TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iran does not have a common border with Europe but it is possible to exchange electricity with Europe up to 600 megawatts through an advanced back-to-back substation, Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi stated.

He revealed the possibility of exporting Iran’s electricity to Europe through Turkey in cooperation with the private sector companies active in regional electricity markets.

In this respect, an agreement has been inked between Iran’s TAVANIR and the Turkish side, based on which Iran will export electricity to Turkey and then export it to the European countries through Turkey, he stated.

With the studies conducted in this regard, there is the possibility of exchanging electricity with neighboring states up to 3,000 megawatts, expandable up to 5,000 megawatts through the launch of the new electricity transmission lines in the future, he added.

The TAVANIR chief said the electricity exchange with neighboring states could help reduce the electricity imbalance in the warm season of the year.

He also said the ground has been set for the export of up to 300 megawatts of electricity generated by the private sector through the available electricity transmission lines (50 megawatts to Afghanistan, 50 megawatts to Pakistan, 100 megawatts to Iraq and 100 megawatts to Turkey).

President Rouhani made the remark in a joint press conference with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday in Tehran.

Noting that a “new step” has been taken in the promotion of the two countries’ relations, Rouhani said Tehran and Islamabad are fully resolved to this cause, and stress that no third country will ever be able to undermine the close and amicable ties between the two sides.

Rouhani said he had conferred on border security with the Pakistani PM at a meeting prior to the press conference, saying “we both agreed to expand security cooperation between the two countries, and form a joint rapid reaction force on shared borders to counter terrorism.”

Elsewhere, the Iranian president said the country is ready to meet Pakistan’s oil and gas needs, calling on Pakistan to complete the gas pipeline project on their own end.

The US hostile and wrong measures in the region, regarding the Jerusalem al-Quds, Golan Heights, and its anti-IRGC move were also discussed with the Pakistani side, Rouhani added.

Rouhani then noted that Prime Minister Khan has extended an invitation to him for an official visit, voicing hope that the visit would take place at an appropriate time in the future.

On the sidelines of the press conference, the two sides signed an MoU on healthcare cooperation.
