Iran: 1 ton morphine seized in Shahriar

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The police forces of Shahriar County have seized 1-ton morphine during an operation in the city, according to an official.

Hamid Asgraipour, the Prosecutor General of Shahriar made the announcement on Tuesday, saying that the police forces arrested 3 smugglers in this regard that that were destined to transfer illicit drugs to Tehran.

The big haul of morphine has been confiscated in a truck, he added.

The Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug trades originating from Afghanistan in the past four decades, despite its high economic and human costs. The country has spent more than hundreds of millions of dollars on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

According to reports, in 2018 alone, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Iran, China to Boost Anti-Narcotics Cooperation

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior anti-narcotics official from Iran has traveled to China to explore ways of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the war on illicit drugs.

Secretary-General of Iran Anti-Narcotics Headquarters Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni arrived in China on Monday at the invitation of the Chinese Minister of Public Security.

Speaking to reporters, the Iranian general said he sought to promote cooperation between Iran and China in various fields of anti-narcotics efforts.

“The two countries share views on the war on narcotics, and such common views have prepared the ground for close cooperation,” Momeni said, adding that he would discuss various plans with the Chinese officials to share experiences in the war on illicit drugs.

During a visit to China, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani signed a memorandum of understanding on the fight against narcotics, the general said, noting that he will be pursuing efforts to implement the agreement.

“In this visit, we will strengthen cooperation between the two countries in various fields of the war on drugs, such as countering, treatment, mitigating damages, and prevention at the level of regional and international diplomacy,” Momeni stated.

In November 2019, Iran’s minister of interior and China’s ambassador to Tehran discussed plans for cooperation between the police forces of the two countries and the fight against terrorism and narcotics.

Momeni had announced in June 2019 that despite the US sanctions’ negative impact on Iran’s campaign on illicit drugs, the country captures 800 tons of narcotics each year.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past decades.

Total Illicit Drugs Seized in 4 Decades: 12000 Tons

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Secretary-General of Iran’s Drug Control Headquarters Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni announced that a total of 12,000 tons of illicit drugs and narcotics have been discovered and seized in the country in the past 40 years, a major portion of which is destined for Europe.

“3,300km of different physical and electronic barriers have been created and 50,000 gangs and groups in which distributed drugs were annihilated. Some 100,000 vehicles (carrying drugs) have been seized and 12,000 tons of narcotics discovered and seized in the past 40 years (after the Islamic Revolution in Iran),” General Momeni said on Monday.

He added that 3,800 security and police forces have been martyred in the past 40 years while fighting against drug traffickers.

Iran is in the forefront of the fight against drug trafficking and thousands of Iranian police forces have been so far martyred to protect the world from the danger of drugs.

The Iranian anti-narcotics police have always staged periodic operations against drug traffickers and dealers, but reports – which among others indicate an improved and systematic dissemination of information – reveal that the world’s most forefront and dedicated anti-narcotic force (as UN drug-campaign assessments put it) has embarked on a long-term countrywide plan to crack down on the drug trade since more than a decade ago.

In relevant remarks in May, Iranian Police Chief Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari had described Iran as a pioneering state in campaign against drug trafficking, and said, “We have declared our information and needs to the international organizations and I should say that we have not pinned hope on their aid.”

“We do not have hope that the international organizations can seriously confront” the cultivation and production of narcotics in Afghanistan, General Ashtari said.

The Iranian police officials maintain that drug production in Afghanistan has undergone a 50-fold increase since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

Afghan and western officials blame Washington and NATO for the change, saying that allies have “overlooked” the drug problem since invading the country 18 years ago.

Major Drug Ring Smashed, Seized 500kg of Opium

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Border guards in the southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan have managed to smash a major drug ring, capturing 500 kilograms of opium, the commander of the province’s border police announced on Sunday.

Following intelligence activities, the forces of the Mirjaveh Border Regiment were informed of the intention of a major drug gang to smuggle a heavy cargo by car to the city, Brigadier General Mohammad Mollashahi said.

The border guards immediately identified the members of the drug trafficking gang and ambushed them, he stated.

During the operation, the border guards arrested two smugglers and seized two vehicles, 500kg of opium, and a large amount of ammunition, the commander went on to say.

Police and security forces have been quite successful in ensuring security in the province despite its long borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, harsh weather and vast desert areas.

Iran Captured 550 Tons of Illicit Drugs

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Secretary-General of Iran’s Anti-Narcotics Headquarters Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni said the country has managed to capture 550 tons of illicit drugs during the first seven months of the current Persian calendar year (March 2019 – March 2020).

Speaking to reporters in the southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan, Momeni highlighted the Islamic Republic’s successful campaign on narcotics and said in the first seven months of the current Iranian year more than 550 tons of various kinds of illicit drugs have been seized.

The official further said that 154 tons of the seizures have been reported in Sistan and Balouchestan Province.

The capture of illicit drugs has increased by 16 percent compared to the same period last year, he said, adding that the seizures in the southeastern province have witnessed a 25% year-on-year increase.

Police and security forces have been quite successful in ensuring security in the Sistan and Balouchestan despite its long borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, harsh weather and vast desert areas.
