TEHRAN (Iran News) – A group of Iranian referees led by Alireza Faghani will officiate the match between Malaysia and Indonesia in qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian AFC Cup.

FIFA has announced that Alireza Faghani, Mohammadreza Mansouri, Mohammadreza Abolfazli and Mo’ud Bonyadifar will officiate the game, reported the Iranian football federation.

The match will be held in the Group G of the preliminary round of World Cup qualifiers on November 19 at Kuala Lumpur’s Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

Currently, Thailand leads Group G with seven points while Vietnam and UAE rank next with seven and six points respectively. Malaysia sits fourth with three points and Indonesia has failed to gain any point from its past four games.

Faghani has recently migrated to Australia but continues to officiate in international events as an Iranian referee. He has also become a full-time contracted referee for the upcoming Hyundai A-League 2019/20 Season.

The 2016 AFC Referee of the Year made history in the Russia 2018 World Cup by officiating the third-place playoff between Belgium and England. He had earlier refereed games between German and Mexico, Serbia and Brazil and France and Argentina matches in the World Cup.

Born in 1978, Alireza Faghani has been on the international list of referees since 2008 and has officiated important matches like 2014 AFC Champions League Final, 2015 AFC Asian Cup Final, 2015 FIFA Club World Cup Final, 2016 Olympic Football Final and 2018 FIFA World Cup third-place play-off.

China’s Shanghai Shenhua and South Korea’s Suwon Samsung Bluewings from Group E will face one another today at the 2018 AFC Champions League.

The match will be judged by the Iranian men’s trio comprising Alireza Faghani as well as assistant referees Reza Sokhandan and Mohammad Reza Mansouri, the three of whom received FC Special Awards for Referees in 2016.

The 2018 AFC Champions League is the 37th edition of Asia’s premier club football tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), running through 16 Jan. to 10 November. The winners of the 2018 AFC Champions League will qualify as the AFC representative at the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

On Tuesday evening, Iran’s Persepolis clinched an decisive win against Football Club Nasaf of Uzbekistan, defeating the Uzbek team 3-0 at the end of a Group C fixture played at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran.

Meanwhile, Iranian professional football club Esteghlal Tehran earned a two-all draw against Al-Rayyan Sports Club of Qatar in Group D.

He is among the six Asian referees, who have been chosen to officiate at the 2018 World Cup.

The 39-year-old referee officiated the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 semi-final clash between Portugal and Chile along with his Iranian assistant referees Reza Sokhandan and Mohammadreza Mansouri.

Faghani made history in 2016 by becoming the first Asian referee to officiate the final of the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament between Brazil and Germany in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2015, Faghani officiated the FIFA Club World Cup final between Barcelona and River Plate in Tokyo. He was also assigned to the final match between Korea Republic and host nation Australia during the hugely successful 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

Faghani has also officiated AFC President’s Cup final (2009), AFC Challenge Cup final (2010) and AFC Champions League final (2014).
