveled in one or two continents…?”

“Also, how is it possible that young sportsmen can’t get a visa for USA or EU… What is this… It is not sport,” Kolakovic added.

“I am so angry because a lot of players are injured, not only from Iran… But for us, now, it is a big problem. We have to think about Word championship… For example for today match against USA we can’t count on a lot of players for different reasons… For example, Mousavi, Javad, Touhte, Kazemi, Sarifi, Salafzoon, Gafour, Gayemi… It is so much,” Kolakovic concluded.

The remarks came as Iran’s national volleyball team lost its match against the United States in the fourth week of VNL on Monday.

Later this week, Iran will host South Korea, Bulgaria, and Germany in Tehran in the final week of VNL.

Iran has no chance to advance to the next round of the competitions and will only play the next three matches for pride.

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has told FBI staff he is stepping down effective Monday — a move that surprised even those expecting his March retirement, sources tell CNN.

McCabe was a central target of President Donald Trump’s ire toward the FBI over its involvement in the investigation into potential collusion between his campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.

He was eligible to retire in March, but with his accumulated leave, he was able to step down earlier.

Trump learned about the departure Monday morning, a White House official told CNN. The President did not answer a reporter’s question at the White House about McCabe’s departure.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump was not part of McCabe’s choice to step down and that the White House had not been part of the decision.

Various sources described McCabe’s departure as a mutual decision, while others said it was the result of pressure to step down. One source briefed on the matter said McCabe announced his decision to senior executives and portrayed it as his choice. The source disputed the characterization that McCabe was removed.

But a source familiar with the matter said FBI Director Christopher Wray told McCabe he is bringing in his own team, which he would not be a part of, and that it was McCabe’s decision whether to stay at the FBI or leave.

FBI Assistant Deputy Director David Bowdich has been appointed as the bureau’s acting deputy director.

Trump has kept nonstop pressure on McCabe ever since he became acting director in May, using the longtime law enforcement official as a punching bag — both publicly and privately — to vent his frustrations about the FBI. In December, Trump tweeted “FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits. 90 days to go?!!!”

And in July 2017, Trump flatly asked why Attorney General Jeff Sessions had not fired McCabe yet.

“Why didn’t A.G. Sessions replace Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, a Comey friend who was in charge of Clinton investigation but got big dollars ($700,000) for his wife’s political run from Hillary Clinton and her representatives,” Trump wrote. “Drain the Swamp!”

His issue with McCabe stems from his wife’s failed run for the Virginia state Senate in 2015. The Wall Street Journal reported that Dr. Jill McCabe received six contributions totaling $467,500 from then-Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s political action committee.

In addition, campaign records show that the state Democratic Party, over which McAuliffe has great influence, made two other payments totaling $207,788 in September and October 2015. These donations all occurred before McCabe took over as deputy director of the FBI and before he would have had any oversight into the Clinton email investigation.

The story, which came out during the 2016 campaign, colored Trump’s view of McCabe and led him, according to The Washington Post, to ask McCabe who he voted for in the 2016 election.

Trump, during a briefing with reporters earlier this month, denied asking that question, but went on to slam McCabe, who briefly served as Trump’s acting FBI director after Trump fired James Comey in May.

“I don’t think so. No. I don’t think I did,” Trump told reporters about asking who McCabe voted for.

McCabe, according to two Virginia campaign consultants — one Republican, one Democratic — with access to the Virginia campaign participation rolls, did not vote in the 2016 presidential general election but did vote in the 2016 Republican presidential primary.

Trump stands by his criticism of McCabe, Sanders said Monday, referring further questions to the FBI.

Sessions communicated to FBI Director Christopher Wray, who was hand-picked by Trump and sworn in in August, that he needed a fresh start with his senior team at the FBI, a source familiar with the conversation has told CNN. Sessions specifically suggested McCabe and the bureau’s top lawyer, James Baker, should go. Baker was reassigned late last year.

With his departure, McCabe joins a list of other top bureau officials who have stepped down in recent days as Wray assembles his own team. The departures of the FBI chief of staff and general counsel were also revealed this month.

Sanders on Monday defended the pressure the President has placed on the FBI and Justice Department over the Russia investigation, telling CNN’s Jim Acosta at the White House briefing that the administration has done “everything we can to be transparent.”

“The only thing the President applied pressure to is to get it resolved so you guys and everyone else can focus on the things Americans actually care about: making sure everybody gets the Russia fever out of their system once and for all,” she said.

The software the FBI and 18,000 other US law enforcement agencies use to analyze fingerprints may contain a Russian code placed by a French company after a secret deal with a Russian firm, two whistleblowers say.

The former employees of a subsidiary of the French firm Safran Group said the company secretly purchased code from the Russian cybersecurity company Papillon Systems and then included it in fingerprint analysis software it later sold to the FBI, BuzzFeed News reported Tuesday.

The Russian company is said to be regularly working with Russian law enforcement agencies such as the Federal Security Service (FSB).

According to Philippe Desbois, the Safran subsidiary’s former CEO of Russia operations, officials in Safran Group have been worried that the FBI may learn the truth.

“They told me, ‘We will have big problems if the FBI is aware about the origin of the algorithm,’” said Desbois, who has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against Safran. “It was always the intonation like we have done something bad that is a secret between us and that we should not repeat it to anybody,”

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to the new allegations via a statement, reading: “As is typical for all commercial software that we operate, appropriate security reviews were completed prior to operational deployment.”

In September, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) banned the use of software produced by Russian firm Kaspersky Lab in federal agencies and departments, arguing it would pose a threat against the US national security.
