TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said the Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to uphold its longstanding policy of maintaining “balanced” and “friendly” relations with all Eurasian and East Asian powers.

“Iran has a longstanding policy of maintaining balanced, friendly relations w/ all Eurasian & East Asian powers. Our potential longterm cooperation agreements w/ #China & #Russia, & our continued joint work w/ #India in Chabahar prove this. We are determined to uphold this policy,” Seyed Abbas Mousavi tweeted on Saturday.

Recently, the spokesman also said that Tehran attached great importance to enhanced trade ties with neighboring countries.

“The expansion of economic cooperation with neighbors has been among Iran’s main priorities,” Mousavi said on July 16.

He pointed out that Iran has 15 neighbors which can help it circumvent the sanctions and make them “ineffective”.

“Our country is currently experiencing an economy without oil (revenues). Therefore, the expansion of economic cooperation with neighbors as well as the contribution of the private sector to reduce economic pressures is important more than ever,” he added.

In April 2019, the United States said it would stop waivers for countries buying Iranian oil, in an attempt to push Iran’s oil exports to zero.

Efforts by the Trump administration to isolate Iran politically and economically began with Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers in 2018.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A newly commissioned China aircraft carrier sailed through the Taiwan Strait for a second time Thursday, Taipei’s defense ministry said, just weeks before the island goes to polls to elect a new president.

The ministry said it was fully monitoring the Shandong, China first domestically built aircraft carrier, and accompanying ships as they traversed the strait separating China from self-ruled Taiwan.

Taiwan’s presidential office said in a statement that China had an “international responsibility” to contribute to cross-strait and regional peace and welfare, AFP reported.

Last month Beijing confirmed it had sent the new carrier through the strait as part of routine training, sparking concerns from Washington’s de facto embassy in Taiwan.

At the time, foreign minister Joseph Wu accused China of attempting to intervene in Taiwan’s elections, saying “voters won’t be intimidated.”

The sail-bys come ahead of Taiwan’s January 11 presidential elections, with Beijing-skeptic President Tsai Ing-wen seeking a second term against a challenger who favors warmer ties with China.

Beijing has stepped up military and diplomatic pressure on Taiwan since Tsai came to power in 2016, as her government refuses to acknowledge that the democratic island is part of “one China.”

Tsai — who has voiced support for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement — has described the elections as a fight for Taiwan’s freedom and democracy.

China still sees Taiwan as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.

Beijing announced earlier this month that the Shandong had officially entered service.

It’s only other carrier — the Liaoning — has passed through the Taiwan Strait several times in recent years, most recently in June.

US navy ships periodically conduct “freedom of navigation” operations in the Taiwan Strait, while Canadian and French ships have also sailed through the waterway this year.

China views any ships passing through the strait as a breach of its territorial sovereignty — while the US and many other nations see the route as international space.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – China hosted the leaders of squabbling neighbors South Korea and Japan for their first official meeting in over a year on Tuesday, flexing its diplomatic muscle with America’s two key Asian allies and seeking unity on how to deal with North Korea.

Free trade and economic cooperation were also at the forefront of the meetings between Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu, AP reported.

Li said the three agreed that “dialogue and consultation is the only effective way to solve the issues of the Korea Peninsula.”

“We three countries are willing to work together with the international community to solve the issue of the Korea Peninsula in a political way,” Li said at a joint news conference following the meeting.

The gathering in the southwestern city of Chengdu was held with the clock ticking on a threatened “Christmas gift” from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that could reignite global tensions over its nuclear program, AFP reported.

Kim has promised the unidentified “gift” – which analysts and American officials believe could be a provocative missile test – if the US does not make concessions in their nuclear talks by the end of the year.

After the meeting with China, both Japan and South Korea urged the resumption of talks between Pyongyang and Washington.

The US-North Korea diplomacy has largely remained deadlocked since the second summit between President Donald Trump and Kim in Vietnam in February due to disputes over how much sanctions relief the North must get in return for dismantling its key nuclear complex — a limited disarmament step.

The leaders of the three countries also promised to help promote dialogue to rid the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons.

No threat to Japan

North Korean state media slammed Tokyo, saying its weapons tests “pose no threat” to Japan, AFP reported.

Still, if the North fired an intercontinental ballistic missile in defiance of UN sanctions, it would destroy Trump’s argument that he had succeeded in reducing risks from North Korea.

At the joint news conference, Abe criticized North Korean missile launches as violating UN resolutions and seriously threatening regional security, AP reported.

“For that purpose, it was confirmed that full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions remains important, and we need to maintain the momentum of the US-North Korea process,” Abe said.

First bilateral meeting

The gathering also featured the first bilateral meeting between South Korea’s Moon and Japanese prime minister in 15 months.

Ties between the two have hit rock bottom lately over trade issues and other disputes related to decades of bitter wrangling over Japan’s 1910-1945 occupation of the Korean Peninsula.

The United States has urged the pair to bury the hatchet – worried their poor relations were complicating diplomacy in Asia – although it has held off on direct mediation.

China is appearing to fill that void with the Chengdu event.

“As the region’s major power, China hopes to show its diplomatic presence to the world by bringing the Japanese and South Korean leaders to the same table,” Haruko Satoh, professor and expert on Chinese politics at Osaka University, told AFP.

Free trade

Li, Abe, and Moon also said they discussed furthering regional cooperation on the economy, the environment and people-to-people exchanges.

“We all advocate for free trade and promote economic integration. China holds that safeguarding free trade benefits the protection of multilateralism, of world peace,” AP quoted as Li saying.

The trilateral summits between China, Japan, and South Korea date back to the fallout from the 1997 Asian financial crisis, which devastated businesses across the region and prompted moves toward greater economic integration. The three countries account for about 24% of world trade and have tightly bound supply chains, with more than $720 billion in trade moving between them last year.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday, Mahmoud Vaezi said Rouhani is scheduled to visit Malaysia and Japan later this month.

The presidential visit to Kuala Lumpur will be made at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad, he added.

Vaezi also noted that Rouhani has decided to pay a visit to Japan at the invitation of Japanese leader Shinzo Abe after the trip to Malaysia.

The Iranian president and the Malaysian premier held a meeting on the sidelines of the 18th Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Baku in October.

In that meeting, Rouhani called for “new mechanisms for the development of mutual cooperation” with Malaysia.

Abe visited Tehran in June to become the first Japanese leader to travel to Iran in more than 4 decades.

The Japanese prime minister met with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and the Iranian president.

Earlier, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani voiced the country’s willingness to promote bilateral relations with Malaysia and said closer economic cooperation between the Islamic Republic and the Southeast Asian country would be in favor of both nations.
