TEHRAN (Iran News) – Over 300 websites offering smuggled goods shut down. More than 300 websites that used to sell smuggled goods have been so far identified and shut down, IRINN reported on Monday.

According to the report, the volume of smuggled home appliances has decreased from $2.247 billion in the Iranian calendar year 1397 (March 2018-March 2019) to $897 million in the current year.

Over the past week, smuggled goods and currency worth 2,733 billion rials (nearly $65 million at the official rate of 42,000 rials) have been discovered in the country, police official Mohammadreza Moqimi announced on Saturday.

A total of 12.431 million items of smuggled goods along with 1.256 million liters of smuggled fuel and 783 smuggled cars were seized during the mentioned period, he added, IRNA reported.

In this regard, 1,310 culprits have been arrested and handed over to the judicial authorities, he noted.

Every year, $20-25 billion are smuggled in and out of the country, which, if stopped, will create hundreds of thousands of jobs, Hassan Norouzi, a member of the parliament, said.

In the Iranian calendar year 1396 (March 2017-March 2018), $12 billion was smuggled into Iran and $900 million out of the country, according to the Headquarters for Combating the Smuggling of Commodities and Foreign Exchange.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, Iran has been actively fighting drug trafficking over the past decades.

In June 2020, the first phase of the national anti-smuggling plan was implemented with the priority given to customs, tobacco, and transit goods.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – National anti-drug week to highlight international cooperation. The national anti-drug week will be held on June 25-31 concurrent with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking focusing on regional and international cooperation.

In 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

This year, the day is observed with a theme of “Together, we can tackle the world drug problem!”, aiming to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.

Iran also marks the day during a week, each day of the week has assigned a special theme this year as follows:

Friday, June 25: the role of religious principles and spirituality in drug use prevention
Saturday, June 26: cross-sectoral and international cooperation
Sunday, June 27: family and educational environments
Monday, June 28: new therapies and social support
Tuesday, June 29: anti-drug diplomacy
Wednesday, June 30: social participation
Thursday, June 31: effective insurance, more access to mental health services

Drug trafficking fight requires common understanding

Iranian deputy anti-narcotics police chief Naghi Mahmoudi has stressed that the drug trafficking fight requires a common understanding and action by all members of the international community, and no country alone can address the challenges in this area.

Stressed the importance of improving the level of regional and international cooperation, he said that conducting joint operations, simultaneously and based on the rapid exchange of information is of great importance.
Despite the conditions caused by the coronavirus outbreak and the imposition of harsh sanctions against the country, fortunately, with the efforts of anti-narcotics police in 2020, drug detection increased by 41 percent.

Battle against narcotics continues despite sanctions, pandemic

Iran has carried on a battle against narcotics in spite of being highly affected by cruel sanctions and COVID-19 pandemic, Eskandar Momeni, the director of headquarters for the fight against narcotics, said on April 13.
Over the past three years, the counter-narcotics agencies and police forces succeeded in detecting about 2,917 tons of various types of narcotics.

After the Islamic Revolution (in 1979), 3,800 were martyred, 12,000 were wounded and disabled in the fight against drug trafficking.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has praised Iran’s efforts to fight against narcotics trafficking on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The organization also officially announced that the world’s first place in the discovery of opium, heroin, and morphine belongs to Iran.

According to UNODC, Iran remains one of the major transit routes for drug trafficking from Afghanistan to European countries and has had a leading role at the global level in drug-control campaigns.

UNODC World Drug Report 2020 estimates that in 2018, 91 percent of world opium, 48 percent of the world morphine, and 26 percent of the world heroin were seized by Iran.

He made the remarks in a video conference on the production and trafficking of methamphetamine in Afghanistan and its market in the world held by the Interpol police on Sunday, IRNA reported.

Stressed the importance of improving the level of regional and international cooperation, he said that conducting joint operations, simultaneously and based on the rapid exchange of information is of great importance.

Last year (March 2020 – March 2021), amid the pandemic, Iran has participated in more than 20 regional and international events online, in cooperation with the UNODC office in Tehran, he highlighted, IRNA reported on Tuesday.

The counter-narcotics agencies and police forces succeeded in detecting about 1,150 tons of various types of narcotics by strengthening the mechanisms for monitoring and exchanging information between the responsible organizations.

This volume of discoveries is a new and unprecedented record in the fight against drugs, which shows a growth of about 41 percent compared to 2019; some 90 percent of the substances found were opium, 26 percent heroin, and 48 percent morphine.

This success has been achieved with the martyrdom of 10 law enforcement and counter-narcotics forces in the global front against drug transit.

According to the commander, the forces seized the smugglers’ vehicle at the entrance to Bandar Abbas and discovered 18 packs of narcotics which were hidden in the wall of an industrial water heater.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of Seasonal Conference of Secretaries of Iran Drug Control Headquarters in Tehran on Saturday.

The Iranian administration has made efforts against decreasing the budget of the Drug Control Headquarters, Vaezi said, adding that fortunately the drug trafficking has been identified as an essential issue in Iran.

Iran has done very well in the fight against drug smugglers, he mentioned.

Vaezi stressed that Iran cannot solely coordinate with the countries of the region in order to fight against drug-trafficking and needs international assistance.

Located near Afghanistan which is one of the main sources of opium production in the world, Iran is on the frontline of the fight against drug trafficking. Iran has lost many forces during this fight. The country has always asked for international help in such operations, noting that the other countries, especially European states, should take responsibility and play a positive role in this fight or face its threats themselves.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past four decades. The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries. The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades.

According to reports, in 2018 alone, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

According to the latest World Drug Report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in 2017, Iran had seized the largest quantity of opiates, accounting for 39% of the global total.

The commander of Yazd province’s anti-narcotics police Colonol Ali Afkhami said on Sunday that the police forces identified and seized 203 kg of illicit drugs in three operations in Yazd which was destined to Tehran.

123kg opium and 80kg of hashish were confiscated and three smugglers were arrested and has been handed over to the judicial officials, he added.

Over 10 tons of illegal drugs have been confiscated by the law-enforcement forces in Yazd province since the start of the year 1398 (March 21, 2019).

Yazd roads have an important role in connecting the southern and eastern provinces of Iran with the center of the country and it is being exploited to transport narcotics and drugs due to its location.

Located near Afghanistan which is one of the main sources of opium production in the world, Iran is on the frontline of the fight against drug trafficking. Iran has lost many forces during this fight. Tehran has always asked for international help in such operations, noting that the other countries, especially European states, should take responsibility and play a positive role in this fight or face its threats themselves. The country has spent more than hundreds of millions of dollars on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.
