Joint Cooperation Aimed at Boosting Iran-Japan Economic Relations

TEHRAN (Iran News) According to a statement from TCCIMA’s public relations office, the meeting focused on fostering constructive dialogue and exploring potential areas for collaboration. Mahmoud Najafi-Arab, President of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the history of positive economic and investment ties between the two countries. However, he acknowledged that due to international sanctions, Japanese companies have exercised increased caution in their dealings with Iran, resulting in a decline in economic engagement in recent years.

Najafi-Arab stressed that the current conditions are not permanent and urged Japanese companies to establish their presence in Iran’s market early on. He proposed that continuous engagement between TCCIMA and JETRO’s Tehran office could help identify mutual economic opportunities. He also expressed TCCIMA’s readiness to sign a formal cooperation agreement with JETRO, pointing to promising fields for collaboration such as pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, automotive industries, education, and startups. He further suggested initiating formal communication between TCCIMA and the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Fereydoun Verdinejad, Secretary-General of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, also voiced the Chamber’s commitment to strengthening ties with JETRO. He emphasized the need for mechanisms to facilitate information exchange between Iranian and Japanese companies and economic actors. Verdinejad added that TCCIMA could serve as a platform for transferring Japanese technical and managerial knowledge to the Iranian business community.

Nobutaka Makawa, Executive Vice President of JETRO, welcomed the proposal to sign a cooperation agreement and stressed the importance of carefully reviewing its terms. He expressed satisfaction with the Tehran Chamber’s proactive approach and affirmed JETRO’s intent to deepen its cooperation with TCCIMA as part of broader efforts to expand Japan-Iran economic interactions.

The meeting concluded on a positive and constructive note, with both sides agreeing to continue consultations aimed at identifying and pursuing joint economic opportunities.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s newly-appointed Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said on Thursday that boosting economic ties between Tehran and Baku is a high priority for Iran.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Governor-General of East Azarbaijan Province Mohammadreza Pour-Mohammadi, reported Mehr News Agency.

Mousavi said the neighboring states will have an important role to play in the future of Tehran’s political and diplomatic relations with other countries due to the cruel sanctions imposed against Iran.

Border provinces of Iran have a vital role to this end, he said, adding that East Azarbaijan is of great importance as the province enjoys the appropriate commercial, economic and industrial infrastructures.

Mousavi outlined the development of cultural, academic, and scientific relations as other priorities of Iran’s diplomacy with Azerbaijan, noting that the exchange of students and holding joint conferences can be effective in the expansion of bilateral relations.

In a telephone conversation in late June, Iran’s Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Farhad Dejpasand and Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev explored ways for the expansion of bilateral economic relations between the two countries amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Dejpasand, who is also the Iranian chairman of the joint cooperation committee of the two counties, said, “I hope that with the help of bilateral cooperation, we will be able to witness the expansion and strengthening of economic relations between Iran and Azerbaijan.”

The minister also expressed hope that through observing anti-coronavirus health protocols the two sides can hold the 14th meeting of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Committee in the near future.

He also referred to the building of a joint industrial park near the border of the two countries and joint projects of International North-South Transit Corridor, which is a 7,200-km-long multimode network of ship, rail, and road routes for moving freight between India, Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia, and Europe.

India’s Secretary of Economic Relations in the Ministry of External Affairs T. S. Tirumurti expressed New Delhi’s keenness on launching Chabahar-Zahedan, Khaf-Herat railroads as golden opportunities for trade between India, Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asian countries.

During a trilateral meeting between senior officials from Iran, India and Afghanistan, which was held in Tehran on Tuesday, Tirumurti said New Delhi is looking forward to the inauguration of the rail roads, which create a great corridor between the Central Asian states and Iran’s southeastern borders and as well as the strategic Chabahar Port.

Khaf-Herat Railroad is part of Iran-Afghanistan rail corridor. It aims to create a reliable transport corridor for the smooth transport and transit of goods and services through Chabahar Port between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Republic of India, and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Chabahar-Zahedan Railroad is another project, which is envisaged to facilitate the transport of goods from India to the landlocked countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The official pointed to the implementation of Chabahar Port, saying the port creates a good corridor between India and Central Asia, and we can turn the Chabahar into a good trade hub.

Should the sides reach consensus over the drafts of Chabahar agreement, they will finalized the deal later tonight.

Chabahar Port, which lies on the Sea of Oman, provides the closest and safest transit channel to Afghanistan as so far India has sent three cargo ships of wheat and grains to the port to be trucked to Afghanistan.

The port is easily accessible from India’s western coast and is increasingly seen as a counter to Pakistan’s Gwadar Port.

Under an agreement signed between India and Iran in May 2016, India is to equip and operate two berths in Chabahar Port Phase-I with a capital investment of $85.21 million and annual revenue expenditure of $22.95 million on a 10-year lease.
