First Meeting of Iran’s Economic Dialogue Council Held With New Economy Minister

TEHRAN (Iran News) The meeting, hosted at Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture, opened with condolences from Madanizadeh for the recent loss of civilians, military commanders, and nuclear scientists during the recent twelve-day conflict. He emphasized that his term at the ministry begins under the shadow of war, which has already caused significant human and economic losses.

Madanizadeh highlighted the government’s swift wartime response to protect the economy and ensure the steady supply of essential goods to the public. He praised the solidarity and coordination among government institutions, producers, business associations, and the broader private sector, noting their efforts helped ease the public’s concerns about shortages in basic necessities.

Acknowledging the broader economic damage from the conflict, Madanizadeh explained that businesses suffered reduced activity levels, leading to a decline in both supply and demand. “We observed a domino effect,” he said, warning that without proper planning, these economic disruptions could persist. He stressed the need for accurate risk perception, explaining that if people overestimate risks, it discourages investment—a critical issue in a year designated as the “Year of Investment for Production.”

To address these challenges, Madanizadeh announced new government support packages aimed at large industries, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and trade associations. He expressed hope that these measures would help mitigate the war-related damages over time.

Outlining his main agenda, the minister emphasized a strategy of reducing state involvement and promoting genuine privatization. “We must transfer not only ownership but also management to the private sector so it can truly expand,” he said. Additionally, he announced plans to revitalize state-owned assets, reform the country’s financial systems, and strengthen the role of capital markets. Currently, he noted, Iran’s production sector relies too heavily on bank financing, and there is a serious plan to boost capital market contributions.

During the meeting, Samad Hassanzadeh, President of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce and Secretary of the Dialogue Council, also paid tribute to those killed in the conflict. He commended the private sector’s “responsible and coordinated” response in managing production and distribution under wartime conditions. Hassanzadeh praised the Iranian people’s national solidarity, which he said helped prevent widespread economic hardship.

Keyvan Kashefi, Deputy Chair of the Dialogue Council, stressed the importance of implementing the council’s decisions promptly. By law, the government must address these decisions within 30 days, yet Kashefi noted this deadline is sometimes missed. He recommended that the minister include provincial dialogue council meetings in his travels to better address regional economic challenges.” Economy Minister”

The meeting reflected shared resolve between the government and private sector to stabilize Iran’s economy and pursue long-term reforms despite recent adversities. Madanizadeh concluded by reiterating his commitment to empower the private sector as the engine of economic growth.

Iran’s new Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Ehsan Khandouzi has said financing the government and ensuring economic growth are the main priorities of the ministry during his tenure, IRNA reported.

“The main responsibility of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs is to finance the government and ensure economic development using sustainable, safe, and low-risk methods,” Khandouzi said on Thursday, the first day of his work as economy minister.

Stating that Iran’s economy requires several short-term measures with good effectiveness, the official said: “Of course, these short-term measures must be considered in the long-term path toward economic reform.”

According to Khandouzi, the ministry’s short-term measures include enhancing the role of the Ministry of Economy in macroeconomic policy-making to restore stability to the country’s economy, reducing price and currency fluctuations and stabilizing the markets, and then moving rapidly toward economic growth and increasing per capita income.

Helping to rearrange the performance of the Iranian economy with the aim of neutralizing sanctions and to ensure that the Iranian economy is not so fragile and vulnerable is also on the agenda.

He further mentioned his plans for establishing relations with academics, knowledge institutes and interaction with the private sector, and said: “The Ministry of Economy will definitely succeed when it systematically uses the academic and research capacities and experiences of the country’s scholar and specialists, and therefore, we intend to communicate with economic experts and think tanks and raise issues and concerns and address the problems that are most faced by NGOs in the production and export sectors.”

Finally, Khandouzi expressed hope that with the help of the private sector and cooperative institutions, organizations and associations, the Finance and Economic Affairs Ministry will be able to reach its goals and realize its priorities.

Finally on Sunday President Hassan Rouhani officially released the names of four nominees to the parliament for the post of Labor, economy, industry, and transport ministers.

The names were released to the media after many speculations that who will fill these posts.

Vice President for Parliamentary Affairs Hossein-Ali Amiri said that Rouhani will attend the Majlis when the MPs start confirmation hearings on the nominees on October 28.

“In a letter to the parliament, Rouhani proposed to appoint Farhad Dejpasand as the minister of economy; Mohammad Eslami as minister of transport and urban development; Mohammad Shariatmadari as minister of cooperatives, labor, and social welfare; and Reza Rahmani as minister of industry, mine and trade,” MP Assadollah Abbasi told reporters on the sidelines of an open session of parliament.

Labor Minister Ali Rabiee and Economy Minister Masoud Karbasian were voted out by parliament on August 8 and 26 respectively. However, Transport Minister Abbas Akhondi reportedly resigned in protest to differences with some key allies of President Rouhani.

The unemployment rate and devaluation of national currency and price hikes were cited as the main reasons for impeaching the ministers of labor and economy.

Shariatmadari, who led the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Mine until Saturday, is being nominated for labor minister.

Shariatmadari, also trade minister in the Khatami administration, is a graduate of electrical engineering from University of Kerman.

Mohammad Eslami has studied civil engineering at University of Detroit Mercy. He has held various jobs including governor of Mazandaran province.

Dejpasand is an economics professor at Beheshti University; he has also worked as deputy head of the Planning and Budget Organization among other jobs.

Rahmani has a degree in DBA (doctor of business administration) and has served as deputy minister of industry, mine and trade.

Abbas Akhoundi released his resignation letter on Saturday. The letter dated back to September 1. He cited disagreements on urban redevelopment as the main reason behind his decision.

In the letter, Akhoundi criticized the Rouhani administration’s handling of U.S. sanctions for violating the essential rights of ownership and fair competition.

He added that he had resigned on three previous occasions and asked Rouhani to accept his resignation this time.

On Saturday as he attended the unveiling ceremony of smartification projects at Imam Khomeini Airport, Akhoundi said it was his last day as minister.
