Smuggling Bands Dismantled in Tehran in 6 years

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The anti-narcotics police of Tehran Province have dismantled 400 smuggling bands and seized over 100 tons of different illicit drugs in the past six years.

Former Anti-narcotics Police Chief of Tehran province Colonel Mohammad Bakhshandeh said on Wednesday that 400 drug smuggling bands have been dismantled during the last six years in Tehran.

Over 100 tons of illegal drugs were also seized by anti-narcotics polices of Tehran Province in various operations at the same time, he added.

According to Bakhshandeh, one trafficking band was dismantled in the last 10 month and 750 Kg of narcotics were seized in Shahr-e-Rey.

374,000 culprits have been arrested in the last 6 years, he said, adding that 69,000 smugglers were identified and apprehended in the last 10 months.

The Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug trades originating from Afghanistan in the past four decades, despite its high economic and human costs. The country has spent more than hundreds of millions of dollars on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

According to reports, in 2018 alone, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Major Drug Ring Smashed, Seized 500kg of Opium

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Border guards in the southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan have managed to smash a major drug ring, capturing 500 kilograms of opium, the commander of the province’s border police announced on Sunday.

Following intelligence activities, the forces of the Mirjaveh Border Regiment were informed of the intention of a major drug gang to smuggle a heavy cargo by car to the city, Brigadier General Mohammad Mollashahi said.

The border guards immediately identified the members of the drug trafficking gang and ambushed them, he stated.

During the operation, the border guards arrested two smugglers and seized two vehicles, 500kg of opium, and a large amount of ammunition, the commander went on to say.

Police and security forces have been quite successful in ensuring security in the province despite its long borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, harsh weather and vast desert areas.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for the traffics of major Afghan drug ring to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past decades.

The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades.

Police seize 189kg of drugs in Yazd

The commander of Yazd province’s anti-narcotics police Colonol Ali Afkhami said on Saturday that the police forces identified and seized 189 kilograms of illicit drugs during an operation in Yazd which was destined to Tehran.

189kg opium was confiscated and one smuggle was arrested and has been handed over to the judicial officials, he added.

Over 10 tons of illicit drugs have been identified and confiscated by Iranian anti-narcotics police in Yazd province since the start of the year 1398 (March 21, 2019).

Located near Afghanistan which is one of the main sources of opium production in the world, Iran is on the frontline of the fight against drug trafficking. Iran has lost many forces during this fight. Tehran has always asked for international help in such operations, noting that the other countries, especially European states, should take responsibility and play a positive role in this fight or face its threats themselves. The country has spent more than hundreds of millions of dollars on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.
