<p class="zn-body__paragraph speakable">TEHRAN (<a href="https://irannewsdaily.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Iran News</a>) &#8211; Should you eat before or after exercise in the morning? The debate has raged for years to how we can burn more fat.</p>
</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph speakable">The eat-first camp says food before exercise boosts blood sugars, giving the body fuel to increase the intensity and length of a workout. It also keeps you from being fatigued or dizzy.</div>
<div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph speakable">The eat-after camp says you burn more fat if you fast before exercise.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">A small UK study published Friday supports the latter point of view: In 30 obese or overweight men, those who exercised before breakfast burned twice the fat as men who ate breakfast before they worked out.</div>
<div></div>
<div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">Unfortunately, the eat-after group didn&#8217;t lose more weight than the eat-before group during the six weeks of the study, but it did have &#8220;profound and positive&#8221; effects on the health of the group that fasted, researchers said.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">Skipping the meal before exercise made the men&#8217;s muscles more responsive to insulin, which controls high blood sugars, thus reducing the risk for diabetes and heart disease.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">&#8220;The group who exercised before breakfast increased their ability to respond to insulin, which is all the more remarkable given that both exercise groups lost a similar amount of weight and both gained a similar amount of fitness,&#8221; said exercise physiologist Javier Gonzalez, an associate professor in the department for health at the University of Bath, in a statement.</div>
<div></div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">&#8220;The only difference was the timing of the food intake,&#8221; Gonzalez added.</div>
<div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">A 2017 study from the University of Bath, also co-authored by Gonzalez, looked at 10 men and found the same results &#8212; because of lower blood sugar levels after fasting, the men burned more fat.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">However, this time the men burned more calories if they ate breakfast first.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">A 2010 study found similar results, this time in a group of 28 healthy, physically active men. One group did no exercise. Two other groups were put through grueling morning exercise of running and cycling four times a week; one group ate before exercise and the other after.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">It&#8217;s likely no surprise that the group who didn&#8217;t exercise gained weight. But contrary to the 2017 study the group who ate breakfast before exercise also gained weight. It was the group that exercised on water and an empty stomach that maintained their weight, lost fat, and kept their blood sugars in good shape.</div>
<div>
<div></div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">What&#8217;s the takeaway? Obviously science needs to look at this a lot harder, with much larger study groups. But based on the science in these studies, it does seem exercising before eating may be good for your overall health, even if it doesn&#8217;t always whittle your waistline.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">If you do choose to work out on an empty stomach, keep these tips from the US Figure Skating Association in mind to keep your muscle tissue from breaking down:</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">
<ul class="cnn_rich_text">
<li>Use the four R&#8217;s of recovery: rehydrate, replenish, repair and reinforce.</li>
<li>Do that by drinking water or sports drinks.</li>
<li>Within 15 to 30 minutes, eat a meal with a 4:1 carb to high-quality protein ratio.</li>
<li>Some good choices are fruit and low-fat Greek yogurt, trail mix, or a banana with peanut butter.</li>
</ul>
</div>
</div>
<div></div>

<div class="story">
<p>Can you be fit and healthy even if you&#8217;re overweight? That&#8217;s the question researchers at York University&#8217;s Faculty of Health set out to answer in a new study that shows physical activity may be equally and perhaps even more important than weight for people living with severe obesity.</p>
<p>According to the recent study, led by Jennifer Kuk, associate professor in York University&#8217;s School of Kinesiology and Health Science, and collaborator Dr. Sean Wharton, MD, medical director of the Wharton Medical Clinic and adjunct professor at York University, individuals with severe obesity who are fit have a similar health profile to those who weigh significantly less than them. The goal of the study was to look at the benefits of cardiorespiratory fitness on cardiovascular health in populations with mild to severe obesity.</p>
<p>The results suggest individuals with even severe obesity, or a BMI greater than 40, can be fit and healthy.</p>
<p>&#8220;Obesity is only related with worse health in individuals who were unfit,&#8221; says Kuk. &#8220;We know that once you get beyond a BMI of 40, the risk of cardiovascular conditions increases exponentially so this study shows that having a high fitness level is still beneficial and it really reinforces the importance of fitness.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kuk says doing 150 minutes of exercise per week, as per physical activity guidelines, generally translates to less than half pound of weight loss. Nevertheless, this amount of exercise can mean dramatic improvements in health for those with severe obesity.</p>
<p>&#8220;You really have to disconnect the body weight from the importance of fitness,&#8221; says Kuk. &#8220;You can get fit without losing weight and have health benefits.&#8221;</p>
<p>Data was gathered from 853 Canadian patients attending Wharton Medical weight management clinics in Southern Ontario. Individuals completed a clinical exam which included fasting blood measures and a maximal treadmill stress test.</p>
<p>The amount of fitness necessary to achieve health benefits was far less than what most individuals would think. The research showed that the greatest health benefits come from avoiding the lowest 20 per cent of fitness levels. This means that 80 per cent of people are fit enough to get health benefits.</p>
<p>In this study, 41% of participants with mild obesity had high fitness levels, while 25 per cent and 11 per cent of the participants with moderate and severe obesity, respectively, had high fitness. Individuals with severe obesity were more likely to have high blood pressure, glucose, and triglycerides if they were in the lowest 20 per cent of fitness levels, but were not more likely to have these issues if they were in the 80 per cent group.</p>
<p>Earlier research has shown that much less physical activity is required to improve health than is needed to lose weight. However, this is some of the first research suggesting that physical activity may be more important for people living with severe obesity.</p>
<p>&#8220;In my practice, I see many patients who are looking for different results,&#8221; says Wharton. &#8220;There are some patients that want to significantly improve their health and others that are only looking for an aesthetic goal. When it comes to health, this study reinforces the notion that people don&#8217;t need to lose weight to be healthy.&#8221;</p>

<div class="story">
<p>Experts at St George&#8217;s University of London, have examined the mechanism underlining exercise&#8217;s way of protecting the body against nicotine dependence and withdrawal.</p>
<p>The study reveals that even moderate intensity exercise markedly reduces the severity of nicotine withdrawal symptoms, Science Daily reported.</p>
<p>Researchers also showed there was an increased activation of a type of receptor in the brain called α7 nicotinic acetylcholine, which is a target of nicotine.</p>
<p>The findings support the protective effect of exercise preceding smoking cessation against the development of physical dependence, which may aid smoking cessation by reducing the severity of withdrawal symptoms.</p>
<p>Dr Alexis Bailey, Senior Lecturer in Neuropharmacology, at St George&#8217;s, University of London, said: &#8220;The evidence suggests that exercise decreases nicotine withdrawal symptoms in humans; however, the mechanisms mediating this effect are unclear. Our research has shed light on how the protective effect of exercise against nicotine dependence actually works.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the study, nicotine-treated mice that were undertaking two or 24 hours a day of wheel running exercise displayed a significant reduction of withdrawal symptom severity compared with the sedentary group.</p>
<p>The research is published in the British Journal of Pharmacology.</p>
