Comprehensive Planning Underway to Replace Gas with Electricity in Heating

TEHRAN (Iran News) Speaking at the 9th International Conference and 6th National Award on Renewable Energy, President Pezeshkian honored the memory of national service martyrs and the anniversary of the liberation of Khorramshahr. He reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to expanding clean energy, calling it a clear and vital path for the country’s future.

Highlighting the government’s strategy to boost renewable energy sources—such as solar, wind, and nuclear—Pezeshkian stated that this transition has already begun and is being systematically pursued through daily and weekly cabinet meetings.

He emphasized the urgent need to substitute electricity for gas in heating systems, adding that detailed planning is already in progress. This includes the production and import of solar panels, equipping power plants, upgrading cooling and heating appliance manufacturing lines, and integrating energy-efficient designs into construction engineering.

“Energy plays a vital role in national development,” the president remarked. “The more we can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and incorporate clean energy into daily life, the smoother our path toward sustainable development will be.”

Pezeshkian noted that achieving success in this area requires broad cooperation from experts, investors, government officials, and members of Parliament. He reiterated the administration’s resolve to address energy imbalances by leveraging domestic capabilities and collective wisdom.

The president also called on the public to assist in managing energy use. “Just as citizens cooperated by saving gas during the winter, we hope they will also help this summer by cutting electricity use,” he said. Replacing high-consumption chandeliers with low-energy lighting was cited as an effective measure.

Referring to the significant damages caused by energy blackouts last year, Pezeshkian revealed that over 3,000 trillion rials (approximately $6 billion) in economic losses were incurred due to gas and electricity outages. “We cannot resolve this issue without the cooperation of experts and industry stakeholders,” he added.

Stressing the foundational role of stable electricity in production and development, he concluded, “We must first secure the energy needs of commerce and industry in order to plan for long-term development.”

In closing, Pezeshkian thanked the organizers of the event and invited universities, media outlets, cultural institutions, religious leaders, volunteer groups, and other organizations to play an active role in promoting energy conservation and helping to establish a sustainable development model based on renewable energy.

During the event, top investors, industrial producers, public organizations, municipalities, energy service companies, academics, young researchers, and leading regional electricity distribution firms were honored for their achievements in the renewable energy sector.

Electricity Exchange Agreement With Pakistan Extended

TEHRAN (Iran News) Regarding the extension of the electricity exchange agreement with Pakistan, he stated: “This agreement was signed last year under international commitments and bilateral agreements between the two countries. It has been extended for the upcoming year with no significant changes to the volume of electricity exports. Export levels remain below the capacity of the established transmission lines.”

The spokesperson for the electricity industry explained that electricity exports to Pakistan occur at levels lower than the contractual agreement and are carried out during periods of surplus capacity. He stressed that the current exchange does not exacerbate the electricity supply imbalance within the country.

Acknowledging the challenges facing the power sector, he said: “The Ministry of Energy and the electricity industry are fully aware of the current difficulties. Our colleagues in the electricity sector are working tirelessly to address these issues, and efforts are underway to minimize power supply problems by delivering more natural gas to power plants.”

In conclusion, the spokesperson highlighted that to compensate for domestic shortages, the Ministry of Energy has been importing electricity from neighboring countries, and at present, the volume of electricity imports exceeds exports.

Iran ends power cuts for households amid increased feedstock at power plants

TEHRAN (Iran News) The announcement followed 16 days of rolling blackouts in the capital Tehran and other big cities as the government struggled to tackle the gas supply imbalance in cold months without reliance on the use of mazut in power plants which is a prime source of air pollution.

Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi stated on Tuesday that fuel reserves for power plants have increased by 3% in recent days. “At present, the capacity of power plants and the national grid, given adequate fuel supply, exceeds the consumption needs of subscribers,” he said.

He noted that Iran is in the maintenance season for power plants, preparing for the summer electricity demand of 2025.

If the current trend of fuel supply continues, the power industry will be fully prepared to meet electricity demands, the official said, however, noting that in the event of reduced fuel deliveries, the country will need to implement consumption management plans in other sectors.

Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi also confirmed the positive developments, saying, “In recent days, the electricity supply situation has been favorable, and we have received sufficient fuel. As a result, no blackouts are currently in effect.”

Iran’s total steel output since the start of 2024 reached 21.3 million mt, down 3.1% from the previous period in 2023.

Iran was the 10th largest steel producer in the world in September, according to worldsteel figures.

The country was seventh in the ranking in May just before power cuts began to affect output in steel mills.

Reports show electricity supplies to Iranian industries have returned to normal levels now that demand for cooling has declined in the country.

The deputy head of the Iran Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution Management Company (TAVANIR) for foreign trade affairs pointed to the situation of the electricity exchange of the country with its neighbors and added that Iran is one of the largest electricity generating countries in the region, with about 93,000 megawatts of installed capacity.

Currently, Iran imports electricity from the Republic of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkmenistan and exports electricity to Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan in return, Mohammad Allahdad stated.

He went on to say that Iran also exports and imports electricity to/from neighboring Turkey bilaterally, Mehr news agency reported.

Allahdad said the electricity exchange between Iran and Turkey exceeded 50 megawatts over the previous years but with the construction of the HBDC Back to Back substation in Turkey’s Van border point, the country’s exchange of electricity has increased from 50 to 450 megawatts.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –The government has implemented a project to provide nomadic households with electricity via the use of solar panels.

Knowledge-based and indigenized technologies are used in carrying out this project, Fars reported.

Some 30,000 solar panel systems will be provided to the households. The number of panels is expected to double by the end of the current Iranian year (March 19, 2024).

The government pays 90 percent of the costs of each system.

Solar panels are used to easily provide electricity in far-off places. It is not only clean but also cheap and limitless.

Solar-powered photovoltaic panels convert the sun’s rays into electricity by exciting electrons in silicon cells using the photons of light from the sun, which is the cleanest, most reliable form of renewable energy, and can be used in several forms to help generate electricity along with income.

Solar power plants

Some 40,000 small-scale solar power plants were to be installed for the underprivileged by the end of the past Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2023), Seyed Morteza Bakhtiari, head of the Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation, said in October 2022.

A memorandum of understanding on the construction of 550,000 solar power plants has been signed between the Basij, the Ministry of Energy, the Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation, and the Welfare Organization, he explained.

A total of 110,000 solar panels would be allocated to the underprivileged under the coverage of the Relief Foundation and the Welfare Organization over the next five years.

He went on to state that the share of Relief Foundation was to provide 40,000 solar power plants and the welfare organization’s contribution was 30,000.

In this line, the Ministry of Energy was committed to purchasing the electricity produced by the families for 20 years, he said, adding that producing electrical energy from renewable sources and helping to increase the national GDP were other positive consequences of implementing this plan.

Rural development plan

The Majlis (the Iranian Parliament) has approved a total of 31 trillion rials (nearly $103 million) for rural development in the budget bill for the current Iranian calendar year (March 2022-March 2023), IRIB reported on Sunday.

By allocating this amount of budget, the whole credit of comprehensive development plans will reach 42 trillion rials (about $84 million), Akbar Nikzad, head of the Housing Foundation, said.

The comprehensive development plans aim to develop rural areas in line with cultural, economic, and social conditions, as well as housing provision for the rural residents and improving environmental services.

“There are around 40,000 villages in the country with more than 20 households, for all of which comprehensive development plans have been approved every 10 years, and after this period, the village comprehensive development plans need to be reviewed.

The plans have so far been reviewed and re-implemented for 4,000 villages with more than 20 households in the country,” he stated.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has reiterated that that the Islamic Republic is willing to assist Lebanon in building power plants to ease the country’s decades-long electricity shortfall.

Speaking at a news conference in Beirut on Friday, Amir Abdollahian said Iran has repeatedly made proposals to resolve the electricity shortage in Lebanon and is now prepared to deploy technical and engineering teams to Beirut to build power plants that can produce 2,000MW of electricity.

He asserted that significant Iranian corporations have constructed power plants in nearby states as well as in other nations, adding that “this contract is to the benefit of both sides.”

The minister went on to note that Iran supports any measure that aims to address Lebanon’s electricity and energy shortfall as soon as possible.

As a result of severe sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies, Lebanon has been engulfed in one of the greatest economic crises in recent history, according to the World Bank. Since 2019, the value of the Lebanese pound has decreased by about 95% on the black market.

Additionally, the Arab nation has faced a major fuel crisis that has caused homes and businesses to struggle with ongoing power outages, and its economic collapse since 2019 has slowed down fuel imports for government facilities.

Amir Abdollahian, who on Wednesday started a tour of Syria and Lebanon on Wednesday, also spoke with top officials of the two nations regarding important domestic, regional, and global topics.

In his press conference, he also said only Baghdad and Damascus must make decisions about border transportation. “The borders of our region should be the borders of economic and commercial friendship. There is no need for restoration of the military and security measures along with Iraq-Syria common borders.”

The top diplomat stated that Iran considers any rapprochement with the fictitious Israeli regime to be a “strategic” error.

“We always advise our friends in the region to prevent any normalization of relations with a regime that brought nothing to the region but insecurity,” Amir Abdollahian averred.

Elsewhere, Amir Abdollahian mentioned the long-standing strategic links between Iran and Lebanon and said that Tehran constantly follows events in Beirut.

He said Iran will continue to back the resistance movement in an effort to save Lebanon and the rest of the region from Israel.

Any foreign interference in Lebanon’s political issues was also condemned by the minister.

The chief diplomat emphasized that Iran has never meddled in Lebanon’s internal affairs and promised that at its request, it will “continue to strongly support the government, nation, army and resistance in Lebanon.”

He reaffirmed Tehran’s support for any deal reached by the political leaders of Lebanon on the election of the president and the establishment of a new government.

Amir Abdollahian said he had a “very promising” meeting with Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of the Hezbollah resistance movement.

The Iranian minister quoted the Hezbollah leader as saying that should the Israeli regime commit any error, the situation against the Zionists would quickly shift.

The Israeli regime, according to Amir Abdollahian, is “suffering from multifaceted and security crises inside the occupied territories.”

Also, Amir Abdollahian said that Iran has consistently backed diplomacy and talks to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the formal name for the 2015 nuclear agreement.

The foreign minister went on to say that a recent agreement between Iran and the United States on unfreezing Iran’s assets illegally frozen in foreign banks and the exchange of prisoners will have a “positive impact on indirect talks about the removal of sanctions.”

The senior diplomat reaffirmed Tehran’s political commitment to reviving the JCPOA in the event that all parties adhere to the terms of the agreement.

On Oman’s request, he said, messages are now being exchanged between Iran and the signatories to the nuclear accord.

Iran was given some sanctions relief thanks to the JCPOA and in return offered to modify parts of its nuclear program.

However, the U.S. withdrew from the accord in 2018 as part of the so-called “maximum pressure” strategy pursued by U.S. President Donald Trump against Iran, reinstating all the sanctions that the deal had eased.

Then, on pressure from Washington, the U.S. allies party to the agreement —France, Britain, and Germany — bowled to the sanctions and suspended their commerce with Tehran.

In April 2021, talks to renew the accord were underway. However, because Washington has refused to provide assurances that it won’t back out of the pact again, the negotiations have stopped.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Energy Ministry’s Spokesman for the electricity sector Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi says that the electricity sales to Pakistan will be doubled after preparing the ground adding that soon Iran will export electricity to Oman.

Speaking to ILNA, Rajabi Mashhadi said that Iran with all countries that it has land border exchange electricity and regarding electricity export to Oman, the executive work has started and it is in the stage of choosing consultation, design and calculation.

He added that Iran receives electricity from Turkmenistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan and exports to Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and the country has electricity exchange with Turkey based on the back to back agreement as Iran gets electricity from Turkey for 3.5 days and exports electricity to this country for 3.5 days. He reiterated that the amount of exports and imports is an even level and export is less than 3% of the amount of exchange and transit.

On doubling exports to Pakistan, Rajabi Mashhadi said that the amount of exports to Pakistan is the same as last year and preparations are being made to double the current amount of 40 to 45 megawatts of electricity export to Pakistan.

On synchronizing electricity network with Russia, he said that this has been done but the median network should be reinforced.

On export of electricity to Iraq, he said that export to Iraq is done based on a long term and five-year agreement and cooperation continues based on the agreement.

He said that the total amount of electricity import and export is around 5b kilowatts per hour.

On the domestic electricity consumption, he said that low electricity consumers will get bonus for saving energy, adding that there are over 31m electricity subscribers in the country.

Rajabi Mashhadi admitted there is a disequilibrium in the electricity industry, adding that there is around 11,000 megawatts of disequilibrium in electricity and all should work to bring new power stations to the grid and people’s help in saving electricity consumption will help this disequilibrium to reach its least amount.

He went on to say that repair and overhaul in the power plants has finished by 90% and it is expected all of them to be finished by the end of the current year.

He said that the government has plans to solve the issue of the old power plants and since some of the power plants are in the centers of the big cities, some new power stations should be constructed in those places and it needs to get licenses.

He said that in the first stage, renovation of 3000 megawatts of old power plants in the big cities has been put on the agenda.

Rajabi Mashhadi added that with the plans and actions taken by the related bodies, he expects no power cut in the summer but he urged the people to cooperate with efficient electricity consumption.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of Board of Directors of Iran Electrical Industry Syndicate (IEIS) says Iran is able to export electricity to Europe and India with developing its power plant and transmission networks infrastructures as well as managing domestic consumption.

Payam Baqeri said that Iran can export electricity to East Europe via Russian route, emphasizing that Iran is located in a region which can transmit electricity from north to Europe and from east to Afghanistan, Pakistan and even to India and from south to the Persian Gulf littoral states but it requires development of power plant and transmission networks infrastructures and managing the domestic consumption.

On connection of Iran’s electricity grid to the neighboring states in line with materializing programs of national energy hub, he said that exchange of electricity has become serious in the downstream programs and also in the announced policies in the resistance economy, as it bespeaks of its significance.

Baqeri noted that due to Iran’s potentials and its geographical location as well as the needs of the surrounding countries to electricity and due to Iran’s capability in the electricity industry, he can strongly say that Iran is a country that can turn into an electricity hub not only in the region but also above it.

He added that one of the series of plans which should be considered is synchronization of the national electricity network to the regional states like Russia as the feasibility studies in this regard have been conducted, and since Russia’s electricity network is sustainable and it is actually a powerful network, the connection to this network will have many advantages for both states.

Baqeri noted that Iran is linked electrically to all of countries which have land borders with it but in order to become the electricity hub of the region, it needs to take bigger steps and connection to the Russian network can be one of the steps.

He said that currently most volume of Iran’s electricity export is to Iraq and it can increase this amount of export to Iraq with developing the required infrastructures and at the same time the country can import electricity from Armenia and Turkmenistan through connecting to their networks and it can help the country to become electricity hub in the region.

He said there is possibility for exporting electricity to the Persian Gulf states via marine cables and studies are underway and these plans have been also in the past and studies have been conducted.

Baqeri said that Iran currently has some 90,000 megawatts of installed capacities and it makes the country number one in the region and it is one of the important potentials of national electricity potentials.
