TEHRAN (Iran News) – ‘Bidboland gas refinery plays a significant role in Iranian energy industry’. Managing Director of Iran’s Persian Gulf Bid Boland Gas Refinery has said the refinery is playing a significant role in providing feed to the country’s petrochemical plants and completing their output basket.

“The position of this refinery is very important in supplying feed to petrochemical units and completing the country’s energy basket.” Mahmoud Aminnejad said on Sunday in a ceremony for celebrating the achievements of the country’s petrochemical industry in the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20).

Underlining that the refinery was constructed in a condition when the country was under significant pressure due to the U.S. sanctions, the official said: “the project is important because it has made us able to process and refine the associated gases collected from the country’s oil fields.”

“With the construction of Bidboland Persian Gulf gas refinery, the oil industry’s 110-year-old dream of collecting and processing oil’s associated gases has been fulfilled,” he said.

He called Bidboland Persian Gulf Gas Refinery one of the most important projects among all South Pars projects and said: “After sour gas entered this refinery, we reached product in less than seven days.”

Persian Gulf Bid Boland Gas Refinery, in which $3.4 billion has been invested, was officially inaugurated by President Hassan Rouhani in southwestern Khouzestan Province in late January.

The refinery was put into operation with the aim of increasing the production of sweet gas, reducing the consumption of petroleum products, production of propane, butane, and gas condensate, the export of by-products, the supply of natural gas to urban areas, and supplying ethane required by petrochemical units in the region.

The refinery, which took 36 months to complete, has a daily processing capacity of more than 56 million cubic meters of associated gas and is expected to generate $700 million of revenue every year.

This complex receives about 13.500 tons of sour gas per year from NGL 900 and 1000 Plants while receiving 2.25 million tons of sweet gas from NGL 1200 and 1300 Plants.

As the largest gas refinery project in West Asia, Bid Boland will have an annual production capacity of 10.4 million tons of methane, 1.5 million tons of ethane, one million tons of propane, 600,000 tons of gas condensates, and 500,000 tons of butane.

In 2020, Bid Bolad Refinery project was nominated for the International Project Management Association (IPMA)’s Global Project Excellence Award at the energy sector; it was also awarded as Iran’s top mega project by the Ninth National Project Management Award.

“We have manufactured the smallest gas turbine in the country with the size of a shoe box and it can produce electricity and heat concurrently,” Seyed Mohammad Hassani, the executor of the plan in an Iranian company, said on Wednesday.

He added that the micro gas turbines can produce 2w to 10w of electricity, noting that the product enjoys high quality.

“We have been able to attract customers from European consumers and at present, we are having exports to Britain, Germany and Canada,” Hassani said.

Iran has taken wide strides in science and technology fields in recent years.

Iranian researchers built a new gas turbine with high power and efficiency in 2018, and launched it domestically and in Iraq.

“The micro gas turbine, B2MAP, has been fully produced and launched in an Iranian engineering company,” Morteza Nezamabadi, one of the designers of the turbine, told FNA at the time.

He added that the new gas turbine works with 185 mega power with the efficiency of 36.4.

“The turbines have been used in projects to build power plants in Iraq as well as the Iranian towns of Aliabad and Assalouyeh,” Nezamabadi said.

Iran unveiled the first home-made 25-megawatt wind turbine generator in Karaj city, near Tehran, in 2015.

The 25-MW wind turbine generator was unveiled in a ceremony attended by Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri.

The new generator has been manufactured by Iranian experts at MAPNA.

Ali Pajouhan said on Sunday that valuable steps have been taken for domestic production of catalysts used in petrochemical processes in Iran, adding that commercialization of the savvy for production of three catalysts have been carried out by PRTC and another one is also underway.

He said 13 petrochemical companies had purchased the catalysts and would use them in their operations.

As an example, the official said that consuming Ziegler–Natta catalyst used for the production of linear light polyethylene would save companies some $30 million annually.

Moreover, commercialization of the catalyst for the production of high-density polyethylene pipes would save petrochemical companies $15 million annually.

PRTC cooperates with a wide range of petrochemical companies in Iran as licensor and research consultant, Pajouhan said.

Petrochemical is Iran’s most important industry after oil and gas. The National Petrochemical Company hopes to lift output capacity to 120 million tons per annum by 2022.

In the March 2018-19 fiscal, Iranian companies exported $14.1 billion worth of petrochemicals. Official data has it that petrochemicals account for 32% of Iran’s non-oil exports.

The petrochemical industry has played a key role in domestic economic growth as it creates value-added and reduces the sale of oil and gas on which the economy has been dependent for decades.

With abundant hydrocarbon reserves and new private sector investments, Iran is working hard to maintain its global status in the key sector and broaden its scope.

SZOGPC’s operations director, Seyed Mahmoud Mirbagheri said on Tuesday that 499 of the company’s needed items were supplied by domestic contractors.

The other 22 were also repaired by Iranian companies, he added.

He said the company had prioritized identification of proficient domestic companies that could supply or manufacture the items needed in SZOGPC’s oil and gas projects, adding that the engineering section of the company had formed technical and specialized teams in various sectors like electricity, mechanic and measuring instruments in order to define research projects for manufacturing or repairing the items domestically.

The official said repairing a VGV Controller, three electronic feed cards and manufacturing of the Siemens SGT ۴۰۰ turbine coupling bolt, which is one of the state-of-the-art oil and gas turbines, were among SZOGPC’s achievements in the current year.

Furthermore, repairing all kinds of valves, electromotors, hydraulic pumps, transformers and manufacturing of all types of O-rings, washers, gear, cutting machinery, etc. are other items which have either been manufactured or repaired by domestic companies for SZOGPC.

SZOGPC is one of the most active companies in Iran’s oil industry. Estimates show its reserves hold a total of 3.7 trillion cubic meters of in-place gas, some 2.7 trillion cubic meters of which are deemed recoverable.

The company also holds 425 million barrels of crude oil reserves, of which 12 million have so far been extracted. Its crude output is expected to stand at 6,100 barrels per day in the next fiscal year that starts on March 21.

The company operates 11 oil and gas fields, including Aghar, Dalan, Nar, Kangan, Tabnak, Sorkhoun, Homa, Varavi, Shanoul, Sarvestan and Sa’adatadab fields in Fars, Bushehr and Hormozgan provinces. All the fields are located in five regions, namely Nar and Kangan, Aghar and Dalan, Parsian, South Sorkhoun and Gashou, as well as Sarvestan and Saadatabad.

As per a memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides on Monday, IMIDRO and NPC will provide the grounds to speed up the construction operation of the petrochemical projects in Phase I of Parsian Energy Intensive Industrial Special Economic Zone (PEIISEZ), along the Persian Gulf.

Accordingly, the state-run NPC is tasked with vetting the credentials of petrochemical units intended to be based in PEIISEZ.

Facilitating the deployment of petrochemical companies in the zone, the MoU will accelerate the operation of five petrochemical projects in the region, each of which will have a capacity to generate five to seven thousand jobs.

Plans are underway to produce 4 million tons of steel, 18 million tons of petrochemicals and 1.2 million tons of aluminum. Besides 6,000 megawatts of power will also be generated in the region.
