Chaired by President Ebrahim Raisi, the mentioned meeting also dealt with various issues regarding the regulation of the basic goods market.

During the meeting, a report on the situation of the major foodstuff market was presented, which was approved by President Raisi.

Raisi further asked Agriculture Minister Seyyed Javad Sadati-Nejad to take the necessary measures for managing the price of foodstuff items.

The attendees also approved the government’s proposed package that is aimed at removing obstacles and supporting the production and service sectors after several review sessions and it was decided to review it immediately in a cabinet meeting to be notified to the executive bodies for implementation after finalizing.

This package includes removing barriers to production, supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), and providing financial facilities to manufacturing and service enterprises.

Supporting domestic production has become a major goal of the Iranian government over the past two years as the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Seyed Ali Khamenei has repeatedly stressed the need for promoting domestic production and cutting reliance on foreign sources.

Earlier in January, the Iranian parliament (Majlis) had also approved the general outlines of a bill on supporting the country’s factories and production units.

The mentioned bill was approved after the parliament’s Industries and Mining Committee presented a report on the mentioned bill to the parliament.

This goal has been pursued in various sectors including agriculture, industry, mining, petrochemicals, and oil industry.

The industry and mining sectors, as major pillars of the Iranian economy, have been especially the focus for the said programs and to this due, last year a comprehensive program was defined in the Industry, Mining, and Trade Ministry for promoting domestic production and supporting production units in these fields.

The industry ministry’s programs in the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 21) which has been named the year of “Production: Support and Elimination of Obstacles.” by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Seyed Ali Khamenei, include reviving idle units and providing bank facilities for the country’s production units and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Management of imports and development of non-oil exports, development of mines and mining industries, development of technology and knowledge-based products, market management and organization of commercial logistics, improving the business environment and ultimately providing financial resources to the producers, and investment development have also been among the ministry’s major programs this year.

Following the mentioned programs, the production of 20 major mining and industrial products has increased in the first four months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-July 22), compared to the same period of time in the past year, according to the Industry, Mining and Trade Ministry data.

The mentioned products include all kinds of home appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.), passenger and heavy vehicles, and mining industry products including steel, copper, aluminum, cement, ceramic tiles, etc.

Based on the ministry data, washing machines, edible vegetable oil, combines and aluminum ingots were the top produced items in the said four months.

In the said time span, domestic manufacturers of home appliances managed to produce 1.47 million sets of various products to register 17.2 percent rise compared to the previous year’s same period.

The manufacturers produced 430,000 units of washing machines in the mentioned four months, registering a 36.2 percent increase compared to the previous year’s same period.

The production of freezers and refrigerators also increased 20.4 percent to reach 692,000 units.

The production of various types of vehicles also increased significantly in the mentioned time span. During this period, more than 292,500 units of passenger cars, 22,415 trucks, 538 buses, minibusses, and vans, 216 combine harvesters, and 5,937 tractors have been manufactured in the country.

Production of petrochemical products also registered a 3.8 percent increase in the mentioned four months to reach 21 million tons.

Also, more than 9.6 million tons of crude steel was produced in the period under review, which indicates a growth of 1.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

The production of copper cathode, chinaware and glass products were 100,000 tons, 19,600 tons, and 442,400 tons, respectively, which shows a growth of 5.3 percent in the production of copper cathode, an increase of nearly 31 percent in chinaware products, and a growth of 30 percent for glass products compared to the same period in the previous year.

The production of various types of vehicles also increased significantly in the mentioned time span, so that the production of passenger cars registered an 8.8-percent rise compared to the previous year’s same two months, reaching 127,700.

During this period, automakers produced 9,477 trucks, which indicates a growth of 12.9 percent.

Also, the production of car tires in the first two months of this year grew by 1.3 percent compared to the previous year and reached 40,200 tons.

According to the Industry Ministry data, some 4.9 million square feet of leather was produced in the mentioned period to register a growth of 27.3 percent.

Also, more than 5.222 million tons of crude steel was produced in the period under review, which indicates a growth of 13.9 percent compared to the same two months last year.

Manufacturing of steel products increased by 4.5 percent as well during this period, to reach 4,300,100 tons.

Referring to the need to support production and improve the employment of youth in the year which has been named the year of “Production: Support and Elimination of Obstacles” by the Leader of the Islamic revolution Seyed Ali Khamenei, Omid Hajati said the priority for the allocation of the mentioned resources would be for development projects and export-oriented production units.

The Iranian targeted subsidy plan, also known as the subsidy reform plan, was passed by the Iranian parliament on January 5, 2010.

The government has described the subsidy plan as the “biggest surgery” to the nation’s economy in half a century and “one of the most important undertakings in Iran’s recent economic history”.

The goal of the subsidy reform plan is to replace subsidies on food and energy (80 percent of total) with targeted social assistance, in accordance with the country’s Five-Year National Development Plan.

According to the government, approximately $100 billion per year is spent on subsidizing energy prices ($45 billion for the prices of fuel alone) and many consumable goods including bread, sugar, rice, edible oils, and medicine.

Since the U.S. re-imposed sanctions on Iran to pressure the country’s economy, Iran has been taking all necessary measures to mitigate the impact of the sanctions and counter the U.S. actions.

In a televised speech at the beginning of the new year on March 20, Ayatollah Khamenei praised the Iranian nation’s victory in confronting the enemy’s maximum pressures, and chose “production: support and the elimination of obstacles” as the slogan for the year 1,400 (March 2021-March 2022) .

The president said in the Sunday meeting that what matters the most in the current conditions is to strengthen production and improve the atmosphere for businesses, which he said require cooperation and synergy among all Iranian sectors and branches of power.

The elimination of obstacles and supporting domestic production requires tangible and practical actions, not mere words, the president added.

He also emphasized that arrangements for a rise in production should be made rapidly by avoiding bureaucratic complexities.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Iran Daily, Gholamreza Dizaji, added Iran is definitely capable of increasing its share of the international toy market in light of its enormous capacity in the production of petrochemicals, which constitute the major part of the raw materials required by the industry.

“We have a young workforce in this field who has excellent ideas and can contribute significantly to improving the status of this industry [nationally and internationally]. This is because diversity and design are the main elements of this industry. In addition, our neighboring states would welcome our toys enthusiastically given our cultural proximity to them.”

He put at $300 billion the toy industry’s global turnover in 2019, adding China had the biggest share of this market by generating $60 billion in revenues, followed by India, the US, Japan, and Indonesia.

Dizaji said in 2019, the industry’s exports fetched India and the US $36 billion and $32 billion respectively.

He predicted that by 2023, the country’s income through toy exports would witness a 4.5-percent growth.

Describing as meager Iran’s present share of the international toy market, Dizaji said the country’s annual toy imports stand at $150 million.

He added domestic products meet close to $15 billion of the country’s total need for toys.

The association’s chief put Iran’s annual toy exports at $4 million, saying neighboring states, particularly Iraq, are among the customers of Iranian toys.

Turning to the cultural importance of toy exports, he noted that any product exported from one country to another carries a cultural message with itself, let alone toys that are directly associated with the educational and cultural issues pertaining to children.

Dizaji said the domestic toy industry’s organized and concentrated development began following the establishment of Iran Toy Association in the year to March 2019.

He blamed unrestrained imports as the main factor slowing the domestic toy industry’s development over the past years.

“Iran’s low per capita toy consumption is the main problem of the domestic toy industry. It amounts to, at most, $10 dollar per annum in Iran; while the global average amounts to $33 per year. The figure is more than $400 annually in countries such as Australia and Britain.”

Dizaji said the number of major toy producers in Iran is close to 250 units, of which 126 have become members of the Iran Toy Association.

Speaking in a meeting of the ministry’s council of deputies on Saturday, Rahmani said the mentioned desks are focused on automotive, petrochemicals, mining, electricity, electronics and telecommunications industries.

The official also noted that preparations have been made for holding seven more desks for promoting domestic production in the fields of electricity, electronics, and telecommunications, petrochemicals, home appliances, utilities, rail and auto industries which will make the country savings another €490 million.

Speaking in a ceremony on indigenizing production of telecommunications equipment, the minister said that of the mentioned $10 billion, some $500 million is predicted to be earned through domestic production of telecommunications equipment, and $400 million via indigenizing production of car parts, of which $300 million has been already achieved.

“Today, all available potentials and capacities in the country are being used to materialize the target of domestic production and the Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade will spare no effort in this due”, Rahmani further emphasized.

He said the country aims to produce electrical, automobile and telecommunications goods and double exports to 15 neighboring countries in order to reach a target value of $48 billion.

Back in October, Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said government officials should ban the import of goods that are also produced domestically.

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade, 8,055,100 tons of crude steel were produced in the first four months of the current year (March 21 – July 21), showing a 7.1 percent growth as compared to the last year’s corresponding period.

It is predicted that steel production capacity of the country will hit about 40 million tons by the yearend (March 20, 2020).
