TEHRAN (Iran News) – This year’s edition of Fajr International Film Festival (FIFF) is canceled due to the spread of the deadly coronavirus that has negatively affected all cinematic events and activities in the world.

According to the public rations of the festival, Mohammad Mehdi Asgarpour, the festival’s secretary, said: “Following the outbreak of the respiratory disease globally about three months ago, it was primarily decided to postpone the 38th edition of the FIFF to early June.”

FIFF is Iran’s major international film event. This year it was scheduled to be held on 16-24 April.

The event’s organizers were hoping to see a downward trend in the spread of the virus and the final eradication of it in the near future.

“However, Fajr International Film Festival didn’t happen and the pandemic canceled or postponed many major events across the world,” Asgarpour added.

He said that this year’s edition of the event has been canceled and the preparations have started to hold the event in next year’s spring.

The new viral disease, named COVID-19, is affecting 212 countries. It has spread around the planet, sending billions of people into lockdown as health services struggle to cope.

As of Thursday, 3,822,951 people have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus in various countries around the world, while 265,084 have lost their lives due to the disease.

French actor Jean-Pierre Léaud, best known for Francois Truffaut’s 400 Blows and Jean Luc Godard’s Masculin Feminin, is heading his way to help celebrate the 36th edition of Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran.

The French actor’s career has gone hand in hand with the great directors of the French New Wave, but he has remained a compelling and continuing presence long after that movement ended. He has influenced a further generation of French directors, as well as filmmakers from other cultures, and he is attending this year’s Fajr to share some of his experiences with filmmakers and fans.

Jean-Pierre Léaud (born 28 May 1944) is a French actor, best known for playing Antoine Doinel in François Truffaut’s series of films about that character, beginning with The 400 Blows. He also worked several times with Jean-Luc Godard, and is a significant figure of the French New Wave. Léaud is not everybody’s cup of tea for sure, but will remain an important name in film history.

As an actor he can be adored or hated for exactly the same reasons: he is one of those rare players that directors let improvise his dialogue, which gets on certain viewers’ nerves while it fascinates others. The same is true for his very personal staccato diction and elocution and his many mannerisms, the most obvious one being his way to run his hand through his long hair.

But there is no denying Léaud is not just another actor, whether you love him or are allergic to him. The son of actress Jacqueline Pierreux and scriptwriter/assistant director Pierre Léaud, Jean-Pierre started acting very early. Indeed, he was only thirteen when he first appeared on a screen, playing a small role in a swashbuckling film directed by veteran Georges Lampin la Tour, Prends Garde! (1957). And he was still only fourteen when he answered an ad placed in a newspaper by François Truffaut, who was seeking a young actor able to play Antoine Doinel, a troubled adolescent, in his first feature film The 400 Blows.

In the late seventies and throughout the eighties Léaud worked irregularly, mainly on television, occasionally giving a crazy performance in a mainstream film, as was the case in Josiane’s Balasko crime comedy Les Keufs, for which he got a César nomination. But he made an exciting comeback in the nineties when several “New New Wave” directors hired Léaud to pay homage to their elders. Among them French movie makers such as Olivier Assayas, Danièle Dubroux , Serge Le Péron or Bertrand Bonello and foreigners like Finnish Aki Käurismäki and Taiwanese Tsai Ming-Liang. A second youth for eternally young, rebellious, ill-at-ease, annoyingly romantic, touchingly annoying Jean-Pierre Léaud, whose round face staring at the camera in the last shot of The 400 Blows will never be forgotten.

Presided over by Iranian film writer and director Reza Mirkarimi, the 36th edition of Fajr International Film Festival will be held in Tehran on April 19-27.

The festival is set to welcome over 300 special guests to this year’s edition, ranging from filmmakers to screenwriters, actors to activists. A host of A-listers will attend, including legendary Italian actor Franco Nero and influential American film director Oliver Stone.

TEHRAN – The secretary of the 36th Fajr International Film Festival, Reza Mirkarimi, said that none of the foreign guests were paid for their attendance at the event.

“We did not give any guest money,” Mirkarimi told the Persian service of MNA on Sunday and added, “The extent of service provided for Oliver Stone and his wife was that we paid for their plane tickets.”

“This demonstrates the skills and proficiency of the organizers of a festival if they are able to arouse the curiosity of its guests about the event,” he stated.

He also added that their method to invite the guests was so alluring that the invitees felt there would be a loss if they would miss the event.

A rumor went around on Persian social networks that the foreign cineastes at the Fajr festival, including the American filmmaker Oliver Stone, got paid a lot of money to be a guest at the event.

“We made good use of them; i.e. they held numerous workshops, delivered speeches and gave many interviews during their stay in Tehran,” Mirkarimi said.

The 36th edition of the Fajr International Festival was held in Tehran from April 19 to 26 as Bulgarian director Milko Lazarov’s drama “Ága” was selected as best film at the event.

TEHRAN – Iran celebrated its 120 years of national cinema history at Tehran’s Felestin Cinema on Thursday during the opening ceremony of the 36th Fajr International Film Festival.

The ceremony was attended by a large number of Iranian cineastes and foreign guests as veteran actor Reza Kianian cut a cake prepared for the celebration.

In his short opening speech, Kianian told the audience, “We have a number of good films this year and I hope you will all like and welcome the films.”

Iranian director Majid Majidi’s “Beyond the Clouds” was the opening film of the event, which was screened in Hindi with English and Persian subtitles.

The film, which was made in India in 2017, revolves around the life of a young boy, Amir, and his sister, Tara, in Mumbai. When on the run from the cops, Amir finds his estranged sister, who, in a bid to protect her brother, lands in jail. Their entire lives are clouded by despair when, unexpectedly, the light shines on them from beyond the clouds.

Tehran’s Charsu Cineplex will host the festival running until April 27.

In addition, a collection of photos by the Paris-based Iranian photographer Alfred Yaqubzadeh on Palestine’s Intifada opened at the 14 Gallery as part of the programs arranged for the festival.

The collection named “Intifada Uprising” puts the spotlight on Palestinians and three decades of their uprising against the Israeli occupation of their homeland.

The exhibit is being organized in the Broken Olive Branches section, which is screening films on the upheavals in today’s Muslim world.

Yaqobzadeh has published a collection of his photos on Palestinians’ struggle against the Zionist regime in a book titled “Promised Peace”. His books “Iran-Iraq War” and “Faces of War” focus on the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.
